PBC, FOX FINALIZE MULTI-YEAR DEAL; NETWORK WILL PROVIDE LARGE BUDGET

"PBC, FOX FINALIZE MULTI-YEAR DEAL; NETWORK WILL PROVIDE LARGE BUDGET

When Al Haymon formed Premier Boxing Champions in early 2015, his vision was simple: buy television time on major networks, and in a few years, flip the model and receive license fees in return.

As PBC’s deal with ESPN and NBC expired, with nothing to show for it, it appeared Haymon’s ambitious plan abjectly failed. Not so fast.

Haymon maintained a relationship with Fox, a network he made time-buys with, and his strategy worked.

PBC and Fox have finalized a long-term deal for fights to appear on both Fox and FS1 with an annual boxing budget that eclipses $50 million, multiple sources told The Ring. The deal, which will be announced Tuesday, will kick off in December; the agreement calls for 10 championship-level fights on Fox, with at least another 12 shows on FS1. That’s to be added to Showtime’s existing budget, estimated at over $50 million.

Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn, who runs U.K.-based promotional company Matchroom and recently announced a wide-sweeping deal with online streaming service DAZN, is estimated to have an annual budget of $125 million.

“Between Showtime and Fox, PBC will have a bigger pool of budget money than any other promoter in boxing, including Eddie Hearn with DAZN,” an industry source who was not authorized to speak publicly told The Ring.

It was only last week that Showtime announced a new three-year deal with PBC, Haymon’s stable of fighters which totals over 160. It’s not just the biggest group of fighters in the sport, but the best, with two boxers on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list and at least 20 at the elite level of the sport.

Showtime announced plans for expanded coverage in 2019 and beyond, including monthly shows. A major criticism of PBC has long been the inactivity of some its best fighters, but that should no longer be an issue.

Between Showtime and Fox, there figures to be around 20 top-flight telecasts involving A-level fighters. A trickier problem will be how each network shares the best talent.

“As much as we would like to, we know there is a limit to what we can do here,” President of Sports and Event Programming for Showtime Steven Espinoza told The Ring last week. “There’s a limit at every network at every platform. It does take a collection of networks and platforms for the sport to be healthy.”

It’s likely Showtime will retain rights to certain weight classes they’ve invested heavily in, like welterweight, with other divisions heading over to Fox. Haymon’s roster is deepest at featherweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and light heavyweight, but there are budding stars at other weights, too.

Heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder is signed to PBC; Jermall Charlo is a middleweight; Mikey Garcia, perhaps his best fighter, competes at lightweight for the time being.

It’s an arms race in boxing with Hearn boasting over $100 million in budget money per year from the fledging streaming service DAZN, which begins later this month.

Top Rank revised its agreement with ESPN last month, and the deal now runs for seven years and calls for 54 live events per year.

HBO is still in the mix — at least for now — and boasts the biggest stars in the sport in Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

But it’s Haymon and PBC who once again lead the way.

Good s**t! The more the merrier. Just hope we get to see it in uk as this dazn app it seems has caused a bit of beef, so since July weve been starved of fights we’d normally be able to watch within our tv subscriptions.!!!

Hopefully this will shore up one of PBC's weak links, which has been sub-standard shows on Fox and Fox Sports 1 (FS1). When you started a thread last week about Showtime extending their contract with PBC I mentioned that PBC was inconsistent in the quality of their fight cards. The 2 fight cards I used as examples of PBC's downside were a show headlined by washed-up Alexander-Berto on Fox and one on FS1 headlined by Jamal James and a scrub named Mahonri Montes.

If this new deal between PBC and Fox eliminates stinkfests like those 2 "main events" then it's something to get excited about!!

Thanks for the good news... :TU:

To be fair, I personally doubt that Fox previously paid for the PBC events that they televised, as I'm supremely confident that it was a time-buy agreement, hence the reason why Haymon’s biggest stars always fought on Showtime (as Stephen Espinoza is willing to pay for the right to cover fights).

Now that Fox are actually paying for fights, rather than charging Al Haymon a fee to televise them, I expect to see a dramatic improvement in the quality of the PBC events that they cover.

