Funnily enough he was a prototype Wilder with very similar attributes and deficiencies albeit not one of the division's elite. Odd then I should adopt his handle when I hate Wilder ... or so they tell me.

It's been bothering me why your screen name was so familiar. Then I saw it and in my head separated the Candy from the Slim and VOILA! Candy Slim Jeff Merritt. Things happen strangely sometimes.

Seriously. Merritt was a big guy size wise for his time. Pretty good fighter...I saw him beat Henry Clark by dec in their first fight. He was done by the second fight. He had a spell that you could make an argument that he should have gotten a shot. What made you like him so much as to use him as your screen name, or was just something obscure you chose?

As a young man I was a boxing nut but I always especially liked the big guys. Hard to get excited about a man who weighs less than your sister

I was one of the very few Brits rooting for Bugner to beat Cooper. Bugner was my man but sweet jesus he was boring. No fire in his belly (maybe due to the in-ring death of opponent Ulrich Regis, maybe not) Most of my heroes were American. I wished we had someone really exciting instead of Bugner (I always felt Bruno was designed to my own specifications ) I wasn't greedy, he didn't have to the best - Earnie Shaver(s) would be perfect.

I remember someone respected in boxing, might have been Gil Clancy, was asked "Is Earnie Shavers the hardest puncher in boxing?" and replied "Earnie Shavers isn't the hardest puncher in his own gym". He was referring to Jeff who at one time broke Earnie's jaw.

I set about finding out everything I could read about him. I never once saw him fight not even on TV but he really captured the imagination of this white teenage limey as was (still two out the three )

I wanted to take his nickname as my own small personal tribute. It was either Candyslim or Triphammer.
