On This Day: Rocky Marciano improves to 49-0 after beating Archie Moore

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Nathan Fogg tells the story of an extraordinary heavyweight matchup, as two greats – Rocky Marciano and Archie Moore – met in the ring on this day in 1955

Image

THE final, and one of the most noteworthy names, on Rocky Marciano’s perfect 49-0 record; light-heavyweight legend Archie Moore could do little to prevent the fate that had held those who came before him. In his last bow Marciano won in typically emphatic fashion, trading knockdowns en-route to his 43rd victory by way of stoppage. Despite already having amassed over 100 knockout wins himself coming into the fight, the 38-year-old Moore had only moments of success against the heavyweight champ.

The fight got off to an inauspiciously slow start, Moore using all the experience of his 20-year career by looking to keep Marciano at bay with his seven-inch reach advantage and aiming to tie him up on the inside whenever the distance was cut. Marciano is mostly remembered for his brutish strength, but showcased his somewhat underrated boxing skills through a masterful manipulation of the ring, bobbing and weaving underneath Moore’s jab and then stepping inside at will.

In round two Moore shocked the 61,574 spectators at New York’s Yankee stadium by landing a sharp counter right after evading a lunging hook which sent the champion down to the canvas. The 4-1 favourite was up by the count of two, having seemingly recovered strongly. Although Moore failed to capitalise on the flash knockdown, often missing with wild shots, he continued to have success in the round, drawing blood from champion’s nose.

In the third and fourth Rocky began to work his way back into the fight despite a small cut opening under his left eye, landing clever combinations from body to head and generally outworking his challenger. In the latter round the tempo picked up as Marciano threw a series of hooks which trapped Moore against the ropes, who spent much of the three minutes covering up well in his cross-arm defence and avoiding any hurtful blows. Moore continued to outbox Rocky at times with his long jab creating problems, but Marciano eventually returned the favour in the sixth, scoring two knockdowns. The round started in typical fashion, with Archie circling around Marciano who continued to come forward in his bull-like style. As Moore backed up towards the ropes, Rocky stepped in with a huge left which just missed its target, but followed with an overhand right which landed flush. Despite beating the count, Moore looked in serious trouble as Marciano immediately pushed him back against the ropes.

What followed was one of the most incredible exchanges of punching ever produced in a boxing ring, Marciano landed huge, clubbing hooks and Moore not only managed to stay on his feet, but somehow found the strength to stand and trade. The next 45 seconds or so were a gruelling demonstration of non-stop action that is as impressive and exhausting just to watch today on a grainy YouTube video. Finding repeated success, Marciano landed a looping right that seemed to hit Moore on the top of his head, sending him down for a second time. Just beating the ten-count, Moore was on unsteady legs but survived the short remainder of the round.

Image

The seventh was a much closer, Moore, somewhat recovered, landed an eye-catching one two which seemed to stop Rocky in his tracks, who had perhaps punched himself out slightly. By the eighth Marciano had re-asserted his dominance however, stepping up the punishment as Moore’s right eye began to close. Sensing the nearing conclusion of the fight, both were throwing heavy punches in order to get the other man out. After many missed shots, Rocky connected with a right hook which toppled Moore for the third time. With just several seconds left in the round, the challenger was saved by the bell whilst still on the floor and was allowed to carry on into the ninth. From the bell Marciano came out with intent, unleashing lefts and rights that stopped a stationary Moore gaining any momentum back into the fight. In typical fashion for the exhilarating fight, Moore simply looked to stand and trade with the aggressor; at times landing big counters, but for the most part taking a heavy onslaught. After another incredible exchange, Marciano landed two quick left hooks that ended the fight, sending Moore down for the last time, slumped in his own corner and unable to beat the count.

The win would be Rocky Marciano’s last act in a boxing ring, cementing his legacy as an all-time great brutally dispatching a boxing legend. Moore, perhaps past his prime, would go on to fight for several more years as light-heavyweight king . His stock at heavyweight around had already fallen however, and Moore would come up short against the likes of Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson. In the unique history of heavyweight prizefighters, this fight will always be remembered. A truly great display of all that makes the division so exciting, the immense strength showcased as the two battled toe-to-toe goes unparalleled in today’s era.

#1- He waited until the contract with Al Weil was no longer in effect

#2- Cus D'Amato essentially blocked Marciano from getting Johansson after Floyd lost to the Swede

#3- Marciano was set to fight Johansson IF he beat Patterson in the rubber match, but when Floyd won it upset the deal

#4- Offers to fight Sonny Liston & even the young Cassius Clay popped up over the years. A Texas billionaire offered Marciano $4 million to fight Clay, which prompted SPORTS ILLUSTRATED to write an article entitled "Forty Is No Age For a White Hope" talking Marciano out of the money fight

#5- Quite frankly being the only "Undefeated Heavyweight Champion" was a lucrative business in & of itself where Marciano hob knobbed with celebrities, was on TV shows, etc. and oftentimes he was given money just to show up at some gym and say some nice words about a prospect & then leave once the cash was in hand

In an interview Marciano said he went into a secret training camp in 1959 to get into shape to fight Johannson but soon discovered he no longer had the hunger or desire he once had so knocked his comeback plans on the head.

