Joseph Parker vs. Alexander Flores - 15 December 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker (24-2, 18 KOs) has finalized his next opponent.

Parker is now scheduled to face Alexander Flores, who has a record of 17-1-1, with 15 wins by knockout.

Parker will look to bounce back after two consecutive defeats - a twelve round decision loss to Anthony Joshua in their unification bout in March, and then a twelve round decision to Dillian Whyte in July.

The fight with Alexander takes place at Christchurch's Horncastle Arena on December 15.

Alexander has never been in the ring with someone of Parker's level, and most of his wins have been against overmatched competition.

When he stepped up against Charles Martin in 2014, he was knocked out in four rounds. And then in his following fight he fought to a split draw with a 4-4 fighter.

"For me, boxing is all about the challenge - and this is another big one. I know what is at stake. I need to win and win well. I need to knock him out and I will knock him out. But I can't focus on that, I need to focus on getting better, each and every time I get in the ring," Parker said.

Of course, even trainer Kevin Barry admits that another loss would see the end of his boxer - especially at the top level.

Judging by Flores record, Parker should get the victory fairly easily. In saying that I have never seen Flores in the ring. Does Joseph have anything to worry about?

I'm glad that Parker is back out soon and with a beatable opponent. He needs a couple more W's before trying to get back into contention.

This is a good bout for Parker. A nice and easy win, boost confidence, hasn’t fought in NZ in over a year and 3 fights. He should be looking to end the bout after 6 rounds.

Sensible comeback opponent, should be a comfortable win for Parker, possibly by stoppage.

His record looks ok on paper (to a casual observer, at least), with his only loss coming to a former 'world champion,' which should make it easier to promote than a journerman/gatekeeper type who in reality would probably put up just as much of a challenge.

Don't know yet, usually around $50 this should be cheaper but probably not. I've only paid for the Joshua and Takem fights, the rest I watch later on

I think he should look for a stoppage. If he can get one.

2 of the scorecards were 118-110..

Also since then, he took AJ the distance and nearly beat Whyte. He drew with Whyte realistically if you don't count the headbutt knockdown in round 2.

From the clips I've seen of Parker vs Fury (and the seeming consensus) is that even if you scored the fight for Parker it was more of a case of Fury throwing it away as opposed to Parker winning it.... whereas he definately lost more decisively vs Pulev.

And yes the Whyte fight / performance is also another reason his stock going down. Whytes' 3 big fights include 1) Browne - yes good display, Browne was in terrible shape. 2) Chisora - I think Del Boy won, 3) Joshua - yes he stunned Joshua but aside from that moment he lost every round big. Whyte deserve a shot at the title, but I don't think anyone gives him a chance of actually winning it - unless you count Charr.

Prior to AJ we were talking about Parker as the #3 Heavyweight and better than the likes of Povetkin / Pulev etc and an actual feasible threat to Johsua and Wilder. It was considered a no brainer about who would win between Chisora and Parker - now it would be considered a 50:50 fight and Fury at the weekend didn't help. Fury at the weekend showed he's not quite a world level yet, but vs Parker he looked a world level talent.

Joseph Parker: After Flores, Hopefully I'll Be Fighting in The UK

"There isn't a lot of footage out there on Flores but he has a good record and he is young. He is coming into this fight with not a challenger mindset but with a mindset where he is going to beat me and make his mark in the heavyweight division. His record is quite good with his high knockout percentage. I think he is the type of fighter to come forward and I heard he is going to try to knock me out. That makes it interesting and should make it a good challenge," Parker told BS.com.

This will be Parker's first fight at home since he defeated late replacement Rozvan Cojanu in May, 2017. His previous three fights have taken place in the United Kingdom.

Parker is happy to have a homecoming fight but understands the must lucrative and biggest events will take place thousands of miles away from home.

"It is always great to go back home. I got family back home, (head trainer) Kevin (Barry) has family go back home. For us it is important to go back and rebuild and also to give back to the fans in New Zealand for all of their great support of what we are trying to accomplish. I think if all goes well this will be the first and last time we fight in New Zealand for a while. Hopefully we get a victory and we fight back in the UK next year," Parker explained.

Prior to the Joshua and Whyte bouts, Parker outpointed Hughie Fury in the United Kingdom. He doesn't believe it will be long before he is back in the mix with the division's elite.

"If all goes well we will sit down as a team and discuss what is the best next step. But I think we won't take long to get back to the top if everything goes well. I would have loved to fight those guys now but as we know in boxing there are steps you have to take to get there," Parker told BS.com.

Joseph Parker on Dealing With Adversity Versus Dillian Whyte

July 28th didn't go the way that Joseph Parker had hoped. He entered the ring four months after his first professional loss which came against WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO champion Anthony Joshua.

Parker was boxing well until he was knocked down by a head butt that affected him throughout most of the fight. He fought back and even knocked Whyte down in the 12th round but by that time Whyte had built up a lead and was able to secure a unanimous decision victory.

"Looking back on the fight - good on Dillian - he got the win that day. There are a lot of things that happened that we couldn't control but we will be back. It is just about learning. I got some advice from (his trainner) Kev (Barry) and sat down and watched the fight and worked on a few things that we didn't do well in the fight," said Parker.

As for the head butt, Parker said there wasn't really any way to prepare for it but said that if it happens again he will be able to deal with it better.

"These things happen in boxing. It effected the body and the mind and the plan we had in place but you can't help it. You can't practice in sparring getting a head butt for when it happens in a fight. Now that I have gone through it I think if it happened I would be able to control it better,"
Parker explained.

The 26-year-old Parker believes that he could have landed the big punch that dropped Whyte earlier in the fight and that is one of the things that he is working on in his current training camp for Alexander Flores.

He said that he is looking to be more aggressive to land his power earlier in his fights.

"I think I could have done that earlier on in the fight. I landed a good shot in the last round and he went down. It just shows that even though we went through a hard time in the fight - being knocked down by a head butt and by a punch - we were able to as a team survive and come back and finish strong. It is something new for us because we haven't been knocked down before but it shows that we can come back," Parker told BS.com.

If Parker makes a big statement, then the HW division gets even more interesting. He's only 26 and has a lot of fight left in him.

It's gonna take more than KO'ing this guy to make a statement, I'd like to see him on AJ's undercard in April against Chisora/Whyte/Takam. If he knocks out any of them he will be close to a title shot.
