Mayorga - A bum who slipped through the net?

Ok , thoughts on last night....

Firstly, I have to say it's was an absolutely amazing performance by DLH. In the beginning I was rooting for Mayorga, but by the end of it I couldn't help but admit to being happy for DLH.

I never thought for a second that DLH could exchange with Mayo in the first round and put him down like that. At such an early stage it was already a major step to victory - Mayo looked completely shocked.

I was surprised at how DLH didn't push on after that with Mayo looking shaky with every punch that followed. I thought it might come back to haunt him, but maybe he just didn't want to risk his stamina for later in the fight.

The uppercut from Mayo in the third round was his best moment, violently rocking DLHs head back - but again, DLH proved his granite chin - has anybody seen him shaken from a head shot before?

The finish in the sixth round was everything I would not have expected from DLH. The determination in his eyes as he threw punch after punch - destroying the slugger by beating him at his own game. It was a breathtaking performance....... but....

I don't want to take anything away from DLH for his win, but does anybody else think Mayorga is a big name fighter who just happened to slip through the net? I have to admit I was all over the Mayo bandwagon after the Forrest fights and even after the Spinks fight, despite the loss.

How good is Mayorga? I know he talks a lot of shit and has a very unorthodox style. We all knew his skills were limited, but was it maybe his antics and the fact that he got into Forrests head that beat him? Was Forrest not focussed enough in the first fight and not confident enough for the second one? I think back then Mayo was such an unknown quantity, there was an aura of invincibility about him (even though he was TKOd early in his career). I think he has now been thoroughly exposed (didn't he look terrified for his safety in the 6th round when he turned around and took a knee?).

I'm sure he will probably retire now - how many more severe beatings can a guy take? Would anybody even buy into Mayorga being a big challenge for any of the top fighters again? I think they all beat him, and beat him easily.

he's a crude streetfighter, pure & simple!! if vernon forrest had boxed him like he should have he would have whipped AT LEAST as bad as cory spinks did!! but vernon underestimated mayo's power & chin & a streetfighter became a minor legend!!

even so...knowing the tremendous punishment that it took for trinidad to stop him, i was amazed how badly oscar hurt him...the trash talk came back to haunt ricardo!!! i have NEVER seen oscar so motivated & i i have literally seen all his fights (several in person)!!!

I like Mayorga alot.

Yes he's a tad off colour ( no more than Duran though ), but you have to admit, he added spice to the ODH fight more than some guy saying "I'm thankful for Oscar giving me a shot and I'm honored to be fighting such a legend" etc etc

In fact I caved in and re-signed on for Sky because the fight grabbed my interest ( only for a month though, have to see what June looks like first )

Not sure how overated he is though: anyone who beats a world class P4P guy like Forrest twice is real enough.

In fact, it looks like Mayorga only gets beat by P4P superstars - plus a top quality pure boxer/mover like Spinks - the type of guys you'd keep him away from if you managed him ( unless you're a ruthless cash your chips in fast killer like DK )

Must admit, I loved that stone cold look Oscar gave him as he walked away after flooring him in the first - quality!

Really hope Mayorga has made some serious cash after such tough matches.

Forrest should never have been P4P off the back of beating one guy, Mosley.

In the Spinks fight Mayorga was docked 2 points if it wasn't for that it would have been scored a draw.
Mayorga was a good fighter, who has been well promoted, remember when he fought Andrew Lewis, it was Lewis who was the undefeated heavy puncher, he was favoured to knock out Mayorga.
Against Forrest he used mind games before the fight to draw Forrest into a slugging match, Mayorga knew there was no way he could outbox Forrest so had to draw him in knock him out, he proved in the rematch that it was no fluke by out punching him again.

Mayorga found his level once he started taking on the likes of DLH and Trinidad, he was good but not a great.

I don't know if the guy has much business sense, i hope he doesn't blow all the money he's earnt as i wouldn't like to see him become a stepping stone for up and coming fighters.

How can a man who wins a world title on three separate occasions be a bum.k.o's 'six heads'lewis in 5,forrest in 3 beats him again on points, beats piccarillo comes close with spinks and loses to two legends in trinidad and de la hoya.Not everyones cup of tea,but certainly no bum.
Not my type of fighter,but at this stage deserves to be considered world class.

Delhoya was too big for him for 1 thing (looked 165), he landed on Delahoya time and again and even stunned him BUT he couldn't back him up and Delahoya just hit harder was far more accurate, faster and defended himself better. DLH and Trinidad are legends and Mayorga is still a notch above Gatti - I'd like to see ayorga back at Weleter fighting Gatti and Hatton.

A bum would never have beaten Forrest two times... Mayaorga is not an all time great but he is a very good and exciting fighter, to call him a bum is simply silly. With his ring style and life style Ricardo was never going to have a long peak and its worth remembering that he's as old as Delahoya... and the punch resistance doesn't look to be there like it used to be... Oscar was good the other night but Ricardo is also on the slide...

"you gotta show this guy that you aint gonna be pushed around, you gotta stand up to him!"

in my view that was the poorest considered advice he could have said.
should have told vernon to box and avoid getting involved in a scrap, use his jab and reach and stay away.
what was shields thinking????????

in the second fight, it was closer but the real damage had been done.

i loved mayorga for his uncompromising style but he should now pack it in.

DLH loses to Sugar Shane (twice)
Sugar Shane loses to Forrest (twice)
Forrest loses to Mayorga (twice)
Mayorga loses to Spinks

Do you also feel that in each case the greater lost to a generally inferior fighter, who just happened to have his number?

The thing is though that Mayaorga can't fight going backwards... so I can see where the trainer was coming from... Forrest just didn't have the strength to back Mayaorga up... and Ricardo was a fair bit stronger and sharper back then to how he is now...

Mayorga has probably slipped some since then, because Forrest was a good puncher, certainly at Welterweight, and a very big strong guy. Mayorga just seemed to terrify him. I'll never forget the beating Forrest gave Mosley in that 1st fight, you could hear Mosley grunting in pain from the body shots.

Come on, Forrest is a good guy... he's helped a lot of people outside of just boxing...

true forrest is one of the nicer guys in the sport and away from it. i'd like to see him in as good a shape as possible and fighting again soon. (you''ll
