GlobalBox wrote: 17 Nov 2018, 06:33 So obviously Gavin can't win the title but are they doing one of those scenario's where the Spaniard can still lose it if he gets beat and then it becomes vacant, or are they just doing a 10 or 12 round catchweight.

Not seen a single announcement confirming any distance, title, or non title.

Just curious how the EBU are dealing with this.

I know in world title's they just say the above.
The match will count as Lejarraga's first defence if he wins the fight. If he looses, some say the title will be vacant, but those who think they know the rules and have stated an opinion says that even with a loss Lejarraga would keep the European title.

I am in Bilbao now, and the general impression here, as also stated in the newspapers such as Marca today, is that Gavin is in great shape but did not bother to make the weight to fight for the title. He only wants to win, and came to fight with a weight advantage. Lejarraga is said to be furious for his cheating, and looks forward to punish Gavin badly in the ring tonight.

Google translation of Marca's article today:

Kerman Lejarraga: "I will leave my life to win Gavin, the public will take me on wings"

What happened yesterday at the weigh-face combat Kerman Lejarraga with Frankie Gavin is not something you see often in the boxing world. The Englishman did not give the stipulated weight, which for the welterweight category is 66,700 kg , while he went to 68,700 kg , so the aspiring champion of Europe who holds the Basque, stops being automatically. However, this type of circumstance does not prevent a fight from taking place.According to the rules of the European Boxing Union (EBU) , the fight goes ahead in these cases, but the fighter in possession of the title retains him even if he loses the fight . The boxer who has breached, in addition, will lose part of the bag, although this will be according to what stipulates the contract signed by both parties. Now Gavin has faded the contest with no title at stake, which is a lack of respect for his rival and fans , especially for those 11,000 spectators who will come to see the fight live at BEC Bizkaia Arena. As Kerman said in MARCA, the weighing "is the first assault of each combat", and in this the 'Revolver de Morga' has won this first round and will surely come out to knock out an opponent who has not complied.

The challenge now for the Spaniard is no longer to retain his title -which is guaranteed- but to beat a rival who starts with physical advantage . Seeing Gavin hydrate after the weighing was the minimum. It suggests that at least he had tried, but the fact of giving 2 kg more indicates that he has not made the same effort as Kerman.Kerman, in the 'top 10' of contenders for world titleUnfortunately, this is not the way in which Lejarraga would have liked to face the fight, but this incident will not detract from its objective. He is an intelligent fighter and this will be another experience. The Basque knows perfectly that winning this fight will further expand his international fame and open many doors. For a boxer who is already in the 'top 10' of the line of contenders of the four leading agencies of boxing , a victory would mean continuing to climb towards an opportunity for the world belt. Without going any further, the popularity of Bilbao boxer has led to this fight is issued in the United States through ESPN + (3 pm East Coast). His 21 KOs have not gone unnoticed .
Many thanks for that it's greatly appreciated :TU:

Another translation of the article!
The Spaniard is big news in his own town, a bit like Hatton in Manchester.

Kerman Lejarraga: "I will risk my life to beat Gavin, I'll be unbeatable with this crowd behind me,"

What happened at yesterdays weigh in between Kerman Lejarraga and Frankie Gavin is not something you see often in the boxing world. The Englishman did not make the stipulated weight, which for the welterweight category is 66,700 kg , instead he came in at 68,700 kg. This means that the challenger can't win the title held by the man from the Basque Country(a region of Spain).

However, the fight will still take place but as according to the European Boxing Union (EBU) rules the fighter in possession of the title will retain it even if he loses. The boxer who didn't make the weight will lose part of his purse, according to the amount stipulated in the contract which was previously agreed and signed by both parties

Frankie Gavin will now fight without the title at stake, Showing a lack of respect for his opponent and the fans , especially for those 11,000 spectators who will come to see the fight live at BEC Bizkaia Arena. As Kerman said in MARCA, the weigh in "is the first part of each fight", and in this the 'Revolver de Morga' has won this first round and will surely look to punish his foe for his insolence.

The challenge now for the Spaniard is not to retain his title, but to beat someone starting with a significant physical advantage . Seeing Gavin rehydrate after the weigh in suggests that at least he had made an effort to make the weight but 5lbs suggests he didn't work too hard, certainly not as much as Kerman,

While this of course isn't the build up that the Spaniard wanted it will not put him off course. In fact it will be a part of the learning curve for this intelligent fighter. Winning this contest will begin to open doors for him and put him in the international spotlight.

.For a boxer who is already in the 'top 10' in each of the top 4 bodies rankings, a victory would mean continuing the climb towards an opportunity to fight for a world championship. Already the popularity of the Bilbao boxer has led to this fight being broadcast in the United States on ESPN + (3 pm East Coast). His 21 KOs have not gone unnoticed .

Typically in Spanish fights before the main event there is an interval and people drink and eat.
The bill will normally finish about 2am.
I think this will star about 12.30 spanish time if there are no delays.
I remember when Skeete fought over there it went quite late.
