Charlie Edwards vs. Cristofer Rosales (c) - 22 December 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Charlie Edwards will challenge Cristofer Rosales for the WBC world flyweight championship on the undercard of Dillian Whyte vs. Derek Chisora 2 at The O2 in London on December 22, live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Edwards has already challenged for a world title when he met John Riel Casimero for the IBF flyweight crown, gamely taking the talented Filipino ten rounds in London in September 2016. The 25-year-old has racked up five straight wins since his first professional defeat and is ready to seize his second shot at World title glory.

Powerful Nicaraguan Roasales stopped Daigo Higa to claim the vacant WBC World title in Japan before knocking out hometown hero Paddy Barnes in four rounds at Windsor Park in August, and now the 24-year-old plans on silencing The O2 by delivering another devastating performance on December 22.

“I’m delighted to get a shot at the WBC world flyweight title and I won’t be wasting this opportunity,” said Edwards. “I’ve come on a lot since the Casimero defeat and I’ll show that on December 22 by taking the WBC flyweight world title home with me.

“I’ve mixed it with a two-weight, legit world champion and it’s done me the world of good. I’ve come on in leaps and bounds since then and I can’t wait to step up to that level again.

“Rosales is a tough man but he’s beatable and we’re already working on a game-plan. I’m heading into this fight with the experience of already challenging for a world title and that will benefit me greatly.

“My first shot at a world title was a huge gamble but this time I’m ready and I’ll be bringing that belt home with me. I’m in this sport to take on the best and December 22 will be my first World title win of many.”

“This is a great fight and huge opportunity for Charlie to win the WBC title,”
said Eddie Hearn. “We saw Rosales’ devastating KO over Paddy Barnes this summer and he has become an impressive champion. Charlie will have the London crowd behind him as he looks to make history on a huge night of boxing.”

tbh, after the casimero fight edwards didnt really move up in levels. basically it was domestic level to world title shot, then back to domestic level and again a world title shot

maybe some fights at a more in between level would help? compare that to rosales, whose been matched excellently for development

they kind of push edwards like hes some special talent who should be expected to win these title fights despite the lack of experience, but is he really that good?

I've said it before and i'll say it again. Hearn is good at gettin his fighters world title fights. He must pay these beltholders decent money to come to the UK.

Like most of these challenges, the British fighters almost always fail to capture the world title.

FW paid Rosales to come over Belfast, only to knock Paddy Barnes out in 4 rounds..

Hearn has probably paid him similar money to come to London, and probably do the same thing.

Whatever happened to the british beef between Kal Yafai and Edwards? Maybe Hearn really thinkg Edwards can beat Rosales, then he can do a unification bout? unlikely.

You're right about Edwards. Would they not rather build him up, Give him a few solid wins. Is he even Euro level?

It’s just so Hearn can say there will be a world title fight on the card. Like he always promises us.

I get the impression this fight and the Cassimeiro fight were initiated by Edwards and his management telling Eddie to get the fight made.

Anyone with half a brain can see he needs more build up fights.

I think they are banking on Rosales regressing back to the fighter he was vs Yafai. He’s improved a hell of a lot since then.

Neither of the Hearns have ever been particularly good at building and developing boxers. Edwards is talented but could really do with a few in between domestic and world class fights. They are asking a lot of him to jump back into world class.

Shows how good Andrew Selby is. He beat Rosales with something to spare.

Edwards has had 2 notable wins since getting thrown in far too deep in the world title fight with Casimero, a dominant points win over Butcher to win the British and the early blow out of Nelson, both solid domestic wins but again is it any kind of platform into another world title fight? I highly doubt it, don't get me wrong I think there's a decent chance Edwards might win a close one, I give him more chance than I gave Barnes who I don't really rate as a world class pro

Still ive gotta go with Rosales to pull out a late win, he's got the experience, been in with Higa, Yafai, Selby and is in good form, TBH he's getting a fairly easy run as world champ and probably getting decent dough to come over and defend his title so fair play, you could argue Warren and Hearn deserve losing out for bringing over a world champ for filler for their cards against undeserving guys

Edwards showed a lot of bravery in the loss to Casimero so I expect him to compete, he is a decent technician when on form and Yafai and Selby used skills to beat Rosales so I do give Edwards a chance of hanging on for a win but my gut instincts tell me Rosales too strong down the stretch and will force a late stoppage

Rosales can bang and Edwards can't and with the disparity in experience, that's bad. Edwards not up to this level of competition yet. Appears to me that his handlers have mis-managed the lad. BTW I believe that Selby would beat Rosales again were he in the ring rather than Edwards.
