You could be say 10 weeks in and paid for transport to and from the gym, sparring partners, strength and conditioning coach, dietitian, tape, gym fees, all sorts of stuff with nothing at the end of it. That happens a couple of times in a row which happens and you can be in serious financial trouble. What normally happens is good fighters take away jobs underprepared to pay the bills then next thing you get labelled a bum, I've sparred some top talents that can't sell a ticket so can't fight as nobody will put them in the home corner and they are too good to go in the away corner. It's a messed up game
having read the book, the journey man,it seems very few boxers make a living out of pro fighting , i remember spencer oliver still working in his carpet shop before that unfortunate fight , ricky burns lately going bust

Or is the trainers 10% took off the gross ?

How does the split work ?
Trainers 10% comes off the gross then come expenses the managers 25% comes out of what is left so for example say the purse is £1000 trainer would get £100 and then say 300 expenses so that would leave 600 then the manager would get his 25% which is 150 leaving the boxer with 450

Plenty of manager take their cut off the top end.
I remember a story about Jess Harding and Spencer Oliver, that Harding said because Spencer sold so many tickets that he never took his managers cut off him.

Well if that’s the case the boxer should put a complaint in to his area secretary

The managers and trainers fee entitlements etc are fully explained to all boxers at their initial interview with their area council this is definitely the case in the midlands area and indeed should be in all areas

I remember reading that Michael Jennings only got £100k for taking the fight against Miguel Cotto in Madison Square Garden.

And I know you'd be thinking - big name at a big venue, for a World Championship... There'd be plenty of money on hand, but alas a meager 100k.

Can't pretend that one didn't shock me.

Didn’t Danny Williams get a pittance for fighting Tyson? Remember FW feeling bad that he didn’t take us cut.

Dave Ryan home corner (English Title vacant) 5k

Shayne Singleton away in Manchester (English Title defence) 5k

Derry Matthews away corner (commonwealth title challenger) 8k

Darren Hamilton away corner (British Title challenge) 10k

Willie Limond in Scotland (British Title defence 30k

Frankie Gavin away corner (WBO intercontinental title) 14k

Take away 25% for managers and training fees plus a 12 week training camp and it equates to absolute peanuts, the only fight worth a carrot financially for me was the Limond one hence the reason why I took it. That's why it makes me chuckle when idiots say I'm coming back for a pay day! What payday! Regular fighters on sky sports will get paid more but a normal domestic grinder like me and they will all get in and around the same as the figures I've quoted. Hope this helps, and for the record I'm one of the lucky ones, I got paid more than most fighters I know, the problem is if you turn the fight down due to the purse been rubbish they just pick up the phone to the next fighter and keep going till somebody takes it. It's a tough old game to make a few quid

I find that hard to believe mate tbh I can assure you that I was on midlands area council for about 15 years and all applicant boxers were interviewed and everything was explained to them extensively however I carnt speak for other areas

Not sure of the amount but I recall Fwank once saying the promotional company for Tyson vs Williams went tits up and Danny didn't get paid. I believe Fwank paid Danny out of his own pocket instead.

Cheers, the only explanation of the contract was by my soon to be manager ! I had a few cracks at the ABAs and made the quarters one year so had a track record to back me up but other than that I don’t know why .....just remembered my manager held a position with the area council wonder if I got out of it that way ?

Surely there is a cap on what the trainer gets?

For example if Callum Smith got the reported 5 million for the groves fight does that mean Tesco Joe pocketed 1.25 mill?

What about Rob McKracken and AJ? He must be a multi millionaire Many times over?

Boxers earning big money (very rare) generally negotiate a fixed fee or sometimes smaller percentage.

Didn’t Brendan Ingle say something along those lines? When boxers are up and comers a percentage they’re happy with but when they start making some dough they want a fix fee. Wasn’t it Naz when he got his first big purse and Brendan was spending his cut on revamping / extending the gym and Naz came in saying that’s a big % you’re on and I think it’s too much and have him a fraction and that’s when Brendan knew his days were numbered?

I think it’s pretty reasonable that a trainer’s cut goes down to a much smaller percentage / fixed fee should a boxer become properly successful. Imagine Floyd paying out £20 million or something to uncle Roger ever time he fought

Do you remember when Oscar could not reach an agreemnet for Floyd Sr, to train him for Floyd Jr.?
Sr. wanted a flat fee of I believe $2 million. Oscar was only offering something in the neighborhood of 250k

The tensions between Ingle & Hamed including the trainer's cut are well documented in the book 'The Paddy and the Prince' if anyone is interested.
