Jason Welborn vs Tommy Langford 2

Post by handsofstone »

Welborn defends his British Middleweight title against Langford on the Khan/Vargas card this weekend, looking forward to this, should steal the show if the first fight was anything to go by, never actually seen it but was a SD win for Welborn and was nominated for FOTY, I was mildly surprised when Welborn won that one

I thought Langford would've been able to use his height and reach to outbox Welborn but cant be too surprised really, Welborn is a handful as Macklin and Morrison found out, he's up and down but always capable of springing an upset, remember Gavin and Smith needing to crease him with bodyshots to get him out of there

I'm edging towards Langford trying to use his fundamentals in this one, got dragged into a dogfight last time by all accounts, maybe he's just not strong enough to keep Welborn off but I'll go for Langford to scrape another close one

I thought Langford would shade the first fight but I thought it would be close and I wasn't surprised when Welborn got the victory and I'm of the same opinion this time round. Never been overly impressed by Langford. Especially when fish face was trying to tout him as something he clearly wasn't.

I see Langford as an Aldi version of Darren Barker.

Aye I was dreading the inevitable looking Saunders world title fight, I wouldn't say I was happy to see Langford get mullered by Khurtsidze but the BJS/Khurt fight was miles better, read the other day that Khurtsidze got stabbed in jail last week

I was only recently wondering what happened to him as well. Wouldn't fancy a rumble with that wee bastard in the jail!!

Langford fought welborns fight last time and it cost him. He was hurt numerous times and tried to stand and trade. He needs to use his feet in the rematch. Really looking forward to it. Going for Langford points.

I think I would lean towards Langford in the rematch, presumably setting up a third contest.
In the first fight he allowed himself to be dragged into a bit of a scrappy affair which seems to suit Jason Welborn more.
The ring will be bigger this time and invite more movement and Langfords superior boxing will probably overcome Welborns more spirited fighting.

He was sticking up for his boss and a Colombian, I think, stabbed him up.

Think he could be looking at up to 40. Sure I read that number somewhere. No idea how likely that is.

On this fight, think I caught the second half of it on a Facebook stream. Welborn deserves credit, easy to say Langford fought the wrong fight but that's because Welborn was absolutely relentless. If I remember correctly he started well against Smith before Smith's skill up close and body punching shone through. Langford doesn't have that inside game so it's imperative that he keeps it long.

Hope there's in play betting available for this - pre-fight its a 50/50 but if Welborn starts having sustained success early I think Langford might struggle to keep him off.

Me too. I wasn't that excited about the whole card until I checked and Sky are showing it live here Sunday arvo. Now I'm fully into it, beersies in the fridge, and this Langford Wellborn rematch is probably going to be the best scrap of the night :OhYes:

I'm going to go for a Langford shut out. I just think this is his last chance at making a name for himself. If he sticks to his game plan and doesn't allow himself to get into a dogfight, he will have too much for Welborn.

Incredible fight, had Langford winning 115-112, cant argue too much about Welborn getting it, it was a pick 'em, I preferred the high workrate of Langford, especially as Welborn's work dropped to near zero in the last 5 rounds or so(barring the 12th) Welborn obviously had the power and Langford couldn't deal with the right hands, even in the 2 rounds when Langford was down I thought he was doing well but kept getting clipped

I thought it would only be a matter of time before Welborn caught him again especially with the gung ho tactics of Langford but fair play to Tommy he dug deep, gritted it out and was overwhelming Welborn with constant punching, there wasn't much on Langford's shots but they were bothering Welborn and winning Langford rounds

I would've liked to have seen Langford work the body more, he did in the later rounds but still not enough IMO, great fight though both men gave it everything :salut:

What a fight! (again)
I picked Tommy going in, and I thought he won it by 1 but by golly it was close.
Langford got up from that second hard KD, and I thought it was all over. Epic comeback.

Really good fight.

BUT I found it a bit uncomfortable at times how bad Tommy Langfords punch resistance has gone.

I’ve seen a lot of Tommys fight over the years and he’s getting worse.

Showed huge heart to get through 12.

While both have shown they are domestic standard and no more, they do need to be congratulated on a great fight.
Langford looks chinny as hell but has got the heart of a lion. Big respect to both

I wondered about Tommy's punch resistance too. Welborn isn't known as a puncher per say.
Then when I thought about Jason taking it full time in training now, and how muscular he looked coming in, maybe he has gained a bit more power?
He was planting his feet looking for the big right hand throughout the fight. And you could really hear it when he landed flush...

Would be fantastic for Welborn to win the belt outright now, I hope he does.

Thought both fighters came across extremely well in the post-fight interview - great to see sportsmanship like that after such a hard contest.

Being down twice cost Langford, ultimately.

The referee gave 2 knockdowns although there was another knockdown in one of the middle rounds when Langford's gloves touched down. There is a good chance the judges gave it as a knockdown. I would love to see the judges scorecards as I thought it was an easy fight to score bar that dubious round.
