Jaime Munguia vs Brandon Cook

Post by handsofstone »

Munguia defends his WBO Super Welterweight title against once beaten Cook on the Golovkin/Alvarez 2 card this weekend, love the look of Munguia, realy put a beatdown on Ali and Smith, he's fvcking massive at 154, doesn't have much head movement or regard for defence at all really but offensively he looks the bollocks, great shot selection, accurate and mega strong

Only know about Cook from when he was scheduled to fight Brook recently, think he got fvcked about from Brook and had family over from Canada for the fight, glad to see things worked alright for him in the end

Wonder if Munguia's getting as much stick back home for fighting Cook as Brook was??

Cook's only loss was by stoppage to an unbeaten guy called Kanat Islam, surely Munguia will just do as he always does and just walk though his opponent, never seen Cook but i'd be very surprised if he can stand up to the beating Smith took over 12 rounds

Nevertheless, Munguia is now a 1-35 favorite.

Munguia gets away with it on the basis he's busy as hell, this will be his 5th bout this year!

That's with the knowledge that Cook didn't look good against Islam (who's not fought since :/)

That plus his age. Ali, Smith and Cook within the space of 4 months isn't bad for a 21 year old. Probably wise not to rush him too much, although naturally there's more pressure as he has that belt.

He's young. Munguia can deal with the wars for several more years.

And he might even learn to use his reach better and avoid some inside brawling where he takes punishment.

Anyway whatever. Right now Munguia is a lot of fun to watch.

Agree, at 21 and being so busy, definitely time to fix a few niggles. Careful matchmaking and a good team behind him is all it will take, his natural attributes aside.

Munguia bulldozes over Cook in 3 rounds, predictable really but kudos to Cook he stood up to some heavy artilary and a few shots to the balls without going down, really though he took a one sided beating, commentary were a bit critical of Munguia but I thought he looked good, still raw as fvk but throws hard shots from all angles, great right cross, great left to the body, he throws plenty of power punches, he just overwhelmed Cook in there

He's freaking massive. Reminds me of JCCjr at 160.

Munguia only gets away with eating shots like that 'cos he's basically a light-heavy. It's like watching JCC XXL Jr at middle, utterly ridiculous.

I know he's only young & that but between him & Hurd at the moment, if you're a light-middle who actually fights at light-middleweight you might as well hit the sauna or the cakes 'cos they both look like they have 20lbs on every opponent—Smith's a massive light-middle & Munguia made him look titchy & I thought there was a good chance Hurd might get peckish & eat Lara.

If Munguia had half the natural power of Cuevas he'd literally kill the blokes he's fighting.

Munguia's a light-heavy whose relative youth allows him to abuse the living fornicate out of his kidneys & the rest of his renal system, so he can be 11 stone for like ten minutes 36 hours before a fight then they stick him on the pasta drip. He can definitely punch but it's relative, mate—he simply isn't in the same weight division as the dudes he's up against.

I don't know.

I just go by what fighters weigh in at. Munguia isn't weighing 175. Just 154.

If guys like him and Hurd look huge, it's just their bone structure. The weight is the same as all the other super welters.

I watched some You Tube video of Munguia a few years back when still a teen.

Very tall but thin as a rail. He was a welter. He didn't dwarf his opponents back then.

But Munguia is a young kid. He's growing fast and still filling out. He'll probably be a middleweight before 2020. But he's no light heavy.

The even bigger Chavez Jr. learned he was no light heavy when he was steamrolled by Fonfara.

Looks can be an illusion.

Wonder if GBP is dreaming of a Munguia-Canelo all-Mexican clash in 2020.

At 4 or 5 fights a year, Munguia will have built up quite a name for himself by then and probably smoothed over some of his flaws.

The boxing world would salivate over that matchup. Another Zarate-Zamora for the new millennium.

Chavez Jr weighed 181 on the "unofficial" scale the night he beat Rubio, which I believe is the night his corner stopped allowing him to be weighed 'cos people started to notice. If you think there's anything "natural" about regaining 21 1bs overnight I don't know what to say.

He had previous for using a PED that acts as a massive diuretic (in fact, they give it to racehorses for that reason—to flush out the steroids, in that case). When he fought at light-heavy he looked exactly the same size in the ring as he did when he fought at middle... 'cos he probably was, his kidneys etc just couldn't take the effort of shifting & regaining 20lbs plus of water any longer. He was always a light-heavy, he just got to fight vs. middleweights for a long while.

If you think Munguia & Cook weighed the same the other night I have a bridge to sell you.

Same day weight had Munguia 175.5 and Cook 164 I believe.

Also had Lemieux 179 vs Osullivan 166

If I'm not mistaken Chavez Jr skipped the post fight PED test after the Andy Lee fight.

Thanks for that mate. 21.5 lbs in one day, FFS. & Lemieux the fat ponce...! Neither of the telecasts I caught mentioned that the A-sides in those fights were obviously so much bigger than their opponents.

We might as well just scrap the fcking pretence of weight divisions in boxing & go back to Prize Ring-style matchmaking.

I mean, we already have, so we might as well admit it.

As he fills out and continues making 154. There is a possibility he could come in over 180 come fight night which is f crazy.
Im hoping he moves up to middle weight before then as that has got to damage to your body internally.

Meh.

I'm more concerned about the long term damage these pudenda do to the poor fvckers they get fed. There was a reason we used to have weight divisions, I think it was something weird & obscure to do with a concept called "a fair fight".

Good job we don't need those any more, eh?

PS: In case my sarcasm isn't coming across (I'm particularly sarky today, I had to put my fornicating dog down earlier & I started getting drunk soon after), I hope his bloody kidneys fall out & his eyes bleed.

Everyone bleats about "Ooh what if these drainers damage themselves by draining if you forced them to weigh in on the day of the fight, ooh ooh ooh they must be protected from themselves because weighing in the day before is so much safer for them!" & not one of those pudenda ever looks at the poor bastards getting steamrolled & says "What about the poor bastard's brain who's getting plastered by a bloke twice their size?"

PPS: & the response to the obvious rejoinder to that ("Why don't we all just let them do it then?") is obviously that not everyone can afford the same gear, so it's not a level playing field at all even if you let them do whatever they want.

PPPS: Not taking aim at you specifically jlh mate, just feeling kinda cynical ATM.

Shame about the dog... Have one myself but he is a pain in the a $$.

What's are the solutions? Same day weigh ins? Can't weigh x% more come fight night?
