Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
First of all this is not a fight, simply a comparison. Comparing their statistics, resume, and their skills in the ring.
I understand some people may think this is an unfair comparison due to them being almost 100 LBS in difference.
Who was the overall better boxer, and why?

Floyd by a mile. Substitute evander for Tyson and you have a topic.
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Neither was the best, but Mayweather was the better tactician of the two. Interestingly enough, I spent a good part of last evening watching Tyson prime highlights! Jeez!!! He was so hard to hit and so freakin' fast with unfair combinations and could put you to sleep with either hand. Shame Don King got a hold of him.
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Tyson's raw talent was bigger, his speed was remarkable. Tyson was more special despite the fact of Mayweather's obvious talents and etc.
Mayweather's skillset was more advanced. Tyson was a majorly offensive fighter, while Floyd demonstrated a real transformation proving how diverse he had been.
Mayweather obviously had a better resume.
Tyson was probably more popular overall, cause casuals had always loved to see knockouts, rather than sweet science master-classes. That partially a reason for their images. Tyson was a thug treated as a hero. Mayweather had his controversies, but generally people judged him as some bastard for wrong reasons.

Mayweather was the king of hit and don't get hit. Didn't enjoy many of his fights, but as a technician, he was hardly equaled. I believe that Tyson's defense and skills were so overly outshined by his incredible ability to put his opponents away, that we forget how good a defensive fighter he was during his prime.DrDuke wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 14:38 Tyson's raw talent was bigger, his speed was remarkable. No doubt Mike would knock him out.

I think I'd rate Holyfield just a hair greater than Mayweather and about a bazillion miles more fun but Mayweather is far greater than Tyson.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 14:44Something that can be debated.OH_RickNMorty wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 14:40A topic?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 14:24 Floyd by a mile. Floyd easily better defensively and overall ring craft. Peak Tyson better offensively by a mile.OH_RickNMorty wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 14:21 First of all this is not a fight, simply a comparison. Comparing their statistics, resume, and their skills in the ring.

The record books will say Floyd's resume is better and that's probably fair enough.
Young Tyson was a phenomenon though and Floyd would have loved to have been that famous, popular and exciting , short as it was. Tyson transcended boxing during that period in a way that Floyd never could.

Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Floyd transcended boxing as it was dying in this country. He freaking doubled Tyson's best ppv buys against a guy making his pro debut.
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Transcending boxing has nothing to do with ppv sales. It's about penetrating the consciousness of the mainstream.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 20:27 Floyd transcended boxing as it was dying in this country. He freaking doubled Tyson's best ppv buys against a guy making his pro debut.
Ppv sales can't be compared like for like 25 years apart. Technology makes ppv more accessible now.
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
And if Tyson had boxed Hulk Hogan in a similar money grab to the McGregor fight that would probably have sold in droves too
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Yeah but I'm talking pre prison Tyson when his popularity was at its peak. Anything post prison was part freak show and smoke and mirrors
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
I agree. Tyson on PPV was gold. After his prison stint, many of us bought PPV's to see the train wreck that was steaming down the tracks.
Re: Who was the best — Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Mike Tyson?
Yeah and the mainstream turned away from him due to the nature of the prison sentence and the general conduct.oogiebe wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 20:44I agree. Tyson on PPV was gold. After his prison stint, many of us bought PPV's to see the train wreck that was steaming down the tracks.
They all wanted to buy into the kid dynamite fairytale. The ear biting ex con is a harder story to sell to the masses

Floyd's fights were sporting events when boxing was nothing. Nobody can discount either one of them in this topic. Trying to is silly.ewenhay wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 20:34Transcending boxing has nothing to do with ppv sales. Using Floyd's ppv sales v McGregor as an example of Floyd transcending boxing is even sillier. Its lazy and you well know it.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 20:51Floyd's fights were sporting events when boxing was nothing. Nobody can discount either one of them in this topic. He was a carefully chosen dance partner who had a big following in his own sport who could shift ppv sales. That's not transcending sport, that's just welding two sports together.

Yeah but how many of those record numbers were MMA fans due to McGregor?Onetimeonly wrote: ↑28 Nov 2018, 20:27 Floyd transcended boxing as it was dying in this country. He freaking doubled Tyson's best ppv buys against a guy making his pro debut.
