Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. II - Rumours?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

 Former middleweight king Sergio Martinez is apparently coming out of retirement for another big paycheck against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The bout is expected to take place in Las Vegas on November 17th.

DAZN will stream the event.

Longtime Martinez representative Sampson Lewkowicz seemed concerned for the former champ's health, telling Boxingtalk, "I have nothing to do with this fight. I no longer represent my idol Sergio Martinez, but I am totally against this decision."

Shame... he must be bankrupt. He was falling apart before he retired. JCCjr will walk him down and beat him into injury retirement.

Chavez is shite but his body is still in one piece. Sergio's isn't. Unfortunately this only ends one way. Will be tough to watch.

I thought he was involved in the promotional/management side of the sport these days? Hoped that that was going well enough for him not to need to fight again.

I hate when a former star fighter is brought back as a sacrifice
It's one of the things I hate in this sport

Martinez is doing unnecessary thing. Chavez has more left, he's at least not a rusty and crippled oldman.

If this is true, it will be very bad move by Sergio. He practically ruined JCC in first fight but big part of that beating was his footwork. That is gone now.

That's only about 6 weeks away.

Although it was discussed several months ago, they seem to have put it together awfully fast.

What's the weight? Chavez would want it at about 170. Will Martinez?

What's Chavez' weight right now. He apparently walks around far north of 200 lb.

Chavez has been promising a comeback since the Canelo debacle almost 1 1/2 years ago.

All his plans fall through. He hates to hit the gym.

I'll be very surprised if this one comes off in 6 weeks.

Is it at 175? There is no way Chavez can even make 168 so quickly.

Is this signed or just some sort of verbal agreement?

I don't believe that Junior begins training unless there's an actual signed contract.

Self-motivation is not his strength.

Neither Jr's, nor Sergio's twitter accounts mention anything. This is just fake news.

I also see nothing on the internet reporting that this fight is a go.

Lewkowicz has said:

"I was not involved in this deal. I want nothing to do with this. I won't be there and I will not be watching the fight. Martinez will always be my idol, but I can't support him with this. This is totally crazy. He's been out of the ring for over four years. This is not an issue of money, Martinez is still a wealthy man. I have no idea why he is doing this."

"This is very dangerous, for him to do this. I don't believe Chavez Jr. will even make the weight. And even if he does, the next day he will be a cruiserweight at 190 or even 200-pounds. This is totally crazy. This is dangerous risk for Martinez. I have no involvement with any of this and I won't be watching this fight."

Chavez Sr. reported the fight:

“It’s a surprise, the negotiations are really very strong, I thought it was a joke about Maravilla Martínez, but it seems to be a fact. I know that many people will not like it, but they will see November 17.”

“I think we all have a new opportunity in life, this is the opportunity for Julio to get back in his weight. Let’s see. If his weight does not give the width, he will definitely retire, otherwise he will keep fighting."

Lewkowicz and old man Chavez seem to be the only unofficial official sources assuring this fight has been (or is on the verge of being) made.

Rumors say that the fight would be a Hearn DAZN blockbuster.

I'm sure Hearn would maybe have mentioned something, but it's not like he own DAZN.

Giving back one of your biggest wins

I don't get it Sergio.

I wouldn't think he needs the money, but hell he might. I don't know. I don't give him much chance here. Even if he's able to box well for a few rounds, no way Chavez doesn't catch up to him inside 10 or 12 or whatever this is scheduled for. Martinez's legs definitely ain't gonna hold up for the distance, if they even hold up for a short while. Hell Chavez might bulldoze right away.

I remember the dayz Sergio was thought to be a viable threat to Floyd's undefeated record. Doesn't feel that long ago.

Lewkowicz claims that Martinez remains a very wealthy man.

You would think that the commission would take a long look at the health and current condition of Martinez, before approving this matchup.

Maravilla is 43, hasn't fought in more than 4 years and hasn't won a fight in over 5 years. He's been injury riddled since the Chavez fight in 2012. And he was savagely battered in his last fight by an over the hill Cotto.

And now Martinez might fight a much younger Chavez who will probably weigh in between 170-175? It makes no sense.

It's not like this is some must-see super fight that is going to bring in a slew of dollars to Nevada.

The NSAC might feel obliged to do the right thing and turn a thumbs down on this matchup.

At the time that was being discussed he certainly would've been a viable threat to Floyd's undefeated record.
