Hearns vs. Duran = ouch

Post by generic screen name »

One of the greatest KO's in the 80's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sraf1P2o ... s%20Hearns

I'm surprised they didn't stop the fight earlier, especially when Duran went to the wrong corner.

Duran didn't look very good in that fight.

Brutal KO though, I love how Duran's corner rushes in to help him up to save him the embarassment of strugglinng to get to his feet on his own.

There ought to be a way to absolutely insure that the canvas is not slippery. The Budweiser signs and some other adverstising on the canvas are famous for creating a mine field that fighters should not have to deal with. I wonder if a canvas/shoe combination could eliminate the issue once and for all and forever.

This fight brings that to mind...as Roberto was slipping a bit, and against a puncher like Hearns you only need to be on unsure footing for a moment and everything can change. Not sure that would have made a difference but Duran should never have had to contend with it. No fighter should.

That was probably the greatest win of Hearn's career.

When a fighter goes down face forward it seems as though more often than not the ref isnt even gonna need to count ..... just wave them arms and motion for the ringside doctor to get his ass in there.

Awesome knockout... Still not quite as devastating as Foster-Quarry for me though :TU:

It was a nothing win. Duran NEEDED to be flattened like that to erase the stigma of No Mas in Panama. You think a man who went 15 with a peak Hagler seven months earlier couldn't have gone the distance with Hearns? Of course he could, But he didn't train - look at Duran's balance and conditioning! He was in no kind of shape.
He took the knockout, took the money and retired.

Duran also did that in the Barkley fight.
And the Moore fight. He actually sat down on Moore's stool.

Duran didn't show his usual impressive head movement, I dunno if it was due to Hearns's length, or just being a tad older.

That is why boxing needs more rematches, a fighter has a bad day and it detracts from his whole career. I would have liked to see all of the great fighters battle each other at least three times. Give a man a chance for redemption. Just think how interesting a Hagler/Hearns rematch would have been. Or Norton/Foreman. Even something like Jerry Quarry and Earnie Shavers just to see how a second fight would play out.

duran was at the top of his game when he was fully prepared and trained to his best! he mentions in the NO MAS fight he wasnt prepared and had bad cramps during the fight! but could that just be an excuse to cover the embarassment of NO MAS

Totally agree on this point, Kick. Rematches are good for the sport and good for the fans. It also allows us to look back with more assurance on our opinions.

The best thing is though, it makes rivalries grow. Fans get to root for their man and become more involved.

I think very few fighters (if any?) have comeback from such a defeat to win another world championship... and at an advanced age as well... thats why in many ways I'd say Durans win over Barkley was his greatest performance... :box: :box: :box:

After being KO'd by Hearns washed up, I NEVER thought that he was going to beat a big and muscular man like Iran. What a performance!!! This guy (Duran) got to be one of the top 5 greatest fighters that ever lived!!! :TU: :TU: :TU:

Yeah, Durans inside fighting was a joy to watch against Barkley... for me Duran vs Barkley is like Ali vs Foreman... one of those fights where a fighter shows you a pure exhibition of greatness... :box: :box: :box:

I noticed that too, after a few jabs, Hearns's right got there like a rocket and got full leverage. Hearns (I think in Legendary Nights) said that he felt his arm vibrate thats how hard he it him.

Wasn't your usual cross though... Hearns added a cruel twist to it, an added snap, it seemed to shoot off at the wrong angle before being turned over onto Duran's chin.

Duran was made to order for Tommy Hearns, so I did not find the out come to that fight, surprising. I remember watching it on CBS Sports Spectacular. The same thing would happen 9 out of 10 times, if they fought 10 times. :box: :box:

Even so, I don't think he'll get hit with a right like that 9 out of 10 times.

Their is as saying I don't think it's been said enough times to be a cliche so I'll use it, that your never as bad as you look in defeat and never as good as you look in vivtory. So I give Duran a decent chance in a rematch. Even if he doesn't win I think he makes a fight out of it. I don't really think you can just go by this one fight as to how good each fighter is.