The RING alleges that the PBC will “have a bigger pool of budget money than any other promoter in boxing, including Eddie Hearn with DAZN”, which means that Haymon’s annual budget must exceed $125m, especially if you take into account any PPV revenue generated by Showtime (as that is extra cash that could potentially be used to subsidize fights).

I only wonder what Jim Lampley (HBO) and Dan Rafael (ESPN) are truly thinking about the recent long-term deals announced by Fox and Showtime, because they spent more than three years persistently ridiculing the PBC and claiming that it was about to go out of business? :yay:

"Premier Boxing Champions Breakdown New Fox Deal – Full Details"

News broke last night that the PBC, headed by Al Haymon, had secured a significant new deal in the sport of boxing. Full details have been made forthcoming below.

FOX Sports today announced it has reached a landmark four-year, multi-platform agreement with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) making FOX Sports the preeminent broadcaster for PBC’s top-tier championship fights featuring its biggest and brightest stars. The announcement was made by Mark Silverman, President, National Networks, FOX Sports and Alan Haymon, President and CEO of Haymon Sports, creator of the PBC series.

“We’re thrilled to expand our relationship with the PBC in coming years and take the world’s best boxers to the next level by exposing them to the widest possible audiences across FOX, FS1 and FOX Deportes,” said Silverman. “While FOX Sports has been invested in boxing as a key property on both FS1 and FOX Deportes, this will be the first time in more than 30 years that boxing will be regularly featured in prime time on network television.”

“We are pleased to continue with FOX Sports to showcase our unrivaled roster of more than 160 of the best boxers in the world, including 60 current and former world champions in the weight divisions that most excite the fans,” says Tim Smith, Vice President of Communications for Haymon Sports. “The PBC on FOX will bring the fans the best boxing and bring our boxers and the sponsors the biggest audience as we continue to pursue the goal of returning this great sport to mainstream prominence.”

With the four-year deal, the FOX broadcast network will feature 10 marquee fight nights in prime time each year, while FS1 and FOX Deportes will telecast 12 fight nights annually. The package includes FOX Sports-PBC Pay-Per-View events. The Emmy Award-winning FOX Sports production team will produce all the live events and more than 175 hours of original PBC boxing content per year across its channels.

“FOX Sports is delighted to support PBC fights with a robust boxing programming lineup across FOX, FS1 and FOX Deportes, including a variety of prefight and postfight shows,” said Bill Wanger, FOX Sports EVP, Programming, Live Operations and Research. “In addition, FOX Sports will promote PBC events across FOX’s multiple platforms, networks and powerful sports programming line-up, which includes the NFL, Major League Baseball, college football, college basketball, NASCAR, USGA, MLS and WWE SmackDown programming.”

To build anticipation for each fight, FOX Sports will surround each fight night on FOX, FS1 and FOX Deportes with top-level ancillary programming including multiple episodes of behind-the-scenes shows on FOX, fight-countdown preview shows, press conferences, fighter face-off shows, weigh-ins and prefight and postfight shows on FOX, FS1 and FOX Deportes. This programming line-up also includes two studio-based PBC-branded shows a month on FOX and FS1, with PBC boxer interviews and profiles. Fight cards will have televised preliminary fights on FOX, FS1 or FS2 and FOX Deportes.

All PBC on FOX Sports events and programming will be streamed live on the FOX Sports app, available in English or Spanish through the FOX, FS1 or FOX Deportes feeds. FOX Sports will offer a platform inside the app to allow viewers to stream the PPV events. In addition, boxing and the PBC will be prominently featured across the FOX Sports website, apps and social platforms.

FOX Sports and FOX Deportes will announce on-air personalities, as well as upcoming airdates and times soon.

FOX Sports and PBC launched the highly regarded primetime boxing series TOE-TO-TOE TUESDAYS on FS1 and FOX Deportes in the fall of 2015, featuring PBC’s brightest up-and-coming boxers. The deal was expanded to include several fight nights on the FOX broadcast network, including exciting title fights such as heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder defending his title in February of 2016, July of 2016, and again in February of 2017, plus the exciting welterweight showdown between Danny Garcia and Robert Guerrero in January of 2016.
