Undertaker Moments in Boxing

Post by HomicideHenry »

Tyson Fury coming back from brutal knockdowns in the 9th and 12th winning the fight--- but robbed by the judges--- was so incredible it made me wonder how many moments like that in history has there been?

I think the closest thing that I've ever read about was Jack Dempsey fighting Gunboat Smith and after the fight saying, "Doc I'm sorry I lost the fight," and Kearns remarked, "Jack you won!", so Dempsey was literally on autopilot after Smith dropped him. He didn't know what happened.

Fury's heroic rise reminded me of Holmes getting up after taking clean Shaver's punch. Larry dropped like a body, but stood up to stop Shavers.

Jorge Castro knocking out John David Jackson as the referee was moving in to stop their first fight in Jackson's favor was a pretty dramatic moment.

Pretty sure it was Moore's first fight with Durelle one of the knockdowns he looked out until 9 then sprung up like a jack in the box

Though he ended up getting stopped immediately after I was always truly astonished that Fernando Montiel managed to get back to his feet before the count of 10 against Nonito Donaire. He was literally convulsing on the ground, and still somehow stood up.

Holyfield put savarese down with a hook in the 9th that was similar. Fury certainly wasn't robbed but that was amazing. Duran getting up against hearns was insane. Kates face planted saad.

Morrison landed a huge shot on Ruddock in their fight, I was quite surprised to see Ruddock pop back up relatively quickly.

On the issue of improbable turnarounds, how about the first Castillo-Corrales fight? Like something out of a movie..

Yeah, just came here to mention it. Ruddock collapsed like he was shot from the rifle.

Some good mentions that people made here.
A few more:
Both Dempsey and Firpo in their fight.
Jimmy Ellis getting up against Frazier in their first fight.
Holmes against Snipes.

Nigel Benn getting (seemingly) blitzed by the G-Man.

Gerald hit like hell - was hugely fancied for the job - and Benn was frequently hittable because he so wanted to take the fight to the other guy.

When the G-Man sent Benn sprawling that seemed to be curtains.......there's no coming back from that....and one more shot and the belt goes to Heathrow and back to the US.

Benn was something else that night! A real Lazarus performance.

Benn vs Logan
Not an absolute undertaker moment.....but yup, it was a major scare and Ambrose Mendy nearly soiled his silk suit

Might be worth mentioning Eubank Senior as well?

Lots of hard, hard miles on the clock - the end is nigh - and in with a feisty young Calzaghe who still had some hard-unbusted hands back then and Chris gets cracked early and bang on the button.

Down for the first time in his long career as well I think....despite Benn's very best efforts. But Eubank shakes himself off, cracks a smile and goes the distance with Joe. Chris was often a tool but when he was forced to scrap, he scrapped :salut:

Aye, I know. It was a huge turnaround though. I re-watched a few fights last week but there was no comeback per se but a couple did well to get back up after going down hard. I remember Stevens' face when GGG hit him hard for the first time, it's like the fight drained out of him when he hit the canvas but he came back hard, for a round or so anyway.

It's been a while since I've seen it but Eubank kinda looked a bit surprised but dusted himself off, grinned and actually managed to hurt him late on in the fight after being dropped again. I think he'd have done better if not for the huge weight drain for the fight.

Agreed........I was a Benn fan through-and-through which meant not liking Chris but Eubank got my respect that night.

Some folk forget that Calzaghe was not always looking for a points win......he hit with a good deal of venom/good timing for several years and he'd bust up his hands later on (probably on Bika) and then had to adapt his style.

Eubank could have pulled the plug/taken the cheque that night - he'd finally been put on his behind - but he got up and according to Joe's book this was a seriously hard fight on par with dealing with a prime Kessler and seeing off Hopkins.

The first thing that came to mind was Seldon going down against Ribalta:

Castillo-Corrales

Digression: Your post made me go back and look at the fight; the referee did a nice job in dealing with the knockdowns and stopped it just at the correct time. IMO one of the better handling of a fight.
