1959 or 1960.
Did Cassius Clay graduate from high school in 1959 or 1960? In the scheme of things, it is not too important, but I was just wondering. Anyone know for sure?
Re: 1959 or 1960.
I guess it was 1960. I thought he might have already graduated before 1960 because he seemed to do a lot of boxing that year. Also, his birthday was in January, and probably being big for his age, may have started a year earlier.
But, as said before, in the big scheme of things, not very important.

Re: 1959 or 1960.
Now I don't know what to think. I just read someplace that Cassius Clay was in the class of 1958 at Louisville Central High School. This would mean that Clay was 16 years old when he graduated from high school.
In a way it makes a certain kind of sense. Clay did step up his boxing in 1959 competing in just about every kind of amateur boxing tournament available (Golden Gloves, Pan-American Games, National AAU, etc.), and he did win the National AAU Light Heavyweight Championship that year.
I guess that it could have been done. If he started a year earlier (January birth date) and with some summer school courses in high school, he could have knocked a couple of years off.
Anyone know anything about this?

Muhammad Ali attended Central High School in Louisville, Ky. A D student, Ali graduated 376th out of a class of 391 in 1960, the same year he won the light-heavyweight boxing gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. He did not go to college.

Like so many other things in prize fighting you can find several different dates for graduation. This one that makes sense, the 1958 date does not, but who really knows. I also found the 1958 date but that makes no sense, especially when it suggested that he had to repeat 10th grade.

Thank you APerno, and I agree, 1960 makes the most sense.
Thanks again.
