Fury's Heart

Post by Ricky »

The result of the 3 scorecards pales in significance to what happened in round 12.

To be honest the fight wasn't all that great through 11, but the moment The Gypsy King rose from the dead to preserve his unbeaten record and status as the lineal HW champion was a true moment of boxing history.

I started a thread a month or so ago stating I felt Fury was a shot fighter. Well, what he did in r12 showed me i was badly wrong, he has the heart of a Froch, a Marquez, an Ali. What a warrior :salut:

That was truly impressive. A resurrection in Holmes-Shavers fashion. The Gypsy King is a warrior indeed.

Agreed. I was impressed by both of them. Fury's chin, composure and heart and Wilder boxed a bit better than I expected.

It was like something out of a Sci-Fi movie , like when a terminator type character gets blasted to bits , but regroups and carries on .
It was something to behold .

Agreed.

It was miraculous how he got up and came back from that. Truly Holmes/Shavers territory.

Can you imagine Terry O'Connor or Howard Foster seeing Fury like that. They'd have shat themselves and started waving like the Queen instantly.

Thats a good point, how may refs would've immediately waved that off.

There's a huge difference between the tolerance of British vs US refs. In this instance, giving a champion every chance in r12 was the right approach. However, in the case of mismatches, US refs allow beatings to go on far too long imo.

The amount of time he got to recover from getting knocked down is ridiculous, almost on a par with the 30 seconds Benn got vs McClellan.

Insane heart from Fury, even to come back firing after the KD in the 9th was incredible but that last round was pretty spectacular, and I know a lot of people thought Wilder shot his bolt both times but I think Fury stunned him after each knockdown, love the Holmes/Shavers comparisons

Was ridiculous. Wilder should have been called straight back in when he was up.

Yes totally agree, Reiss checked he was ok 3 times. No knock on fury, but if you're not sure a fighter is for to continue, we've it off, otherwise, resume the action.

Maybe tyson woukd have been fine anyway, but very unfair to wilder.

Boys a few of ya are coming across very bitter. It's nothing to do with Fury if the ref gave him a few more seconds or not. The thread is on Tysons heart which can't be denied but it seems like some of ya will not give him no credit for that either

Not many guys would've gotten up from that knockdown. Even I have to give the Son of a bitch that.

Nothing bitter about it - nobody here is questioning his heart one bit, I give him enormous credit for both the comeback, and his performance, and getting up from a brutal knockdown that really would have finished most fighters.

However, the nature of the referee's handling of the fight post knockdown bears mentioning, as it did when Wilder got extra time between rounds fighting Ortiz.

refs in the us have started doing that 'walk over there, then back to me' thing a lot now. im guessing it got made a policy or something, seeing it in loads of fights now, not just this one

I don't think his heart/balls was ever an issue. He went in some hard places early in his career as a very young man and came through them.

It added about 20 seconds recovery time, it's a ludicrous rule. Why not just say all fighters have 30 seconds to recover?

Yes , it happened in the Joyce fight too I think .
A good indication if the legs are gone , but as others have said changes the 10 count effectively .

Yeah I get that mate it was a big factor and we don't know what bearing it would of had on the fight. I don't think it would Of made a difference but then again I'm a Fury fan  . Others though aren't and it pains them to show Fury any credit

This is why I Like Reiss. He always communicates with the fighters. He’s a very good referee who I only see officiating WBC fights. Lol

A true fighting man. The guy answered every question that's ever been asked of him tonight. I suffer from depression and its influenced every aspect of my life and where I am today so to watch Fury do what he done gives me massive inspiration. He was let down by the judges.

I think the way he got up in round 12 against the backstory of being so woefully out of shape and depressed was a real legacy defining moment.

Assessing it now he became something greater than just an athlete competing in a sporting contest but in a sense a real "people's champion", it's a fantastic angle to dedicate his performance to everyone who's ever felt down & out - but more importantly i felt it was sincere and not just an AJ / Hearn gimmicky selling point.

As for the judges, I'm actually delighted it was a draw (theres a sentence i never thought i would say). I don't think Fury did enough to take Wilders WBC belt, he was overly negative early on & on his back twice.

A draw actually enhances the top of the division, both Wilder & Fury remain unbeaten - neither lost their status as WBC champ / lineal champ. Everyone's a winner baby - Very interesting dynamic at the top.
