Gate Receipts For A Number Of Charley Burley's Bouts

Post by Chuck1052 »

Charley Burley was not much of a gate attraction for a boxer with his talent and stature. This hampered his ability to get a shot at a world title or lucrative bouts. I have looked at ringside reports in order to compile gate receipt figures of Burley's bouts. Here are gate receipt figures that were found in reports in the Minneapolis Star for Burley's bouts that took place at the Armory in Minneapolis:

Dec. 13, 1941- Ted Morrison...…………………..TKO-2 Gate- About $1,100.
Jan. 9, 1942- Shorty Hogue...………………...KO-10 Gate- $1,400.
(The Burley-Hogue bout had an attendance of 2,000.)
Jan. 23, 1942- Jackie Burke...…………………TKO-5 Gate- Less than $1,000.
(This bout drew a "small crowd."
Feb. 26. 1942- Holman Williams..................W-10 Net Gate- Around $1,500.
Mar. 13, 1942- Jay Turner...……………………….TKO-7 Gate- About $1,600.
Apr. 9, 1942- Cleo McNeal...……………………..KO-5 Gate- Less than $1,000/
Apr. 30, 1942- Sammy Wilson...………………...KO-2 Gross Gate- $3,416.29
(Sugar Ray Robinson and Reuben Shank also fought in separate bouts on this show. Robinson stole the show as far as the fans were concerned.)

Here are some gate receipt figures for Charley Burley's bouts at the Auditorium in Oakland, California :

Feb. 3, 1943- Harvey Massey...……………………………………………TKO-9 Gate- $2,400.
(The originally scheduled main event between Turkey Thompson and Bob Smith was cancelle when Smith claimed that he had injured ribs. Burley gave Massey a real beating before Referee Oakland Jimmy Duffy stopped it.)
Mar. 3, 1943- Aaron Wade....................................................................W-10 Gate- $3,195.
(This bout was considered a "stinker" that featured "too much clinching" and "not enough fighting." Both fighters seemed to have "a complete lack of spirit." The writer of the report and a number of the fans felt that Wade should have been given the decision.)
Apr. 24, 1946- Oakland Billy Smith...............................................W-10 Gate- $14,060.
(Burley won a "clear-cut despite being outweighed by 11 1/2 pounds. Smith's California light-heavyweight title was not at stake because the bout was not scheduled for 12 or 15 rounds. Burley was the California middleweight champion at the time. It was a "bitter and rough" bout that was quite exciting at times. However, it also featured too much clinching and some drab moments. According to a ringside report in the Oakland Tribune, there wasn't a capacity crowd, but an increase in ticket prices could have been a reason for it. The gate for this bout may have been the largest one for a stand-alone main event featuring Burley.)

These are some gates of bouts during the twilight of Charley Burley's career:

Feb. 8, 1950- Chuck Higgins, Pittsburgh (Aragon Ballroom)..............................................................KO-1 Gross Gate- $2,210. 79
(According to the ringside report of this bout, the net gate was $1,620. 48. . There was a "packed house" with the attendance being 1, 104. "After fiddling around for about a minute," Burley staggered Higgins with a left to the head before knocking him out at 1:17 of the first round. The crowd seemed to get a bigger kick out of the announcement that the Duquesne beat Cincinnati in a college basketball game than they did out of the Burley-Higgins bout.)

March 2, 1950- Buddy Hodnett, Pittsburgh (Aragon Ballroom)…………...............................……….KO-6 Gate- $1,075. 43
(There was a "slim crowd" of 737. Bout was scheduled for eight rounds and it ended at 2:31 of the sixth round. Burley fought "flat-footed" and knocked Hodnett down twice for counts of eight before knocking him out with a well-placed right to the ribs, according to a ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.)

July 26, 1949- Willie Wright, Millvale (Zivic Arena)……………………………………………………………………..…...W-8 Gate-$6,900.
(This was a disappointing semi-final bout in which Wright was a relatively easy target for Burley, who eased up after knocking Wright down in the second round for a count of eight. In the main event, Charley Affif won a split-decision in an exciting ten-round bout with Jackie Burke, according to a ringside report in the Pittsburgh Press. It appears that the Zivic Arena had been once known as Hickey Park.)

August 5, 1946- Bert Lytell, Millvale (Zivic Arena)……………………………………………………………………….….W-10 Gross Gate- $5,151.20
(The net gate was $4,431.58 while the attendance was 2,930. Burley and Lytell weighed 157 and 153 respectively. In what was considered a "ho-hum bout," Burley won an unanimous decision, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ringside report.)

