What 's the effect of a Povetkin win?

Post by dalcumly »

1 Major story of how a drug cheat became world champion.

2 Financial problems for Hearn/Joshua ( sponsorship and appearances)

3 Doubt about Joshua's ability

4 Wilder fight off for foreseeable.

5 Re-match clause , but when and where.

6 strict drug testing for Povetkin before re-match.

7 Wilder v Fury fight then becomes a real title fight due to Povetkin's unpopularity???

Just a few suggestions, which makes me think that if the fight's close and goes the distance do I think Povetkin will get the nod?
No neither do I ?

"Financial problems for Hearn/Joshua"

The two of them already have enough cash never to have to do another days work in their lives.

If Joshua loses the rematch next April is even bigger and he gets another monster pay day!

Yeah this.

A Povetkin win allows there to be a lucrative rematch on PPV for Povetkin.

They're hardly going to be on the dole.

Probably Wembley next April.

I think AJ could get starched by Pov twice and still make millions fighting guys like Whyte & Fury.

It would be great for boxing on the global level. Casual fans are not paying attention to this fight. In fact, most serious fans are not giving this fight its due.

If Povetkin wins, every true boxing fan will be discussing it for weeks, if not constantly until the rematch. Russia, eastern Euro, and post Soviet countries will be suddenly engaged.

The rematch would be watched / followed hugely on the global scale.

As already witnessed in this thread, the racial aspect would rear its ugly head too.

I'd love it.

Bonus if Fury schools Wilder so the mega money dream match has lost its charm because both decided to faff around avoiding each other.

It would mess up Hearn big time. I have to say though for all the stick he gets he is one smooth talking snake oil salseman.

There is a recent one of him on IFL and although he is messing about with it his ability to recall names and details whilst waxing lyrical continuously about the promotion, is very impressive.

Give him his due. The guy can sell.

4 back to back 70+ K fans for Joshua is some going.

I’m in the minority there then who thinks it would be shite for the sport?

Povetkin, proven drug cheat, beats the best chance of an elite level heavyweight for a generation? Fvck Eddie, I dont like him as much as the next man but I want a top tier heavyweight, and more importantly, massive heavyweight fights between Joshua/Wilder/Fury.

As for financial trouble....Joshua is apparently going to bag himself £20m for this fight! He starts losing and the big paydays other fighters are hoping for against him, completely disappear.
Safe to say Joshua wont suffer too much financially if he does lose. He’ll earn more in this fight than Fury and Wilder will earn combined fighting each other. He’s different level when it comes to the £££

yes, Joshua is never going to be poor but when you're no longer the heavyweight champion and your invincibility bubble has burst where's the new contract with Under Armour etc. Where's the appearance money on this show and that show. There's an awful lot of people on the Joshua payroll.
By the way, and not being an accountant, can someone answer me this . If Joshua earns £20 million from this fight, does 25% not go to his manager and a further 10% goes to his trainer? That could equate to about £7 million being whacked off. If someone earns more than £100,000 a year do they not pay tax at 40%. I would guess that Joshua's pay out of £20 will be about £7 million. Great reward, and making him very rich ,but people with this amount of money don't live like you and I. They don't haggle with the car salesman to get a few hundred knocked off the 3 year old Mondeo. They don't have a fortnight's holiday in Benidorm and they don't rent a flat for a few hundred a month.
He will have accountants and lawyers who will advise and wealth management consultants , but they all need agents fees.
Towards the end of Henry Cooper's career, he was probably the most famous sportsman in the UK, and very wealthy. He became a 'member' at Lloyds. When the Torry Canyon sunk with a full cargo the insurance was covered by Henry's group at Llyods. He was bankrupted and had to sell his 3 Lonsdale Belts to survive.
When you live like a king, you need to keep earning, and a defeat to Povetkin would hurt. Just ask Mike Tyson.

Now way is AJ's manager getting 25%, he has his own company.

Manager is only on 10% when a purse if up to 30k I believe,so I would imagine a fee has been agreed and that will be less than 10% of the purse

It harms Joshua's legacy for sure.
Losing to an old T-Rex armed who lost to Wlad will turn off the casuals.
For boxing fans it makes a tasty rematch. We know HW fights can only take one punch to change everything. Povitkin has that punch.
No one is going broke.
There is plenty left to milk out of Joshua's BBC :o

The hype train is derailed, if he is KO'd he can say he was caught cold etc but if he gets outpointed or outfought then it would be tough to build him up again as the unbeaten record and invincibility has gone.

He could come back from a Fury or Wilder loss but coming back from a defeat by Povetkin would be hard work.

ZERO chance of him being outpointed. KO'd, yeah that can happen, but Povetkin outboxing him? No f*cking way that even come closes to happening.
