Never really understood the fascination with Welch - he seemed to be hyped as Geniune world class in the mid 90's more so than Williams was prior to the Klitchsko fight. Everytime I saw him he was pretty poor - but admitedly I don't think I saw him on his best nights (like the Bugner fight).
However, Welch had a bit of bottle and was very fit - he beat James Oyelabola who kind of reminds me of Skelton. Welch had a good chin, depends if he could back up Matt and keep up with his pace.
I think he would probably eek out a close decision.
Havn't really seen much of Welch. I always tought of him as a good domestic prospect rather than world class. Thats kinda how I see Skelton. I'd go with Matt just because he did so well in that war with Williams.
i remember the welch- akinwande fight in the states.
that was britains way of getting our own back for lend lease during the war.
welch looked a tough so and so though and i dont think he`d be overly phased with skeltons rough house tactics. toss of a coin job for me.
Yep. Bugner was fat & old and was never in the fight. He still was however hard frickin headed & Welch had to really nail him to roll him over.
The ref gave Bugner a 20 count & let him stagger into a barrage fo Welch punches but he couldnt knock him down again. It looked like a big strong fella working over a very tired worn out heavy bag.

Looking at his record he actually won all his subsequent fights beating some half decent names. He won the Australian Title and even one of the Mickey Mouse World Heavyweight Titles. Amazing really. Must get hold of the Bugner v Welch fight sometime. Wasn't it in Germany? Seems bizarre.
Get hold of Bugner v Bonechrusher if you want to see the most embarrasing, poor excuse for a 'heavyweight title fight' I have ever seen
Heard about it. They were both pushing 50 and Bonecrusher dislocated his shoulder and quit without either of them laying much of a glove on each other.
Bonechrusher's flabby tits were a low point in a truly afwul fight, I feel sorry for anyone who was conned into buying a ticket for that mess.

The fight happened in germany because the BBFC didnt want Bugner killed in a british ring.
The germans dont give a monkeys bout that stuff, when a 42 yr old Bonecrusher Smith failed a brain scan in the UK back in 94 for a fight with Henry Akinwande big surprise he resurfaced a few weeks later in Germany fighting Axel Schulz.
