Bomber1 (Tony Bellew)

He boxed out of skin last night for the first few rounds, unfortunately at too high a pace to keep it up for more then 5 or 6. He lost to a (probably) future hall of famer last night and did himself proud.

I like him at the end of the day, heart on his sleeve kind of bloke, wouldn't want to be trapped with him in a lift or at a party for too long, but a good hearted bloke and a good boxer who in the end managed to transcend most people's expectations of him.

I never encountered him on here, but he seems a reasonable enough guy (as long as he’s not talking about himself). He’s certainly made the most of his ability, so good luck to him.

Glad he got exposed so badly last night, albeit by a top level fighter.

Tony was a fringe level world cruiserweight, with an elite character that made him a lot of money, and a lot of money more than other much more talented British peers than him.

Anyone who think a few million ‘sets your children’ up for life needs to re-read a few football and boxing autobiographies to see how that can often play out,

I’m glad Tony is off the scene now, Hope he is ok though, his post fight repetition of sentences was tough to watch.

On a side note, Smith and Froch did an embarrassing job last night.

I think Bellew had an awesome and amazing carreer and I'm happy he finished it like this. Beïng very very competative against an absolute pound for pound legend in his own weightclass.

I thought it would be unbearable if he'd somehow pulled it off last night but now I feel a little bit sad that its all over for him, like him or loathe him he made people talk about the sport.

Yeah id agree with that. When he's talking normally he seems a decent enough guy. He knows how to sell a fight. Talent alone wouldn't have earned him the money he has so all the bravado has worked wonders for him. Fair play.

Hope he enjoys his retirement and doesn't become another Sky cheerleader.

Usyk will go on to greatness I feel, and you gave him his hardest night to date, outboxing him for a large portion of the fight. Your a realist, you know the score, you gained Usyk’s respect tonight.

Anyway, enough of my pointless waffling. Huge respect from me, and hopefully many others on here. Enjoy ‘retirement’., and stay busy on Sky, where it seems you’ve found a home post retirement.

Dya know what mate i felt the same,iv had abit of a disagreement on here with bomber1 before he beat chilemba and abit previous to that but i said the same thing to anyone who got in my taxi over the past 2 years,tony love him or hate him has done things in boxing that even he didnt think he woukd achieve,i am silently proud as a fan of the sport of boxing and as a guy who has exchanged words on here with him ,to see what he has done and im happy for him,his wife and his family. Tony believed he coukd beat anyone he got in the ring with,he had a style of fighting that to a boxing fan looked basic but he could find his range pretty good and (even though we take the piss) has tremendous power that onky a few elite fighters could take and still carry on fighting.

Well done Bomber1 i hope you live your life with fulfilment and not regret now go and take a holiday and maybe pass on your knowledge to an up and comer

Bellew was very much an active, & entertaining part of this forum at one point. There is no harm in the posters who remember those days dropping a respectful word or two on his retirement from the game.

Just from a boxing perspective he’s over-rated completely.
Heard a lot of the worlds like legend or a great last night.
The reality is his best win was Makabu. British cruisers. He’s behind Haye, Nelson and Thompson. Maybe even Enzo.

But there hasn’t been a modern day fighter who’s over-achieved financially and fame wise like Bellew.
He’s done well for himself.

Maybe you need to change the thread title then to praising Bellend or something similar. Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to guess that a thread called Bomber1 (Tony Bellew) is going to get a lot of divided opinions.

I never took to Bellew mostly centred on his antics in that press conference with Cleverleh (think that’s where he learned that this is what sells to casuals so kept doing it), his antics on here over Warmachine and then the Stevenson fight. After that I never really tuned in to his fights apart from Haye and last night.

However credit where credits due. He’s vastly over achieved and made a decent wedge for him and his family and i have to give credit to someone doing this with the skill set he has. When he’s not screaming at ringside or toeing the company line he can come across very well. He’s actually someone I’d like to have a beer with as the boxing journalists that I know that know him and the people I know that have met him talk about someone very different to the persona he puts on for the public.

I genuinely wish him well for the future and hope he stays involved in the sport maybe as an AM trainer or mentoring the next generation.

Genuine question - his power, overrated? His KO % is something like 59% with the vast majority being TKOs I never saw him as a knockout artist and the % will be flawed with Haye for examples ankle going being in that total.

For me, even though I only listened on the radio, I thought Bellew's draw against the Welshman was a highly creditable result. I never expected it. I think Cleverly was pre-Kovalev at that time, and to me he looked almost like an immovable object. Very tough man to beat on his night.

bellews resume of wins is pretty solid, ya there are holes to pick and its not like he was some absolute elite world class fighter, but overall he had a good career

people go on about how he always won vacant titles, but at pretty much all those levels he beat guys who were clearly on that level, example beating masternak for the ebu, beating ovill in a british title fight, beating ajisafe in a commonwealth fight, etc

makabu was in most world top 10 lists when bellew beat him for the wbc, he wasnt awful and he was the slight favourite i think. the haye wins were nice even though haye obviously wasnt what he was. chilemba was probably lower top 10 at lhw and is an underrated win imo, even though it came in a rematch.

Plus beat Haye twice against all the odds, yes Haye wasn't the same fighter he used to be but still decent wins. A better resume than a lot of fighters.

He lost a close fight with cleverly then beat him in a rematch at cruiser weight ( Cleverly should of never gone to CW). He moved to CW cos Stevenson battered him and he weren't gonna do anything at the weight. Yeah he struggled to make weight but most fighters do. the first time he boxed Haye he was losing until the injury. Haye was a shell of his former self and was yet still fancied by many in the rematch down to the fact that Bellew just wasn't world class. He talked himself into big fights and fair play he's earnt a lot of money but he will not be remembered as anything other than a average fighter with a big Character

Money wise, outside of Lennox, Haye, AJ, Naz, JC, Khan and Hatton he has prob outearned the rest.
Dared to dream and made the most of his talent.
