Did Bellew beat a single champion at any level?

Post by tobyh5 »

I like Tony so hate to shite on him, but I wanted to point out that all his titles, even fringe intercontinental baubles, were vacant wins. Which means he did not once challenge a champion at any level and win, and the three times he did fight a reigning champion, he lost.

Won vacant Commonwealth title versus Atoli Moore
Won vacant British title versus Ovill McKenzie
Lost WBO tilt against Nathan Cleverly
Won vacant WBC International Silver Light Heavyweight Title against Edison Miranda
Won vacant WBC Silver Light Heavyweight Title against Roberto Feliciano Bolonti
Lost WBC tilt against Adonis Stevenson
Won vacant WBO International Cruiserweight Title against Valery Brudov
Won vacant EBU European Cruiserweight Title against Mateusz Masternak
Won vacant WBC title against Ilunga Makabu
Lost title to Usyk for Undisputed World Title

Not once in his whole career did he defeat a champion. If I have missed one, this thread is hugely weakened

Clev himself was the same until Braehmer (and wasn't he only WBA regular champ).

I don’t really see that as his problem. He doesn’t half get a few threads on here does Tony. And why not, he’s a live one after all.

His best reign of terror title wise was 2010-2011 Commonwealth Champion and Picked up the British too. He was Alright at that level

From the money he has earned, and his achievements on paper, it really has been a Cinderella career. Belts, commentary gigs, move role, money...
Amazing run.

Yeh. There was a mention of this on Twitter. TalkSport put it up al the belts he won and there was a few comments that all the belts were vacant.

wow thats quite the run of vacant title fights!

tbf though, at pretty much all those levels he beat guys clearly on that level, even if they werent champs at the time

ebu: beat masternak for the ebu and master defo is euro level and has won the ebu before
brit: beat ovill in brit title fight and ovill has been british champ and imo defo of that level or better
commonwealth: beat ajisafe for the commonwealth and bob was easily that good, probably more like brit level tbh intercontintenal: not really sure what the general level of these are tbh, you can get such a wide range with them

makabu isnt really a top tier cw, so i wont say he beat a world class cruiser for the wbc, but makabu was in most world top 10s when bellew beat him and was a slight favourite i think. most cruisers dont have many wins better then that.

If you had read it that way, he did beat several former champions so why single out David Haye?

I do think it’s harder to win a title from a champion. Even if he fought Brit or Euro level guys for the vacant belts, his opponents had just as much to lose as he did. Nothing.

If you see things like Chris Eubank Jr, Chilemba counts as a former champion too.

Haye and Cleverly is correct. Although neither ever held one of the main 4 belts at the weight Bellew beat them at. Cleverly never held a cruiserweight belt (he beat Bellew at light heavy, where he was a champion), and Haye's heavyweight belt was only the WBA regular version.

Haye’s belt wasn’t ‘only the regular version’, it was the only WBA belt at the time. Regular/Super were created after he lost to Klitschko.

I stand corrected. The Haye/Klitschko fight happened earlier than I remembered. :TU:
