I'm in love with both ESPN + & DAZN.

Post by sweetviolenturge »

How can any self-respecting combat sports enthusiast not be?
I've spent decades dreaming about the sort of access that these two apps provide us with to boxing. Until the advent of these apps, it could often be maddening to miss fights that took place overseas. It was especially frustrating trying to follow the inaugural season of the WBSS earlier this year.
Sure, I was able to catch a few of the fights in the tournament via illegal streams but the picture quality was mediocre at best & I had to put up with constant buffering & occasional sudden blackouts. Now, with DAZN & ESPN + I no longer have to worry about such things. Each time that I've used them the picture quality has been in brilliant HD & I've had no issues at all with buffering.
I've heard some complaints from some subscribers about not being able to watch the fights on their televisions but that hasn't been an issue with me as I have a Samsung smart TV that supports the DAZN download. As for ESPN +, I run it through my Amazon Firestick. The setups are quite fast & simple.
Along with being a rabid boxing fan, I'm also a diehard MMA fan which both apps address. DAZN by carrying Bellator events & ESPN + by their contract to begin carrying UFC events beginning in January.
As for the cost, both of them combined are less than $15 per month. Which, as it turns out, isn't even going to be an extra cost for long because I plan on ceasing my HBO subscription ( which costs $15 per mo. ) as soon as they stop broadcasting boxing in January. So, it all works out quite nicely in the end as far as I'm concerned.

DAZN is spectacular. ESPN+ less so. Less user friendly and less quality fights.

Where do DAZN get their money. They've invested heavily already. Hope it doesn't all go tits up but that's the worry.

Yeah, I guess I do. :D
But, a lot of individuals that I've come across here & elsewhere still seem confused about the apps. So, I thought I'd try to be as informative as possible. And, yes, I'm very enthusiastic about both of them. As I said, I spent a number of years before the advent of these apps using various means to access streams & for the most part it sucked. And, now that I have the means to follow my favorite sports in glorious HD I'm thrilled about it.

Back in the day i used too download most of the stuff. I always said that when the price is right i am willing to pay.

Right now i have Netflix for the movies, Spotify for the music and i am now in love with DAZN & ESPN+. This is just a new era, the streaming era. And i love it. The montly subscription gives the fan so much great content for a lower price. This is way better then a 75 dollar pay per view!

What about cable? Do you have access to ESPN & FS1? What about Showtime & HBO ( which, of course, will no longer be necessary come January )?
I don't mean to pry, I'm just curious. Because I'm the sort of nut that needs access to it all & I like to gauge whether other fans are more like me or less. Peace.

TBH. Having DAZN and ESPN+ is just $15 a month. ESPN+ picks up a lot of other boxing, from the UK too. They’ve picked up Hughie Fury vs. Pulev.

Also Alvarado’s fight.

Agree. I got both & I'm going to keep both, but I prefer the subscriber/viewer friendliness of DAZN better.

ESPN+ is too cluttered with other bs & I'm not sure there is even a way to customize it to boxing (& MMA when the UFC arrives). I have zero interest in any non-combat sport so all that "regular" sport shit is just in my way.

As far as the rosters & quality of the fights I think I like ESPN+ more, Crawford, Lomachenko & better matchups thus far anyway, with what TR has been putting together, but with the moves DAZN are making I think they will have a higher quality roster & product in the very near future. And the WBSS tournament there is high quality now we just haven't gotten to the more interesting part of that yet.

They seem to have deep pockets. They are in 7(?) countries already & are scheduled to be in 20 countries by 2022. This is a long game for them & its beyond boxing to. They are a sports platform not just a boxing platform despite it looking mostly like a boxing platform in the US right now.

I dunno, there hasn't been anything particularly compelling (boxing-wise) on ESPN+ in the last few months, whereas DAZN has had big fights on almost every weekend since AJ/Povetkin.

ESPN + has a perfect example of why I love these apps on tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM est. in the Pulev vs Fury fight. It's the sort of European match-up that we here in the States would never have had the opportunity to see in the past. Years ago we've have had to have been content to read about it in the boxing magazines of the day & more recently, we'd have watched it on Youtube after already knowing the result. Now, we get to watch it live.

Is DAZN just "Matchroom USA" and "Golden Boy Promotions" cards?

I'm not much of a MMA fan. Is there enough boxing to make it worth it for me?

Good question. I don't think so. The boxing they have shown has been very well delivered, but they are not showing fights I want to see, like for instance Pulev vs H Fury tomorrow, and they have a lot of time fillers that are of no interest to me.

They got the WBSS tournament fights too.

I think all told they will have 60+ cards per year.

I feel like its worth it, but thats for everyone to decide for themselves. If you like Matchroom's roster, GBP's roster & the WBSS backets its up your alley. If you don't its probably not.

WBSS is worth the price of admission on its own. They're the types of high-level matchups that used to rarely get made and that any boxing fan should salivate over. Even the quarterfinals are great.

Hopefully DAZN effectively spells the end of PPV boxing. Who the hell wants to spend $70 on one fight when $10/mo gets you a slew of awesome matchups. It totally changes the value proposition.

ESPN+ today for the Fury fight sucked. Instead of showing the corners in between rounds, they had the same god damn commercial with the same stupid god damn song that I’ve been singing all day and can’t get out of my head.

Nah, I’m not a cheap fuuck like most of you all happy about the money that your saving. I have a job and don’t mind paying money to see a quality feed and production. They claim to be HD but it’s not even close. I already miss HBO.

Every corner break? Unless anything significant happens in the first few rounds. I know broadcasters in UK, Channel 5, Sky Sports and BT usually show ads. Until the half way point. They start showing corner work.

ESPN+ is really not great. It's cheaper, so that's nice. But the fact that they put commercials in a pay service is BS. And the site is less well organized, I've noticed that sometimes replays aren't available for some time after the fight is over, or that they've been edited to remove undercard bouts.
