WBSS Cruiserweight (1/4 Final): Mairis Briedis vs. Noel Mikaelian - November 10, 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Season I star Mairis Briedis vs. Noel Mikaelian and Krzysztof Glowacki vs. Maksim Vlasov are the two Quarter-Finals on an incredible doubleheader when the World Boxing Super Series comes to the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, USA.

“I am really looking forward to fighting in Chicago,” said Briedis (24-1, 18 KOs). The Latvian hero is undoubtedly one of the favourites to take home Season II’s Ali Trophy in the 200-lb division.

“I am happy to be back in the World Boxing Super Series, and I am looking forward to fighting in front of a U.S. crowd. I am sure there will also be a lot of Latvians in the arena to help create a fantastic atmosphere.”

Briedis’ opponent, Germany’s Noel Mikaelian (23-1, 10 KOs), is eager to perform on the biggest stage - only a split decision defeat, in an IBF eliminator against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, prevented him of participating in Season I.

“There are only world class fighters in this tournament, but I believe my ring IQ will give me the edge to win it,” said Mikaelian.

Tickets will be available to buy via TicketMaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000 on Monday 1 October. Fans can be alerted by email when tickets go on sale by signing up for Ticket Alerts here.

Very wide decision or late stoppage for Briedis. Gevor is a lazy fighter, throws few punches, he has some good technical skills but no power. Briedis is a favourite of the whole tournament but it's closer than some people think. Dorticos is the strongest puncher here and he can ko everyone, Glowacki is unpredictable but we know of what he is capable of, Vlasov very solid and tall, throws a lot but he have never face any top 15 CW so far. Durodola, Sillakh and Chakhkiev are good wins but level below Glowacki who he faces next, Masternak very experienced, lost only to top fighters (Kalenga, Drozd, Bellew) in very competetive close bouts, he seems to be in his prime now, he has almost 50 bouts but he's still only 30 yo, Tabiti is one of the top prospects in the CW division, he can be the dark horse of this tournament, i can't say much about Fayfer but from what i have seen i think it gonna be quite easy job for Andrew.

It’s just another ‘prize’.. Briedis was probably their highest ranked.

Why not Breidis vs. Goulamirian/Leren/Papin/Bejenaru. Gevor sounds like a bad fight.

Season 2 sucks by the way. They didn't get any of the dudes I've listed. Only Tabiti and Valsov seem like a new real threat. Dorticos and Glowacki failed miserably. Fayfer, Masternak, and Gevor shouldn't have been included.

Seems like Breidis will sweep the tournament. I'd be surprised if he doesn't.

Lerena is just caught juicing and he is known for receiving bad decisions like vs Kalenga
Goulamirian maybe Papin too (but he had like 9 fights and just doubt that he would want to participate in this) would be a better choice than Mikaelian or Fayfer but to be fair, Mikaelian is not that bad, not great but at least much better than Fayfer, i rank him as #14 CW. i think that he will last to the final bell vs Briedis and will lose 118-110 type of decision, maybe he will be knocked down once. at least he is better than Fayfer. Tabiti didn't impress me so far, neither in Cunningham nor Fayfer fight. the Tabiti vs Fayfer was terrible btw. Dorticos will knock him out, maybe im wrong but thats my prediction.

Masternak arguably beats all of the fighters you mentioned above and he was competetive vs Dorticos (of course he clearly lost but he did well) i wouldn't be surprised if he beats Tabiti or even Vlasov. maybe even Glowacki. Masternak was 41-4 (in fact 42-3 because the Muller terrible robbery should be counted as Masternak win, even Muller's coach and promoters have admitted afterwards that Masternak was the better fighter lol) and lost only to Drozd (arguably the best CW at this time) Kalenga (could go either way, it was a prime Kalenga that was Lebedev down and was very game vs him) and Bellew (115-113). Masternak just before fighting Dorticos made Kalenga quit after 5 rounds and he arguably won every round, he was dominant. in his resume he also have past prime but still good Mormeck, Sillakh and then undefeated Janik. What better Goulamirian, juicer and robbery decisions beneficiary Lerena or Bejenaru? Masternak's dominant win over Kalenga is better than all what Vlasov did so far.

if Vlasov loses to Glowacki i would love to see the fight Vlasov vs Masternak fight, they're both very experienced and skilled.

This season is not perfect but it's still good. Usyk and Gassiev couldn't participate but we still have some top guys. my perfect WBSS (without Usyk, Gassiev and Bellew) would look like this:
Briedis vs Goulamirian
Dorticos vs Tabiti
Lebedev vs Masternak
Glowacki vs Vlasov
or without Lebedev version:
Briedis vs Makabu
Dorticos vs Tabiti
Glowacki vs Goulamirian
Vlasov vs Masternak

yeah Goulamirian should be included but Lerena is a juicer (recently caught) and robbery decisions beneficiary (in fact he lost to Kalenga and i haven't seen the Lerena-Nielsen but i wouldn't be surprised if it was a robbery as well)

He already lost wide to Usyk. It was completely non-competitive. I like Glowacki, but he is never coming close to beating Usyk. I'd have liked to see the tournament include guys that are question marks.

I didn't know Lerena was caught juicing. I missed his fight with Kalenga, but I did see his fight with Kucher. That's why I thought he'd be a good add.

Masternak is not that good, and I know about the Mueller fight. It was a complete robbery. I wasn't at all talking about that. Absolutely no way does Masternak beat the guys I've mentioned. He probably beats Lerena, but I think even Egorov with 6 fights can beat Masternak.

We already know his level, and he's below elite. Bellew and Dorticos both beat him clear (Bellew close), and I wouldn't consider Dorticos the top, elite of the division either. I'd struggle to say that Bellew would be able to beat Gassiev or Briedis; therefore, I'd also hesitate to say Bellew is the top elite too.

I mean this tournament is clearly Briedis' to take. They should've added Papin and some of the others I've mentioned that have been making noise in the division. Then I'd have to scratch my head as to who will take the tournament. This season is okay is all.

Vlasov has been beating and looking good against some good names in the division. We don't really know his level as he's only lost against Ramirez ages ago now. I'd be surprised if Vlasov loses to Glowacki, nevermind Masternak.

Cruiser WBSS fights should be held in Europe. Briedis-Mikaelian would fill 10-15k arena in Riga easily, same Glowacki-Vlasov in Poland/Russia. and there, in Chicago, how many people is there, 2-3k? and most of them are Glowacki's fans i guess.

i have scored 115-111 Briedis. Briedis drops from #3 to #4 in my cruiserweight rank. i predicted that i will last the distance and it did. ugly fight, but now it's time for real war! :bag:
