Too much PPV boxing is killing the sport

Post by rjhsteel2001 »

With GGG v Alvarez tonight, then the Joshua v Povetkin, Groves v Smith, Warrington v Frampton, Wilder v Fury (If that happens!) and many more, i think the sport is pricing out fans.

We already pay towards Sky, BT Sports and allegedly to name a few and then we are expected to pay on top!!!

Boxing is making the audience smaller by the year.

All the top rated boxers are wanting too much money to fight, where is the money coming from? PPV. The bubble wont burst for a while yet.

Even at $80, this PPV is worth it.

Choalatito, Mungia, Lemieux vs O'Sullivan grudge match and a mega main event is worth the $80. If money is the issue get 4 people to chip in $10 each or food/drink.

PPV's are no doubt overused ...... However, this is not the card to complain about PPV's. Buy the fight.

How many fans are actually being priced out though?

People just buy as a group or stream anyway :-?

It's not going away.

PPV, or closed circuit television, has been a part of boxing for more than 50 years.

There's more PPVs than ever but that's only because promoters have learned that despite complaints, plenty fans are willing to shell out.

It's obviously not killing the sport. Unlike fans of mainstream sports, boxing aficionados realized and accepted long ago that embracing televised boxing requires an added expense.

I don't think there's more PPV now than there used to be. I feel like there was a period around 2004-2008 where boxing PPVs were nearly monthly.

I'm ok with the best fight of the year being PVV but bring a better card please. I've never seen THIS much dead time between the main even and the fight before the Main Event. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Maybe it's just the realism that HBO doesn't have any talent to spare on their resume of boxers. They lost the Kovalev/Alvarez rematch to ESPN+ so they basically only have a few fighters after this night. It's a sad day when HBO wilts to the competition of streamed media and various promotional companies. My only hope is that Lampley lands somewhere where we can continue to listen to his brilliance. He's the best that ever was IMO.

Agreed.. And 85 dollars USD is an obscene amount of money for any sporting event.

I guess it's not obscene if you can get a few million viewers to excitedly pay it.

And prelim numbers leaked yet on the PPV sales?

I seriously doubt it hits a few million ppv buys
The 1st fight only drew 1.3 million buys.