July 17, 1946- Charley Banks, Millvale (Zivic Arena)……………………………………………………………………...W-10 Net Gate- $6,157.
(The attendance was 4,103 with Jake Mintz being the matchmaker. Burley won this bout easily in which Banks won only the ninth round which being knocked down for a count of two in the third round. According to a ringside report in the Pittsburgh Press, while the bout was not considered "good to watch," it wasn't considered a bod one. The bout may have looked to be relatively bad in comparison to "two classy prelims." )

March 14, 1946- Charley Dodson, Pittsburgh (Aragon Gardens)……………………………..… TKO-3 Gross Gate- $2,253.16
(According to the Pittsburgh Press ringside report, the attendance was 1,602, which was considered "one of the largest crowds" in the history of the venue. The net gate was $2,140.50. Each fighter weighed 157 pounds. Towards the end of the second round during the bout, Dodson was knocked down and saved by the bell. He failed to come out for the third round.)

August 20, 1945- Aaron Wade, Pittsburgh (Forbes Field)……………………………………..…………….W-10 Gross Gate- $16,302.55
(According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ringside report, the net gate was $12,473.05 while the attendance was 6,703. In the main bout on the card, Sammy Angott and Gene Burton fought to a ten-round draw. After the main event took place, Burley won an unanimous decision over Wade in a "dull battle." According to the report about the bout, "The less said about this one, the better." Wade had an awkward fighting style.)

July 26, 1945- Oscar Boyd, Pittsburgh (Forbes Field)…………………………………………………………..KO-2 Gross Gate- $14,493.55
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Press, the net gate was $11,460.07 while the attendance was $11,460.07. In the main event, Jimmy Bivins won an unanimous decision in a ten-round bout with Curtis Sheppard. In the semi-main, Burley "hammered" Boyd around the ring in the first round with accurate blows while using both hands. A hard right cross to the head knocked Boyd out at 51 seconds in the second round. Burley and Boyd weighed 156 and 160 respectively.)

Speaks volumes as to why none of the top tier fighters wanted such a tough fight (for such questionable money.)

I was surprised at the low gate for the Holman William fight in '42, but I noticed you added the term "net" before the $1,500 figure. What does that imply, was that the receipts after the fighters were paid or just operating costs?

No info regarding the Fritzie Zivic trilogy in the late '30s? I thought maybe those fights might have drawn a crowd.

The Holman Williams fight in Buffalo, in '45 looks to have been a title elimination bout and was held 'outdoors at a ball park' (Civic Stadium), so I wonder if that turned out to be his best payday.

The biggest payday (the only reasonable payday) was the Oakland Billy Smith fight but one has to wonder if it wasn't Smith who drew the crowd (Auditorium, Oakland), but the San Francisco area and San Diego sees to have been his home away from home, but even when he returns to his actual home, Pittsburgh, his numbers plummet.

He fought Holman William five times in one year (42-43), shades of Langford-McVea; you have to wonder if they both weren't just trying to find a payday to pay the bills?

I haven't entered all of the gate figures that I have found for Charley Burley's main event bouts. In regards to Burley's bouts with Holman Williams, I think that they drew quite well in New Orleans and Hollywood, but the bout in the latter venue was declared a "no contest." Their bouts in other cities apparently didn't draw very well. I seriously doubt that their bout in Minneapolis drew a gross gate of as much as $2,000. if the net gate was $1,500.

Burley simply didn't catch on in Minneapolis, which may have been a reason why he didn't fight there again after 1942 even though he was managed by the Minneapolis promoter, Tommy O'Loughlin, for several years. I believe that Burley did better in California than in Minneapolis overall in that regard. But Burley certainly didn't do consistently well as a gate attraction in California. Burley probably fought in front of some good-sized crowds for some bouts in Hollywood and San Francisco in addition to the good-sized crowd that saw his bout with Oakland Billy Smith in Oakland. He probably didn't draw crowds in San Diego overall.

The reason that I was trying to find the gates for Burley's main event bouts was to show that he simply wasn't a big enough gate attraction to get lucrative bouts or a shot at a world title. It is likely that Burley never drew a gate of more than $16,000. while fighting a "stand-alone main event." I also doubt that he ever received a purse of as much as $4,000. for a bout. It is very probable that he made less than one hundred thousand dollars in purses during his entire career. Burley was holding down jobs at times during his career, which is a good indication that he wasn't making enough in the ring to support his family at least part of the time.

