According to Gene Tunney, Harry Greb was Jewish.

Greb can be a Jewish sir name.

"Coat of Arms & Family Crests Store Greb Coat of Arms / Greb Family Crest The surname of GREB was a German occupational name for a digger of graves or ditches, or an engraver of seals. The name was derived from the German word GRABEN, meaning to dig, to excavate. It was also an Ashkenazic Jewish occupational name for a grave-digger. "

The below books says Greb was Jewish. Others of the time, the same.

Harry Greb definitely was a Roman Catholic and donated a lot of money to his church. His father's first name was Pius, hardly a Jewish name.

Gene Tunney said that Greb was Jewish? That must be a whopper. Tunney was a pallbearer at Greb's funeral, so he undoubtedly knew better.

According to one first edition book, Greb was Jewish. However, a correction was made in a later edition of the book with the mistake being acknowledged.

There was a tale going around that Greb's last name was Berg, which is Greb spelled backwards. But that tale is completely untrue.

Interesting.

My understanding is many people who went to America changed their names and sometimes religions to fit in.

I guess the DNA hounds can tell us if Greb's ancestors summited theirs in a public forum. I suspect he was at least part Jewish.

There isn't any solid evidence that Harry Greb had Jewish ancestors. Greb's father, Pius, emigrated to the United States from Germany while his mother, also of German descent, was born in Pennsylvania.
