Boxing may be removed as an Olympic sport in 2020

The IOC is seriously considering removing boxing as an Olympic sport in 2020 for a multitude of reasons. One of the biggest drivers of this decision is because AIBA is now run by Gafur Rakhimov who is a known heroin drug lord. USA Boxing is trying to keep this quiet because as one spokesperson for USAB replied, "We don't care where we get the money as long as we get it."

The only thing I can say to this is if Boxing is removed from the Olympics the Olympics will no longer mean a damn thing to me.

I sincerely hope that's not the case. Because being an Olympian does a lot for the careers of young Prospects.

It's 50/50 and depends on who's leading AIBA in 2 months time.

Removal of two men's weight categories in favour of more female representation shows their lack of desire to maintain the status quo. With other niche sports capturing far greater audiences and global appeal something will eventually give way.

I love the olympics, and like olympic boxing. but if it were to disappear it wouldn't be all bad. amatures would still box world champs. but less people would stay in the amatures too long in countries where theres lots of pressure to do so such as cuba and Ukraine.

one weird thing i find with the Olympics is that its not actually the best boxers in the world (for the most part). and for that reason it will be held back just like Olympic soccer or other sports that have remained amature only or age limmited.

Oh well.... more than half the time I can never find the stuff on television when the Olympics does roll around anyways.... "Channel 2 has swimming", "Channel 3 has running", "Channel 45 has rowing", "Channel 200 has gymnastics", etc etc etc.... So what's the loss?

Will have to agree with homicide for once. I can never find boxing when the Olympics is on. It used to be right up there with Track, Swimming, and Gymnastics.

OLYMPIC BOXING GIVEN A POTENTIAL DEATH SENTENCE

Boxing family-

Things just took a very drastic turn for the worse in amateur boxing. It’s almost guaranteed now boxing will be removed from the Olympics in 2020 by the IOC because Rakhimov, an alleged heroin drug lord, was voted in as the permanent President of AIBA this morning. The USOC will then dismiss USA Boxing as the national governing body because the Ted Stevens Act will no longer be applicable without boxing in the Olympics

John Brown has USA Boxing in too deep with Rakhimov by doing business with him in this boxing equipment company.

Additionally, USA Boxing’s treasurer, Brian Lawrence resigned after disputes with John Brown over his overspending on the boxing equipment company he’s starting in Kansas. Wait! Isn’t that where Ringside/Combat Brands and Title reside. Yep! This is also the same Brian Lawrence who USA Boxing made you put on your LBC’s bank accounts which he’s probably still on considering the National Office hasn’t informed us he resigned several months ago. Now you know.

Lastly, D.J. Walton, the Vice President of USA Boxing was forced to resign. D.J. Is a really good guy who was given an ultimatum to either resign or be voted out due to a conflict of interest because he owns his own boxing equipment company. That’s the pot calling the kettle black. The USAB board has been running for months without a VP. What?!?

USA Boxing’s lack of transparency, double standards, questionable ethics, financial mismanagement, and shady business dealings are destroying amateur boxing.

Latest story from inside Olympic circles is that the International Olympic Committee will suspend AIBA by the end of this month. The plan will be either to run a scaled down Olympic tournament themselves (possibly reaching out to one of the pro governing bodies to help them) or hope that a replacement governing body for AIBA can be set up before Tokyo 2020.
There's a rumour of the Klitschko brothers coming in as figureheads for this new organization.

Bottom line is the odds are in favour of there being boxing at the 2020 Olympics but if they can't get themselves together boxing will be dropped for the 2024 and 2028 Games.

The IOC has decided to "freeze the planning for the Olympic boxing tournament at Tokyo 2020, including official contact between AIBA and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, ticket sales, approval and implementation of a qualification system, test event planning and finalisation of the competition schedule"
