WBA Opens Office in Switzerland, To Work Closely With IOC

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The president of the World Boxing Association (WBA), Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, issued a second letter that delves into the plan presented last June called “The Return of Boxing”, which seeks to rescue the discipline of pugilism and return it to the highest sport in the world.

In recent times boxing is threatened in the international scope due to problems of leadership. The idea of the WBA is that boxing is united and the entity reiterates that it is a professional and amateur organization.

Seven fundamental points already known make up the document sent in June and these were signed by President Mendoza and the former fighter and world figure Wladimir Klitschko. The fundamental idea is to give much more value to the athletes and the WBA wants to strengthen the programs in which it has been working for a long time and that have to do with the education, health, and retirement of the athletes. In addition to those; the training and safety of the judges, referees, and all the personnel that make the development of boxing possible.

Mendoza was pleased by the support of several national federations and different entities after having known the plan. The values of universality, diversity, respect, and commitment have been highlighted.

The WBA will put all its research efforts and intellectual property and centralize them in the WBA Academy, which will be an important point in the development of the plan. Another key aspect will be technology and the WBA wants to take advantage of all its digital platforms so that the fan is aware of the work that is being done in favor of boxing, as well as creating new tools and applications that serve that purpose.

It was also announced that the WBA has created a new office in Lausanne, Switzerland, with which the WBA is located at the epicenter of all governing bodies of sport in the world. The WBA will work with the International Olympic Committee, with which it will share knowledge and collaborate to solve the current problems of the sport.

Boxing is going through a complicated moment but it needs union and a collective agreement to get out of the problem. The WBA is committed to lead and do what is necessary for the sport of pugilism to reach the top again.

This is very interesting. It sounds like the WBA is trying to muscle AIBA out who is also located in Lausanne. AIBA also has an Academy located in Kazakhstan. They want to copy AIBA and maybe do what the previous AIBA President tried to do with adding pros to the Olympics and the WSB and the AIBA pro boxing tournament that never really took off so they could get first dibs on signing them.
The problem is the WBA and all of the other ABC's are a joke and their greed has ruined pro boxing in many ways. AIBA has a criminal in charge who can't travel to many countries like USA because he is wanted by Interpol supposedly. All boxing organizations are full of shysters.

With WBA being the most corrupt sanctioning body in pro boxing, I am not sure that they can succeed with IOC.

If WBA wants to save boxing they can start with crowning only one champ per division. Then they can support unification matches and work together with the other organizations. That will never happen of course.

It's about time the WBA got involved.
Boxing fans have waited far too long for a Super Olympic Gold Medal, Regular Olympic Gold Medal and Interim Olympic Gold Medal.

WBA poised to help with 2020 Olympic Boxing

On Thursday, the WBA laid out its case:
WBA Supports Olympic Boxing

Boxing is one sport. Both in its professional and Olympic discipline. That is why the World Boxing Association (WBA) never opposed the participation of professional boxers in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. However, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) questioned the participation of the Fistiana Art for Tokyo 2020, the WBA launched its support for the IOC in its quest to protect athletes.

Thus was born in June 2018 “The Return of Boxing,” the WBA program that was supported by Wladimir Klitschko, Olympic and world heavyweight champion, as well as an ambassador of the oldest body organization governing universal pugilism.

The plan developed by the organization is based on seven points:

1. Strengthen our values: Participative writing of the Universal Charter of Boxing, together with athletes, officials, federations and fans from all around the world in order to underline our values of universality, diversity, respect, engagement and education.

2. Athlete’s welfare: Provide educational tools, and health/life insurance so the athletes are able to fully focus on their careers, and later enjoy a sustainable future after retirement.

3. Simplify the structures: Offer a unique regulator, and an ultimate authority. There’s a need to simplify with less bureaucracy, leveraging digital technologies to improve transparency, collaboration and efficiency.

4. Professionalize the officials and trainers: Let’s take care of those who care for the champions, give them scalable salaries, further their education and even develop a pension system.

5. Fans Empowerment: Turn them into real participants of the boxing world, share the passion and information but also strengthen the objectivity of decisions.

6. Digitalize the experience: Enable deeper insights, share exciting information and possibilities through a customized application.

7. Optimize the reach: Create one worldwide “pro/am” broadcasting channel, defined by regions, including subscriptions/PPV, OTT streaming facilities and its own production unit.

The manifesto, signed by Mendoza and Klitschko, was sent to all those interested in the welfare of boxing and received a great reception within several National Federations that affiliated to the WBA.

However, not everything was words. The WBA held amateur tournaments and, through its academy, instructed boxing judges and referees. Returning to what it did in Venezuela since 1990 with its KO Drugs Campaign that led several athletes to stardom, as it was the case of Jorge Linares. Furthermore, it is worth saying the WBA was the first organization to reach out to AIBA, before the controversy broke out, to advise them regarding professional boxing and to cooperate for the inclusion of professional athletes in amateur boxing.

On November 27, 2018, the WBA issued a new statement, also signed by Klitschko, in which they requested the IOC to recognize the WBA to be part of the Olympic movement to help athletes work for their dreams.

This request was ratified by the WBA on May 23, when it was announced that AIBA would not be part of the Olympic Committee, and offered all its experience to organize boxing for Tokyo 2020.
