Last punch from Pintor was brutal. Seeing Owen distressed on the canvas is the one thing that really makes me question the sport
I've always believed great sports have consequences, I see it every year here, a woman leaves here a widow, I question my own involvement sometimes, especially as I'm one of the ones building these powerful engines for some of these fellas.

Owen's family, far from blaming the World Champion, telegraphed him shortly after their loss and encouraged him to go on fighting. Twenty years later, a memorial to Johnny Owen was unveiled in Merthyr Tydfil. At the request of the late fighter's father, the unveiling was performed by Lupe Pintor; the statue was sculpted by James Done.

there was a good article in i think the ring years back about as mentioned pintor meeting up with owens family, and being there in wales for the unveling of a statue of owen. pintor was just a guy doing his job, and im sure he never expected to kill him, he was very upset about it

I think a lot of fighters feel that way when involved with a death of an opponent, which is why I find the film Cinderella Man awful because it portrays Max Baer as somebody who revelled being a killer in the ring when in fact it was the opposite, he was heartbroken at Frankie Campbells death. But for the sake of Hollywood, let's crap on a mans memory.

that was absolutely horrible and devalues the whole movie to unwatchable for me, to portray a man, a legend in his own right, of whom you barely can find a picture where he`s not smiling & joking, who raised money for campbell"s family and was haunted his whole life by that unfortunate fight, as a sort of deranged killer who beats people to death for fun and promises braddock"s wife to make her a widow is just disgusting. ron howard (shame on him) IS an arsehole of gigantic proportions.

they showed it on the beeb about 15 years ago IIRC, I thought both Owens' family and Pintor handled it well; Pintor came across very quietly dignified and humane, somehow it seemed in keeping with his stoic demeanour in the ring.

Dirrells Uncle has had his license re-instated. I kid you not.

Should be kicked out of the sport.

Pretty sure I remember Lou Duva getting stretchered out the ring after the Golota riot.

Does anyone remember Derek Wormald? His trainer collapsed walking into the ring and died (heart attack), that was a bit weird, happened on the BBC.

lol Duva lost the plot completely at the referee that night and I think I read he had a heart attack. He was stretchered out. He really loved Golota. The HBO commentary that night was pretty funny. It's such a huge gulf in quality between the American commentary and the Brit commentary.

I left youtube on running in the background yesterday and it autoplayed a couple of compilations, Lou Duva popped up on a few, he always seemed to be losing his mind at ringside. Very excitable.

When Mike Tyson came to the UK about 10 years ago, he made a deliberate effort to visit Merthyr to put some flowers down on Owen’s statue. Always thought that was a nice gesture.

There has been a few occasions for me when I question liking or watching boxing again

For me the Owen tragedy was a terrible time for boxing and his family.

I remember the Mark Goult fight and the Steve Watt

But the biggest was the Watson fight for me it really did put the question when I saw fighters in trouble thinking the should be stopped straight away

You also have to understand how the other boxer feels after a tragic event

Paul Burke for instance killed Felix Bwala and I heard he was never the same again in person and had it on his mind a lot

Obviously there has been others like Paul Ingle and Carl Wright who you have to wonder and hope they are getting the support they need