Burley wasn't much of a gate attraction in his hometown of Pittsburgh, unlike Billy Conn, Fritzie Zivic and Sammy Angott. That is one reason why Burley fought a lot elsewhere.

Here are some gate receipt figures for Charley Burley's bouts in the Pittsburgh area:

Aug. 25. 1941- Otto Blackwell, Millvale (Hickey Park)……………………………………………………..W-8 Gate- $2,198
(According to a ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the gate was considered "respectable." Burley and Blackwell weighed 153 and 145 respectively. In a bout that was not spectacular, Burley seemed to pace himself and doing just enough to win each round with Blackwell, a black boxer, putting up a game effort. But Burley did set a quicker pace in the seventh round while landing rights to the head and right uppercuts to the midriff. It was felt if Burley set such a pace throughout the bout, he might had scored a knockout.)

June 2, 1941- Ossie Harris., Millvale (Hickey Park)……………………………………………………….. KO-9 Gate- "Some $2,000."
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a "fair crowd" saw this bout with Jake Mintz being involved in the promotion. The bout was one-sided, but Burley got off to a slow start with Harris trying to avoid punishment. As a result, the disgruntled crowd was yelling to throw the boxers out of the ring and the referee, Buck McTiernan, warned Burley "several times to step on the gas." Harris was down once in the third round and two times in the ninth. It appeared that Harris was more exhausted rather being knocked out in a bout that ended at 2:36 of the ninth round. The bout was scheduled for ten rounds. Burley and Harris weighed 150 and 156 respectively.)

March 31, 1941- Babe Synott, Pittsburgh (Duquesne Gardens)......................... TKO-5 Gate- "A meager $3,170."
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the semi-main event between Burley and Synott was scheduled for eight rounds. Burley and Synott weighed 149 1/2 and 148 respectively. The bout was dull for the first four rounds as Synott held on. But during the uneven, rather exciting fifth round, Synott was in bad shape as Burley knocked him down for a count of nine. After Synott got up, Burley landed a number of rights to the jaw before the referee stopped the bout at 2:40 of the fifth round. It was felt that Burley was trying to make a good showing in this bout after being inactive for awhile. In the main event scheduled for ten rounds, Harry Bobo knocked down a game Paul Hartnek several times before the referee stopped the bout in the eighth round. In a thrilling eight-round bout during which the crowd cheered from start to finish, Ernie Derho won an unanimous decision over Carmen Notch. Burley, Bobo and Notch were from Pittsburgh. At the time this card took place, Tommy O'Loughlin managed both Hartnek and Derho. O'Loughlin later became the manager of Burley for several years. The ringside report in the Pittsburgh Press included the gate of the boxing show.)

October 18, 1940- Eddie Pierce, Pittsburgh (Butler Street Arena)…..............W-10 Gate- "Less than $400."
(According to the ringside report of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, there was a "sparse crowd" in attendance. Burley won this bout "easily" while getting an unanimous decision and appearing to have a chance to stopping Pierce in the ninth round. He and Pierce weighed 150 and 157 respectively.)

More gate figures of Charley Burley's bouts in the Pittsburgh arena are as follows:

September 3, 1940- Jimmy Bivins, Millvale (Hickey Park)...............................................................................L-10 Gross gate- 2,302.
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the net gate was $1,895. while the attendance was 1,595/ Bivins got off to a good start during the first seven rounds with Burley lacking aggressiveness until the eighth round. While Burley finished impressively, it wasn't enough to overcome Bivins' earlier advantage.. Bivins won an unanimous decision. It was felt if Burley "opened up" earlier , he would not lost." Bivins and Burley weighed 160 3/4 and 153 respectively.)

August 19, 1940- Kenny LaSalle, Millvale (Hickey Park)...............................................................................W-10 Gate- $2,855.
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, LaSalle showed "concrete chin and a caste iron chin" while going the distance in a "one-sided bout." Burley won an unanimous decision. He and LaSalle weighed 149 3/4 and 149 respectively. Jake Mintz was involved in this promotion.)

July 29, 1940- Georgie Abrams, Millvale (Hickey Park)...............................................................................D-10 Gate- $3,054.
(According to the ringside report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, there was a "satisfactory crowd." Havey Boyle, the writer of the report, felt that Burley won this bout "with something to spare" even though Burley lost the first two rounds due to low blows. Burley was landing the heavier and cleaner blows. Judge Johnny Fundy scored the bout for Abrams which Judge Chick Rogers had it for Burley. Referee Buck McTiernan scored the bout as a draw. Burley and Abrams weighed 156 and 161 respectively.)
