In answer to your first question: it depends.
In answer to your second question: it depends.
I trust that clarifies matters.

It does tend to be the fighters who walk around close to their fighting weight who are the best

Re: Boxers weights
Allen does walk around close to his fighting weight. One of boxing's most consistent year round fighters? In shite shape 365 days per year.handsofstone wrote: ↑23 Nov 2018, 04:18Stuarty wrote: ↑22 Nov 2018, 18:46Like Dave Allenhandsofstone wrote: ↑22 Nov 2018, 18:42 It does tend to be the fighters who walk around close to their fighting weight who are the best![]()

Re: Boxers weights
It varies. There was a bit of a do on Twitter than time when a small hall fighter on a Coldwell bill was out-weighed by his opponent and neither fighter was in a traditional weight division. Someone tried claiming that one or both had failed the weight or something along those lines so I did a little article about how very few fighters on small or non-title shows stick to a stipulated division. I've also seen plenty of discrepancies in weight on these shows as some fighters may not get matched until the day itself.
Jamie Quinn even came in with only a few hours to go on one Black Flash show to fight Zelfa Barrett. If I recall there was about 3lbs between them and that is a relatively small gap for this type of thing.

i imagine that journey men who are out constantly fighting will be closer to their natural weight then guys who only fight a few times a year
at least at top level, massive weight cuts are pretty common. and you get guys like crawford, peterson, spence, who fight at 147 but say they walk around mid 170s
i know when sullivan barrera fought joe smith, sullivan was 190 on fight day despite weighing under 175 officially . lemieux gained nearly 20 pounds vs spike, munguia went from 154 to 179
when fight day weights are published, its ususlly several pounds heavier, and then when not in camp i imagine the weight goes even higher. ppl say gggs a natural mw but even he has weighed about 170 on fight day i think
it seems to be even more extreme in mma

Re: Boxers weights
There are less weight classes in MMA so there are a lot more fighters forcing themselves into weight division much below their natural weight.
Modern combat sports seem to be as much about the fighters having the best nutritionist as it is about skill, ability and toughness.
