What's next for George Groves?
What's next for George Groves?
Groves isn't in the critical age for a boxer, but he has already had a helluva career with impressive ups and hard downs, he had some reserve-taking fights. Should he retire? He had actually considered a possible retirement in a case of Chudinov loss, as far as I remember. He won then and he made even bigger statements after that, but now he has finally suffered another KO defeat. Is it better to retire now or does George have some other opportunities? What are your thoughts?
Re: What's next for George Groves?
I’m a big groves fan, but honestly, even at the age of 30 I think he should hang em up
He’s had a career that British boxing should be proud of though.
Low - frustration on missing out on Beijing for degale
High - beating his big rival degale for the British title. A fight many would let “marinate”. Great that two young undefeated lions put it on the line
Low - fall out with booth in the Froch 1 camp
High - what he did in and out the ring for Froch 1 was incredible really. Groves made the fight much bigger with his pre fight talk etc. His performance vs Froch might still be his best
Low - ref howler stopping him in Froch 1
High - making 80k event with Froch. We can take it for granted now Joshua does it every time. But this was huge. And it takes two to tango, but groves more than played his part
Low - devastating ko defeat to a perfect punch
Low - SD loss to jack. No shame in the performance, but nit his day
High - teaming up with McGuigan and rebuilding when a lot said he was finished
High - stoppage win over chudinov to finally reach the summit after 4 attempts
High - clinical win over Eubank jr to silence more doubters
Low - dislocated shoulder requiring surgery
Low - put away emphatically by Smith
It’s been a rollercoaster. But groves looked slow compared to his usual self vs Smith. He’s had the shoulder problem, and I never belief boxers are as good as new, despite what they say.
Groves career in a way could have been even better with a more stable foundation, for example if the booth fall out didn’t happen etc. But really he should be appreciated, and his perserverence to finally win the WBA is huge.
So I say good luck to him. Nothing left to prove

Re: What's next for George Groves?
Cash out PPV fight against De Gale, win by 5 rounds. Retire. Great career & a genuine guy.
Re: What's next for George Groves?
Does he need a cash out fight?
He made 2.5m from losing last night, plus he would have made plenty from his quarters and semi finals, throw in his share of Wembley, a Vegas fight. I think George is pretty set for money.
If I am George, I retire. Nothing left to prove.
Re: What's next for George Groves?
Plenty of fights left for him that would sell....
Eubank Jrn would love the opportunity to avenge his defeat
He will always have the rematch with Degale that will sell regardless.
Fielding and Ryder are both options.
Maybe even BJS too if he moves up?
Plenty to do.... It's just if he's wants to keep doing it

I'd like to see him beat eubank Jnr again
Re: What's next for George Groves?
No point in a Eubank rematch without a belt on the line.
I think he should call it a day.

Re: What's next for George Groves?
There are plenty of fights out there for Groves and I suspect he will box on but I’d like to see him retire now.
Re: What's next for George Groves?
I think, he's still credible, but you can't find a perfect moment for retirement (unless you're Lennox Lewis), so it's probably better to retire now, cause current accomplishments are good and future in the sport can really held some unpleasant surprises.
Re: What's next for George Groves?
He can have a break now, heal up and see what he wants to do. He won’t be short of options
Re: What's next for George Groves?
There’s probably at least one more big money fight out there for him so presumably he will continue. I didn’t see the fight but he was ahead on the cards so it’s not as if he was being systematically broken down by Smith by the sounds of it...
Correct me if I’m wrong!

Froch had the perfect retirement.

Re: What's next for George Groves?
I would like to see him either retire or rematch Degale before retiring.
He's proven himself a very good fighter, competitive at world level with great fighters and with terrific power, speed and offensive skills; just kept from scaling the heights of the sport by a slightly sub-par chin and average stamina.

Re: What's next for George Groves?
I honestly would rather see Groves vs Degale again than Callum Smith vs Degale because I think Groves vs Degale would be the more competitive match of the two. Maybe after Callum gives Degale some of the same ass kicking he gave Groves they can fight each other again
Re: What's next for George Groves?
Was he ahead on the cards ?chinarich wrote: ↑29 Sep 2018, 10:17 There’s probably at least one more big money fight out there for him so presumably he will continue. Saw the fight and although nip and tuck until the ko I'm surprised at that .
Smith had landed heavier shots in the 2 or 3 rounds previous .
Re: What's next for George Groves?
they were even
57-57
59-55 gg
59-55 smith
and then the backup 4th judge for a tie breaker had it 58-56 groves

Re: What's next for George Groves?
Groves can retire with money in the bank and his head held high, quality career
Re: What's next for George Groves?
nah it was 59-55, the 58-56 was from fernando barbosa for groves
the only round the 3 main judges were unanimous on was the 6th, which they all had for groves

Re: What's next for George Groves?

Re: What's next for George Groves?
One fight too many for George.
Some fighters age quicker than others.
Pleased he managed to get a world title I've enjoyed watching his career.
Hope he retires and enjoys his retirement
