Jaime Munguia Hopes To Fight in Tijuana Before The End of 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia (31-0) made his 2018 campaign a perfect 5-0 with a third round demolition of Brandon Cook two weeks ago in Las Vegas. The fight served as the chief supporting bout underneath the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin 2 main event that was distributed by HBO pay-per-view.

5 fights in one year for a champion is virtually unheard of in this day and age but if Munguia has his way he will enter the ring one more time before the calendar flips to 2019.

"I want to fight in Tijuana in front of all my countrymen. I want to bring a big fight to Mexico and I would love to do it next. I hope to be able to fight again in November or December," Munguia told BS.com.

The 21-year-old burst onto the seen in May when he knocked out Sadam Ali and captured his first world title in the process. Since that victory he has fought in Las Vegas twice and has seen his popularity increase exponentially.

"I am very happy to not only fight but to feel all the support of the fans. A lot more fans know who I am now and I am going to continue to work hard. I am very motivated to continue and to progress in the sport," Munguia explained.

As our conversation ended it was relayed to Munguia that WBC super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo and his twin brother WBC interim middleweight champion Jermall Charlo had nice things to say about his performance.
Munguia smiled and said that he welcomes a fight against either one of them.

"Sometimes they say good things (about me) and sometimes they don't say such nice things," Munguia said while laughing. "But I would like to fight either one of them in the future."

A fight in November or December would be his 5th of 2018.

Munguia had one fight this year before leveling Ali.

Is Munguia in the running for Fighter of the Year? Unlike most modern champions, he's eager to fight.

That alone qualifies him for the award.

I realize that it will undoubtedly go to a bigger name who has more mainstream recognition.

Wilder and Joshua have to be leading candidates, especially if Wilder takes down Fury.

But I like that Munguia puts the "Fight" in Fighter of the Year. Engaging in possibly 4 world title fights in one year is unheard of in this era.

And Munguia didn't start that run until May.

Ah. Usyk should win it if he beats Bellew.

Briedis / Gassiev / Bellew.

if usyk beats bellew then only wilder for me could still possibly beat him (if he beats fury---fury and ortiz)

That would give Usyk 3 major wins this year, so he would definitely warrant consideration.

Of course there are a hundred FOTY awards given out these days. Every boxing organization and many media outlets name one.

So it's unlikely to ever be unanimous.

And he'd need to beat Fury decisively too. No controversy.

Onto the subject at hand. I love this kid Munguia's desire to stay busy, and keep active. I wish more name fighters kept this active.
