De La Hoya Believes Ryan Garcia will take over from Canelo as Next PPV Star
No mention of Jaime Munguia..
At a very young age of 19, he has what it takes to be a superstar, but outside of that, his boxing craft needs to be polished - according to his promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions.
“KingRy did a lot of great things but he needs work,” De La Hoya stated. “He can still go back to the drawing board and keep working on his craft. He has the speed and everything that goes with it outside the ring. He has the charisma and can expose boxing to a whole new demographic. He has to remember that training and focus is what got him here.”
Garcia had a tough go around with Carlos Morales even though he did get the victory in his last bout. De La Hoya feels it is just what he needed at this point of his career.
“Being his promoter, I know what steps he must take to get to that level,” explained De La Hoya. “I did test him in this fight. It was a very difficult fight. Those are the tests that get you back to the gym and make you work harder. He didn’t throw enough jabs and he has to throw more combination. He has to bounce more on his toes and stay focused. He has a bright future and we’re going to take the necessary steps.”
De La Hoya isn’t coy on what he feels about Garcia. He thinks he will be the next pay-per-view star in the sport of boxing taking over the reins from Canelo Alvarez one day.
“We promote the only superstar in boxing that can generate over a million pay-per-views in the sport in Canelo Alvarez. I think Ryan Garcia is the next pay-per-view star. I like (Anthony) Joshua but he hasn’t fought here in the states. Even a fight with (Deontay) Wilder won’t crack 350,000 because nobody knows them in the pay-per-view industry. We’re motivated and we’ going to continue to look for the next young champions and next stars,” De La Hoya said.

Oscar is an arrogant prick

to reach that level you got to deliver in the ring, garcia is a promising prospect but still a long ways to go till he reaches a level of boxing where he can be a superstar
and before a certain age obsessed/determinist comes on this thread, its important to remember that lots of guys look promising at a young age but never make it huge, or even close to huge

He needs lots and lots of work, and I don't think dancing in his garage is getting him conditioned enough for boxing.

If we were talking about a 33-year-old amateur like Lorenzo Collazo, now that's someone jamamb could see as the next De La Hoya. But jamamb would have a hard time believing that a 20-year-old with accomplishments comparable to the accomplishments of 20-year-old De La Hoya and Alvarez could possibly have a career similar to them. I wonder if De La Hoya would know more about this subject than jamamb would.
I'm obsessed with age, you're obsessed with me. Kind of creepy that you pretty much don't post about anything but me, in threads that I'm not even in.

They're overhyping this kid, and pushing him too far too fast. They better tap the brakes on this kid or they're gonna get him knocked out by trying to push him as their poster boy too soon.

Garcia can fight. Just not at the star level yet.
He's brash, cocky and good looking. He lights up social media, even though he only has 16 fights, none against even a fringe contender.
Judging by the interest in him (most comments are negative, but much might be fueled by male envy) Ryan Garcia will very well be PPV star if it turns out he's as good as Oscar forecasts.
Plenty fans out there will pay to see him beat, a la Mayweather or Broner.
Oscar is probably spot on about a Wilder-Joshua PPV sales being in the vicinity of just 350,000.
I'd peg it at about 400,000 but an even lower figure wouldn't be a shock.

I agree that could be a real problem, but I think GBP will be very careful in how they match him, especially after the way he got rocked in the last few rounds against Carlos Morales.
I think GBP will concentrate more now on smaller opponents coming up in weight like he did with Fernando Vargas and Jayson Velez before the Morales gamble almost backfired.

You might be onto something there amigo. GBP was actually Mayweather's promoter when Floyd started to get promoted as the "villain" because Oscar could see that haters pay for PPV fights just as much as fans, just for a different reason. Arum was too old school when he promoted Floyd in the traditional manner and that is why Mayweather's biggest PPV with Top Rank was only 350,000 against Gatti (and Arturo drew in many of those viewers).SenorPipino wrote: ↑14 Sep 2018, 17:34 Plenty fans out there will pay to see him beat, a la Mayweather or Broner.
Floyd's PPV sales didnt really soar until GBP promoted him as the "bad guy" and Ryan Garcia's arrogance seems to be earning him a lot of haters too. On ability alone I dont think Garcia will ever be the "next Canelo" so he'll need a gimmick like that.
