KO magazine just came out with a "Top 20 British fighters" article. The author puts Lennox Lewis at number 1. Yup, you heard me right....numero uno. Over Jimmy Wilde, Jim Driscoll, Benny Lynch, Freddie Welsh...all of 'em.
Wonder what the response of the posters here would be to the writer of that article. Do you agree? Disagree?
(BTW...Fitzsimmons didn't make the cut because he never spent any significant time in Britain).
KO's top British Boxers
Sad isn't it...
What can you say, your up against an age old "ACHIEVMENTS" first fallacy... however at one time achievments had more credibilty than in recent years, that's for sure,
But, at NO time does it "ever literally" mean the best, alot of great fighters willand do get overlooked because they never held a world title and likewise many of the modern day title "holders" will find themselves in ahead of these forgotten/by-passed greats.
Fitz isn't English as far as fighting credibility goes, New Zealand & Australia deserve credit for him, but its funny how for years he was a British 'boast' but now with Or' Lennox he is not needed...
Lewis IS NOT no.1 he's not even in it when compared to the "rightful" achievment champions & contenders,
but Every Nation needs it's boasts, to give the good ol' U.S. of A a run for their money, but in thier Desperation they Exclude great fighters in place of title holders "worthy" or not and in many cases NOT!
Sad.

Such remarks are likely cause a melee of mixed up, nationalistic-hurt-pride-eye-for-an-eye etc.
The Good 'Ol US of A......hmmmmm. Home of the greatest boxer ever born, no doubt.
But lets not forget, he became what he became DESPITE the 'Good 'Ol US of A' (you can say the same for any black american fighter up to the '80s). And if he was around today, he would probably be rotting away in Guantanamo bay.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I will add my voice to what will no doubt be a veritable chorus of dissaproval over KO's ranking of Lewis as number 1 brit (I assume it's Lennox, not Ted Kid?).
He certainly deserves a top 5 place, but I would put Wilde, Driscoll, Lynch and Fitzimmons ahead.
