Winky - as good as JD Jackson and Reggie Johnson?

Post by Autobarn »

I'm interested in ppl's opinions on this. Ppl are already assuming that WW is the best p4p in the sport and that he's going to outclass Taylor. But is Winky really as skilled and as versatile as two excellent southpaws from the '90s - John David Jackson and Reggie Johnson?

Jackson, WBO 154 champ (6 defenses), WBA 160 champ. Notable wins, over Reggie Johnson, Chris Pyatt, Steve Little, Tyrone Trice. Famous loss to an outclassed Jorge Castro, all downhill from then on

Johnson, WBA middle champ (3 defenses), IBF light heavy champ (2 defenses). Nearly beat James Toney in 1st title shot, even dropping Toney, wins over Steve Collins, Lamar Parks, KO'd William Guthrie. Over his best weight, he went on to lose one-sided fights to Jones & Tarver

Obviously Winky had more longevity than those guys. But does anyone agree with me that peak versions of Johnson & Jackson would be in a better position to beat Taylor / that they might well have had enough to beat Winky on their best night?

Ive used to watch Wright fight back in the days when he fought on tuesday night fights alot. I always thought he was a very good fighter with a very dull style. His victories over an undersized Mosely and Trinidad, who was probably faded, may have people overrating him a bit. A loss in a very close fight to Vargas has become a outright robbery in hindsight to alot of people due to Wrights recent success.
Could his success be the case of a hot streak againts the right opponents or could Wright be as good as advertised? Not sure really.

As for Jackson and Johnson; I believe at his best John David Jackson was just as good if not better than Wright. The ko at the hands of Castro was a case of Jackson being reckless, and it cost him not only the fight but it also ruined his career. He was nowhere near the same fighter after that.

Reggie Johnson at his best was very good, but a tad under Wrights level.

it's funny, Jackson losing to Castro and Wright losing to the similar JC Vasquez

Was Jackson's 2nd loss to Castro legit? I find it hard to believe Castro outworked him

jackson was shot and took a beating in the second fight against castro.

Johnson was robbed both times against Jorge.

JD Jackson & Johnson waaay better than Winky!

Physically bigger, more enetertaining fights, much harder punchers.
