DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
The Boxing News this week had a very illuminating feature on the new deal Canelo Alvarez and Matchroom have with the American 'streaming' company DAZN.
They claim that Alvarez will earn $365 million from 11 fights over the next 3 years. Eddie Hearn has also revealed details of how many fights he has to put on annually with DAZN and we started to see this last week in Boston.
Where is all the money coming from ? From my limited knowledge of the subject there can only be 2 sources - you and me buying into it, and advertising based on viewing figures.
Can I say I wouldn't pay anything extra to watch Alvarez fighting anyone other than Golovkin, and no harm to Mr Fielding but I certainly will not be paying PPV figures for that fight . I'm only one person but at the moment there is only one fight I'd be prepared to cough up for and thats Fury v Wilder because I'm intrigued regarding the outcome.
Apparently Alvarez can generate 1 million buys in the USA, and 2.7 million tuned in last weekend in Boston. I have to ask ,what happens if Alvarez walks onto a big right hand from Fielding and gets sparked? And where do you find worthwhile opponents, for him, when many are contracted elsewhere?
DAZN have obviously done their homework, but I for one hope the bubble bursts. All the TV companies are attempting to cash in on the PPV revolution focussed on boxing which now means that me and others can't watch the big fights unless we stump up, and as you know the prices are rising year on year. The fighters now realise how much money can be made, but where do they go after a defeat when they might still be demanding the huge purses they got previously.
There's only just over a dozen people earning millions out of the fans, I sincerely hope they are re-investing some of that cash in grassroots boxing .

DAZN are basically Perform Group. Owned by Russian billionaire Len Blavatnik. Richest man in UK. They are also allegedly about to sell part of Perform to help fund DAZN. Gone fully Balls in - spent £2.6bn on rights already.

Re: DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
Aren’t they making boxing more affordable (at the moment) for non uk based fans?
$10 a month with the first month free so $110 for the year. Isn’t a PPV fight in the USA $80 so two Canelo fights a year is $160 so Canelo fans are saving money and getting all the other boxing cards they put on worldwide.
If I could get sky boxing plus all the DANZ cards for £10 a month I’d pay it like I did allegedly.
That said if they do achieve dominance then I can’t see the subscription staying at $10. Why would it when people have and continue to fork out $80 for a PPV fight. Market forces and lack of competition will drive it up.

Not sure they will ever achieve full dominance, espn+ offers a similar service for a smaller price and PBC have recently signed a massive deal with fox sports.dave_smith wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 07:56 Aren’t they making boxing more affordable (at the moment) for non uk based fans?

But DAZN do offer a very good deal for $10 a month, much better than we get in this country.
Re: DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
2.7m tuned in for the Boston card?!?! That can't be right surely sounds massive compared to numbers I've seen for previous non ppv American cards.
As for DAZN surely we as boxing fans want things like this to succeed? On the current strength of it looks a good thing for boxing fans in the states and the more big fighters that sign for it I guess is good news for boxing fans who have sky here.

I thought PBC were struggling. Wasn’t Haymon getting sued by the pension funds he got the money from as he spent it all with little or no return?keirw wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 08:44Not sure they will ever achieve full dominance, espn+ offers a similar service for a smaller price and PBC have recently signed a massive deal with fox sports.dave_smith wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 07:56 Aren’t they making boxing more affordable (at the moment) for non uk based fans?

Haymon seems to always be getting sued by someone.dave_smith wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 09:18I thought PBC were struggling. All I know is that PBC recently signed a 9 figure deal to show fights on Fox sports for the next few years.

Re: DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
You could just subscribe for the 2 months Canelo fights?
Would be $9.99 as the first month would be free. Just subscribe when there’s a good fight on or when a month has back to back good cards. No one says you have to be sub’d for the whole year. But then again 9.99 isn’t much. Surely some people won’t even notice it coming out of their accounts.

I only had HBO for boxing. Now that they are out of boxing business I got DAZN.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑27 Oct 2018, 11:42 You could just subscribe for the 2 months Canelo fights?

HBO was 15 bucks a month. I'm saving 5 bucks and I'm getting more boxing.
It's the best deal for a fan

I wonder how that deal is going to look if he happens to lose a few. I guess they aren’t going to match him too hard.

Re: DAZN deal with Alvarez etc
Two things to bear in mind DAZN are in multiple territories. So they can afford to pay big money for fights based worldwide subscriptions. Canelo sells 1.2m PPV at $80. They have reduced the price for his fights to $9.99. Effectively if he sells 1m Subscriptions in US alone which is minimal they will double their investment in him. 1m x 9.99 x 12 months (as these models rarely have people cancel subscriptions once they join) is $120m and they are paying Canelo $73m a year. Just shows the profit the tv companies were making on PPV.
