Sons who eclipsed their fathers ring achievements?

Post by Stuarty »

Opposite of other thread. This one is probably more difficult but I'm sure there's plenty outthere although I can't think of many from the top of my head.

Mayweather is the only one that jumps out.....

A lot of fighters had fathers who boxed, it's just the fathers never get publicity

I’m no way near as knowledgeable as most on here, not having looked it up, wasn’t Buster Douglas’ dad a pro? Not sure about his résumé

Roy Jones Sr. claimed, or more accurately didn't dispute the claims, that he was the guy who fought Marvin Hagler. I'm not 100% sure whether he had a pro fight or not.

All I've heard is that was a different Roy Jones and that RJJ's father was a club fighter.

If Jesse Hart can win a world title then he would.. His father/trainer lost to Hagler I believe.

I've not been able to track his record, he said he fought in Mexico but no sign of a Roy Jones from era fighting there. Maybe he was on the chitlin' and gravy circuit?

He fought at the Philly Spectrum a fair few times and fought the likes of Briscoe, Monroe and then later Galindez, MSM, Johnson etc.

I don't know how I know this but I came across an article where he was mentioned. Probably a Russell J Peltz one.

Anyway, here's his record:

http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/16634

Here's the article, he was pretty good, records can be deceiving. He dropped MSM and was unlucky to get stopped.

Johnny Sullivan (Preston). British Middles champ 1950s. Father was Battling Sullivan.

Vernon Sollas.

Frank Grant (father was Hugh Mackie, a good fighter but not as good as Frank)

Jack Petersen (father also called Jack, he boxed pre World War 1)

Here's a good one for you Stuarty. To complete the two threads - Fighter who equalled his father's achievements - Wally Swift.

Harry Duiven jr’s Pro career certainly eclipsed his father’s...

But not as much as Felix Trinidad did.

John McDermott Had A better career than his father Stan. Although Stan KO’d Terry O’Connor in 5 rounds, Terry got his own back when he Ref The Fury Vs McDermott fight...

After watching that fight I really thought he had found his level, even after the rematch I didn't see much improvement.
I dunno whether it was because Peter took over the reins but he improved immeasurably

I imagine his 'diet' may have improved considerably?

I remember Jose Luis Lopez' dad being mentioned as a former pro. This was before the days of Boxrec but I can see his (Sr) record, he's got a couple of good names on there but I think it's fair to say Jr didn't get his chin from his dad.

I didn't know Peter Harrison was a pro fighter. Well respected trainer.

I remember reading about that on here! Bitter old trout! Thankfully he's retiring this year apparently!
