GGG v Canelo

Post by Stuarty »

Just sat and rewatched the fight again. I had GGG shading it but couldn't argue with a Canelo victory if I'm honest. Got me thinking, how evenly matched were these two guys? Different fighting styles but there was nothing between them over 24 rounds! Who were the last two fighters you can remember who were so evenly matched? Barrera v Morales? Holyfield v Bowe?

Begs the question, how would the fight have went if Canelo fought GGG a year or so earlier? I think GGG is a better fighter but Canelo just got him at the right time. That's taking nothing away from Canelo because he's blossomed in to a hell of a fighter himself! I'm a big GGG fan but I don't feel bitter over the result of the second fight. The only thing that sticks in my throat is over 24 rounds and 6 score cards only one seen it for GGG and that's pretty unfair in my opinion......

the 2 most evenly matched were Pac vs Marquez until that knockout.
But yes GGG and Canelo are very evenly matched. And GGG is past his prime I wish this fight would of been 2 to 3 years earlier.

I forgot about Pac v JMM good shout.... I always thought JMM had Pacs number though. Toe to toe JMM usually got the better of the action. Pac had the power to knock him down a few times and that's what swung some of the fights in his favour. I was a big Pac fan but it was pretty sweet watching JMM KO him even though he was more than likely roided out his tits.....

I was a huge JMM fan. I guess that's why it took me so long to like Pacquiao.

Just finished watching this fight again and I've deffo got GGG winning by two, arguably three..... Round 8 was a cracker. GGG started the better but Canelo then started to hold centre ring and land his shots... The round finished with GGG starting to show the better footwork and led the better shots. World class boxing!

I like Marquez myself mate. He was a classy counterpuncher. Hard as nails as well! Loved his fight with Barrera! MAB was a hero of mine as a kid but JMM had his number in that fight! Ricky on this board is a big fan of JMM :TU:

The first fight I had GGG by 4
The last fight I had GGG by 2 but I would not argue with someone having Canelo by 2. Several rounds were close.

But no way could I see Canelo winning the first fight

That's exactly the same way I saw it mate. Some of the action was just absolute world class though! Really top quality stuff!

There were some rounds where the action just swung back and forward. One minute you were marvelling at the footwork of GGG then Canelo would come back in to it and show some world class footwork and movement of his own! Two world class guys going toe to toe!

Two world class fighters fighting at the top of their game! Putting everything on the line! Technically amazing! It's just a pity the judges weren't on their game over the 24 rounds because the two fights deserved better scoring!

Not that I'm saying GGG deffo won, that's just my interpretation but in hindsight over 24 rounds for only 1 judge to see it in GGGs favour is pretty poor...

It's funny because Pacquiao was obviously the greater fighter who achieved things Marquez couldn't, but Pacquiao just couldn't find a way to outsmart him. I'm 1 of the few who thought Pac edged the 3rd fight. The 4th was insane though, Pacquiaos performance was incredible actually, he was going after Marquez like the fcking terminator, but it was JMMs ring IQ that won the rivarly with a single shot - he knew Pac was liable to jump into the body jab with his chin unprotected and the right counter imo is the greatest shot ever landed in the history of fighting.

No mention of Gatti/Ward?

Gatti was better than Ward, just fought like an idiot in fight 1, he won fights 2 and 3 quite handily.

I would say Canelo vs GGG is more closely fought than any of the examples mentioned so far.

MAB vs Morales = MAB
JMM vs Pac = JMM.

Corrales vs Casamayor were evenly contested. Although I did favour Cas.

Golovkin vs Jacobs was as close as the second (and closer than the first) GGG vs Canelo fight, for me. Canelo vs Lara and Canelo vs Trout were closer too.

GGG vs Canelo 1: 117-112 GGG
GGG vs Canelo 2: 116-114 GGG (giving R12 to Canelo, which may be wrong)

GGG vs Jacobs: 115-113 GGG

Canelo vs Lara: 115-114 Canelo

Canelo vs Trout: 114-113 Canelo

Golovkin and Canelo are clearly on a similar level, and were competitive throughout, but I saw a clear winner in both fights. There were clear rounds in those fights, which judges failed to score correctly. That made it seem closer than it actually was, to me.

Most of the Pacquiao/Marquez and MAB/Marquez fights were closer, imo. At least from memory.

The legendary Thomas Stalker and Craig Evans trilogy :OhYes:

Joking aside the cards are funny to look at.

3 fights.
2 split draws.
1 MD win for Evans.
1 95-95 card in each fight.
4 cards of 96-94, 3 in favour of Evans and 1 in favour of Stalker.
So 7 of 9 cards had them either level or one round away from being level.

I thought it was probably the closest of the three in terms of rounds won.

Fight 1, Marquez won more rounds but lost because of the 3 knockdowns. Fight 2, Pac won clean. Fight 3, I've scored both ways. It probably deserved to be a draw. Not a robbery whoever you think won.

Fight 1 should have been retrospectively awarded to Pacquiao on the basis the judge who scored it a draw made a scoring error. They had round 1 a 10-7 round when it should have been 10-6. I don't know why the orgs don't go back and rectify the results when such mistakes are made.

I might go back and watch all 4 fighst again actually.

I sometimes get GGG and Canelo confused. I recently spent 20 mins arguing that GGG just about shaded both fights with Glolovkin and deserved the decision.
People just nodded
