The Legend of The Tainted Orange May 6 1955,

Post by Expug »

In Philly Harold Johnson looses by tko to Julio Mederos in the second round. Johnson staggers and stumbles back to his corner after the first and second rounds complaining of dizziness. He wants to continue, but the referee stops the fight and awards the bout to Mederos.Johnson hasnt been hurt by any punches but his behavior is very peculiar. His story: He was given an orange by a stranger before the fight. He felt disoriented afterwards and felt he must have been poisoned. Tests on an orange peel were inconclusive. The powers that be were not amused and boxing was suspended in Philly for 90 days. Johnson is an honorable man I doubt seriously that he tossed the fight but this is a strange event. It was also on national T.V.

..remember it well. may 6 is my birthday.this has nothing to do with the fight, i just wanted to get it in. as i recall, johnson really did look sick. it struck me at the time if they were going for a tank job they wouldn't have made it appear so peculiar...so bizzarre (i never know how to spell that word, so i just double the ones in doubt.) the closest ring record book to me as i sit here is the 1971 edition, and it has it as a kobymederos. i'd go with the no contest ruling considering the aftermath in which harold peed drugs into a bucket.

I'm pretty sure that Johnson was 'knobbled' as he seems to be a very honourable guy. Whoever laced the apple probably hoped that it would subdue Johnson rather than almost ko him... sticking things into apples is a rather haphazard buisness so I'm told. Its a shame really as this night put Johnsons career off the rails for a long while and despite it seeming obvious that he was innocent of anything I think this incident tainted his career for sometime. Certainly people used it as a good excuse to avoid fighting him for a good few years...

About ten years ago I went to a gig in Wolverhampton must have been either Suede, Boo Radleys or maybe Gene.

Anyway, spent the entire gig up front in the 'mosh-pit' by the time I got home later I was drenched in sweat and unbelievibly thursty so I downed in one a pint of ice cold pure Orange juice.

Ten seconds later I brought it all back up again.

Ice Cold Vomit.... yuk. :(

The best Moshpits I've ever been in have invariably been at Shane Mcgowan/Popes/Pogues gigs... though the downside is you can never tell what you might get drenched in!.... :o 8)