It wasn't an interview, but was said allegedly among friends and Everett Skehan chronicled in his book. I somewhat doubt the story primarily because of three things:

-According to Lou Duva the contract to fight Johansson was a done deal & Marciano began shedding the pounds

-When Marciano went to Liston's training camp he overheard a reporter ask Liston IF he thought he could have beaten Marciano in his prime and he said that he'd beat him like he was nothing which prompted Marciano to take off his coat and get into the ring telling Liston to fight him right then & there and the training camp had to be broken up

-For the 1969 "Super Fight" video, Marciano lost over 50 pounds, and went into it NOT with an actors mentality but a fighters mentality, in the case of the punches suddenly became real he'd be ready for anything Ali could throw at him; considering the stories Ali himself tells of that experience the nearly 46 year old Marciano was messing him up

Conclusion? Him quitting, and not pushing himself, doesn't sound like Marciano at all. He was a very serious athlete, yes, but one month or so of training after a few years out wouldn't have been an indicator of anything. Athlete that he was he'd know it'd take 6 months or so to get into any semblance of shape that he once was.

I'd like to see that. But, again, it doesn't sound much like Marciano to have just given up after a month.

He didn’t say how long he went away for but said he kept in quiet. Bear in mind he was 35 or 36 in 1959, probably quite content in retirement and his body wasn’t what it was in his prime.. Some fighters may have kidded themselves and launched a comeback but with his unbeaten record at stake maybe didn’t want to risk it.

He did get insanely fat for a number of years. I imagine it was more to do with the fact that the poundage wasn't coming off as easy as he initially hoped. The body does plateau a bit after long stretches of no real hard activity.

Talking virtually a decade after the fact, I think his admission of him trying to train himself... Is the catalyst for him not following it through... Without a Charlie Goldman, etc to be on his ass & without friends and family encouraging him on... It's difficult to feel confident.

Archie's date of birth is somewhat of a mystery and has never been conclusively proved to my knowledge. Who knows what age he really was at that point in time.

In fairness it wouldn't have been that much of a shock. Archie weighed in heavier and was a well-known power puncher. Him catching The Rock off-balance and putting him down wasn't beyond the realms of possibility.
Ruthless-RKO wrote: 21 Sep 2018, 05:19Moore, perhaps past his prime
It could be argued that 1955 was slap-bang in the middle of Archie's peak. Archie got better at he got older (like JJ Walcott & Bernard Hopkins)...
Between Jan '51 until the day he lost to The Rock, Archie was beating top Heavyweights (Valdes, Baker) and top Light Heavyweights (Johnson, Maxim) alike. Archie was on-fire in his career when the faced The Rock.

He promised his wife that the Moore fight would be his last. If truth be told, he had planned to stop after he beat Cockell.

It's always easy Henry to say "way didn't he go for one more" and look for reasonings.

But to The Rock, the defense against Moore was definitely going to be his last fight. He was suffering from chronic pain in his lower back and after making his family financially secure, his wife had wanted him to think of the family and stop fighting.

A little known fact is that it was actually Moore who campaigned for the Marciano fight. He had predicted victory and said that he would knock Marciano out. So the discussions of that fight happening were instigated by Archie Moore.

And so The Rock (being the courageous and valiant Champion that he was) dusted off his gloves for one final time to fight this daring challenger who had a fearsome reputation and record as a knockout artist.

His 49th fight was Marciano's swan-song.

The other complication was Patterson had a rematch clause with Johansson, the rematch was one year later in June 1960 (which of course Johansson lost) and the rubber match was another 9 months after that. Marciano would've been 37 and around 5 years out the ring but the time he got around to being in the mix.

The Marciano back pain excuse I never bought into because his style was that of a bobber & weaver and it was extremely effective against the likes of Moore (who easily beat the top Heavyweight contenders).

The very fact that up until December of the same year was Marciano looking for another fight (ie, Earl Walls) and that The Rock was in talks of an exhibition bout with Floyd Patterson on the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports, etc shows me that his retirement was nothing physical.

It’s not uncommon for fighters to have plans to carry on fighting but the fact is he retired. He had just turned 32 when he had his last fight, still fairly young, and only a pro for 8 years but had been in some tough fights and was starting to slow down. His style wasn’t conducive to having a long career and no one who fights like that gets better with age or without picking up injuries. He gave family reasons for retiring but I also think he was finding it tougher so stopped.

Great fighter and great career. What’s more there’s something to be respected about an athlete who knows when to call it quits.
