Fight by Fight: Jack Sharkey

Post by HomicideHenry »

A "hot and cold" fighter, prone to rather erratic behavior, Sharkey is an underated wizard of the boxing ring. Don't let his overall record of 37-13-3 fool you. He was a master-class tactician.

He went 8-2-0 in his first ten fights. In his next ten he went 6-4-0. In his next ten he went 10-0-0, and the next ten 7-2-1. His next ten was 4 losses, 1 draw, 5 wins. His remaining fights, 2-2-1, before retiring in 1936.

In his career he helps wins over Tommy Loughran, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling, Young Stribling, Mike McTigue, George Godfrey, Harry Wills, Floyd Johnson, and had draws with Mickey Walker & Tom Heeney.

Sharkey was apart of the 1967 NCR-315 computer tournament, but was "defeated" by Bob Fitzsimmons. You can hear Sharkey speak in this.

That's true, he was pretty inconsistent, but scored some impressive wins.
