Just a guess
Not the right answer, but good reasoning

First clue - the fight took place before (but not immediately before) the Maussa fight

No sorry - but again excellent reasoning!

Clue 3: The fighter in question's bout with Hatton was the only time he fought in the UK and he only fought twice outside of his home country again after the Hatton fight.

Sorry - no - another good suggestion though

Last clue (and then I'll give the answer) - the fight went the distance

hmmm going by elimination its gotta be vilches then id think

ah, here we go, 22 tatooed on his head because hes mad :oo

not sure its actually visible with the hair on though
CARLOS VILCHES thinks that he is going to upset Ricky Hatton at the MEN Arena, Manchester, tonight, and also believes that numbers have alternative meanings. Following this logic, the 27-year-old from Santa Rosa, Argentina, has a No 22 tattooed on the back of his head. So, what does 22 mean? “It means ‘mad’,” Vilches said through an interpreter.

Well done! The Ring reported him as having "...the number 22 shaved into the back of his head. In his homeland, this would serve as a warning of a crazy man" - so if it was a tattoo - apologies for my misleading clue.

Marvin Camel vs Roddy McDonald, may 83. Inaugural vacant ibf-cruiserweight titlefight. Right off the top of my head of course😜just wasn't sure if it was rocky macdonald or roddy mcdowall. Is it even that one or some trick behind the question?

It had to either Hagler or Holmes.

Close. Camel vs McDonald was 13th Dec 1983, but the title fight I'm looking for was earlier that month...

I think you're right with Hagler / Scypion. Originally I was looking for Bobby Berna vs Seung-In Suh for the vacant IBF junior featherweight title on 04/12/1983 (because this, originally, was a query submitted to The Ring magazine in 1987 so looks like they may have got their answer wrong at the time). Well done! :salut:

I think Orbtastic has nailed it and what I thought was the correct answer has turned out to be wrong!

Was it Johnny Brown losing to Young Fogelman on Fogelman's debut - points 07/02/1921? Fogelman never boxed again and Brown became British bantamweight champ in 1923 by beating Bugler Harry Lake.
