I do think that the honest mistake by the ref in calling a round early, may well have led to a dynamic that would have been interesting to have witnessed. That of Joe truly being stunned and allowing Ali to see what he could have done with the follow up.

Hey it might have worked out good for Joe, had he felt in trouble and pulled some desperate shots that could have changed things. For the most part the allowance of that moment to continue as it played out, would probably have significantly favored Ali' vs Joe. But that's a pretty critical time to have unfortunately and mistakenly intervened.

I agree that it was probably an honest mistake by the referee.
Also don't think Ali would have put away Frazier anyway.
Also think that if the situation is reversed, you would constantly hear how Frazier got ripped off.
Yet when Ali once again got the short end of the stick, it gets very little attention.
The fight itself was obviously not as exciting as the third one, but still is fun to watch.
