"Kell Brook next opponent announced"

Kell Brook ticks over while hoping for a shot at Amir Khan...

KELL BROOK returns to the ring in front of his hometown fans at Sheffield Arena on December 8 when he takes on Michael Zerafa, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

‘The Special One’ was last in action in March when he swept away Sergey Rabchenko inside two rounds at Sheffield Arena to claim the WBC Silver super-welterweight title.

Former welterweight champion Brook is preparing to bring his weight down to 147lbs and must get past Australia’s Zefara in style if he is to secure a long-awaited British battle with former two-weight world champion Amir Khan in 2019.

With Dominic Ingle unable to be in his corner for this fight due to other commitments, Brook is currently training in Fuerteventura with ex-boxer and friend John Fewkes ahead of his big return.

Zerafa, 26, is a former Commonwealth super-welterweight Champion and has secured 14 of his 25 wins via knockout. He has lost just two of his 27 professional fights and insists he will thrive off the underdog status on December 8.

“I’m delighted to be back at Sheffield Arena in front of my people,” said Brook. “The Special One is back and all of my focus and attention is on getting myself ready to put on a spectacular performance for my loyal fans.

“I want to close the year in special fashion and set up some blockbuster fights in 2019 – I was ringside for Amir Khan’s last fight, so let’s see if he’ll be there on December 8, or will he be too shook for Brook?

“This is the biggest opportunity of Zerafa’s career and he will be coming over here to take my scalp but there’s levels in this game and I need to put him away to get the big fights that I desire.

“Meticulous work, dedication, preparation and focus has gone into this camp and I will continue to grin until fight week. I can’t wait to see you all at Sheffield Arena on December 8 where I will shine bright under all of the lights!”

“I thrive from being the underdog and I believe that Kell Brook’s team have made the mistake of overlooking me” said Zerafa. “I’m a completely different fighter to the man that lost to Peter Quillin and on December 8 I will prove that.

“I’ve already dreamt of beating Kell and replayed the fight over and over in my head. I was born for greatness and December 8 is the beginning of my rise to the top of the sport.

“Kell is a true warrior and a great champion but he’s been in some tough fights and put a lot of miles on the clock. I see a ship with a lot of holes and too many holes leads to a sunken ship.

“He’s been in there with the best, but I believe I belong in the same ring as those fighters. On December 8 there will be a huge upset and I will make a lot of people eat their words.”

Unbeaten Irish star Jono Carroll faces French former European champion Guillaume Frenois in a final eliminator to become mandatory challenger to IBF super-featherweight champion Tevin Farmer.

Sunderland welterweight talent Josh ‘Pretty Boy’ Kelly, hugely popular Yorkshire heavyweight Dave ‘White Rhino’ Allen and Cork Middleweight Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan all feature on a huge card.

“I’m delighted to see Kell back in the ring and I expect Zerafa to give it everything on December 8,” said Eddie Hearn. “We know that the Khan fight is on the horizon but this is all part of Kell’s preparation for being razor sharp and bringing his weight down to 147lbs – Zerafa aims to spoil the party.

“It’s a huge card with a brilliant final eliminator between Jono Carroll and Guillaume Frenois to become mandatory to the in form Tevin Farmer with Josh Kelly, Dave Allen and Spike O’Sullivan also in action. Kell is looking sensational in camp in Fuertaventura and I expect an electric performance in his home town on December 8.”

By the time Kell Brook steps foot inside the ring against Australia's Michael Zerafa, it would have been almost four and a half years since the Brit last defeated a world-rated opponent, which was when he originally captured the IBF 147lbs crown from Shawn Porter, in a bout the UK boxing TV pundits from both Sky and Box-Nation thought he deserved to lose.

Kell Brook has only won one fight in far more than 2½ years, against the lightly-regarded Siarhei Rabchanka, and he is being pitted against another substandard opponent in December.

To be honest, has Kell Brook ever scored a clear-cut decisive victory over any universally-recognised top-ten world class opponent? Please name one, because I can’t think of any!

Even though Zerafa is rated 14th at 154lbs by the WBA, the Australian hasn’t beaten anyone of any note. He shouldn’t be considered world-class, which means a victory for the self-titled ‘Special One’ will not reward the Brit with any sort of credibility whatsoever.

Perhaps I’m being overly-critical, but I am really disappointed by Brook’s choice of opponent for December.

I really do hope that Eddie Hearn puts on a particularly stacked undercard, because the main event fight between Brook and Zerafa is pretty dire!

He's one of them 'What could have been?'

He's had a very frustrating career. Why does he need warm-ups? Every fight is a warm-up for him.

It was also the British judge who scored it a draw against Porter.

How is Zerafa involved in an eliminator when he's ranked 14th??

Last week, Michael Zerafa was rated 14th by the WBA and he’s suddenly been elevated to 8th position in their rankings.

Eddie Hearn admitted to iFLT TV last week that he knew who Brook’s next opponent was and I suspect the WBA were notified in advance also, hence the reason for Zerafa’s sudden and undeserved ratings jump! I suspect that Matchroom delayed the announcement of Kell’s next fight until the WBA had updated their rankings.

We’ve seen this before with the WBO, when Sergey Kovalev faced two unranked 175lb-ers who suddenly became top-ten world-rated light heavyweights shortly after Main Events had signed those bouts.

Kell Brook seems to be biding his time facing journeymen prior to cashing out and retiring immediately after facing Amir Khan.

The fight has expired. I actually hope he doesn't get this payday.. He might be stopping opponents, but he's lost not had a significant win since 2014.

He's supposed to be 'elite'..

While Brook has not had a significant win since 2014, he certainly challenged himself over the last couple of years, albeit failing. I don’t blame him for taking a lesser fight or two given the health issues he has been through.

If he gets a big fight next year, Khan or not, it will be satisfactory..

Is it unreasonable to suggest, in the context of the type of opponents he’s faced over the last four years, that Kell Brook is only willing to take risks and engage in bouts against dangerous opposition as long as he receives a minimum payday of $4m? Otherwise, he’ll try to stay busy by facing journeymen or highly-vulnerable fringe contenders.

Whilst I appreciate the simple fact that boxers are known as “PRIZE fighters”, instead of being “PRIDE fighters”, he can’t continue dining out on the controversial decision victory he gained when he beat Shawn Porter four and a half years ago.

Simply put: Kell Brook has never scored a clear-cut decisive victory over any universally-recognised top-ten world class opponent. And he doesn’t deserve to retain his status of being considered an elite fighter on the back of victories over easily beatable opponents like: Dan; Gavin; Bizier; Rabchanka; and Zerafa.

Kell Brook has certainly faced his fair share of challenges. The Khan fight next year would be a great way for him to go out. First let's see what he has left at 147lbs. A good win might open more doors than just Amir Khan's.

Khan knew what he had to offer on the big stage so while he won his first world title, Brook became British champion.

Brook’s career is surely a ‘what could have been?’

I always said I wonder what would have happened had he fought Vargas in the unification fight. But then Brexit happened.

There is really no other big fight out there or he would have taken it. Khan fight makes him big retirement money. Even a PPV with someone won’t.

His fight with Spence did around 200k to 300k UK PPV buys. He got paid what £3m for it. Not bad money tbh. Made around the same against GGG.

Who else can he fight which will make him that kinda money again? He would have to regain a world title. Even then it’s a question mark.

Even Hearn can’t get him a world title fight in the US. The only option is Jaime Munguia as he will be on DAZN now. The rest are glued to Showtime. Hearn hasn’t any light middleweight beltholder.
