I agree that Fury is the redemption story of the year, but Usyk is by every measure the boxer of the year.

Re: fighter of the year 2018
I love Inoue, but it kind of burns me that he left super fly without fighting any of the other guys who had made it one of the most exciting divisions of the last couple years.
Re: fighter of the year 2018
Usyk beat three top contenders in one year in 2018. He is truly FOTY clear and simple.
Re: fighter of the year 2018
We are not talking Fight Of The Year. This is about the Fighter Of The Year.computerrank wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018, 16:34 #1 Alvarez vs Golovkin (848)

Besides, where the heck is Wilder v Fury and Loma v Linares, among others?

I never criticised Usyk, but I do feel that Tyson’s comeback has been remarkable.ironbeard wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018, 09:38You are (obviously) trolling here, EO.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018, 08:37 Prior to last weekend, Oleksandr Usyk would have been my pick for the fighter of the year, based on the fact he cleared up the cruiserweight division, whilst being the road warrior facing his opponents’ in their own backyards, coupled with unifying all the titles and winning the WBSS tournament...
However, Usyk only achieved what he was heavily expected to, but Tyson Fury had to overcome greater adversity, defy expectations and made a much greater historical contribution to the sport of boxing when he was unfairly deprived of his victory over Deontay Wilder.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Fury, as his style isn’t my cup of tea, and the Brits’ persona has been kind of unlikable for most of his career, but the “comeback” feat that Tyson achieved last weekend was nothing short of monumental.
Therefore, Tyson Fury has supplanted Oleksandr Usyk as being named as my fighter of the year 2018, despite the Ukraine achieving more from a sporting perspective.
I’m pretty sure that in years to come, far more people will recall Fury’s remarkable comeback than Usyk’s brilliant exploits at cruiserweight.![]()
If Usyk does not win fighter of the year it will be a certified, diamond plated robbery, not a snivelfest.
I can’t help thinking that Fury will not only receive, but thoroughly deserve, to gain more praise from fight fans than Usyk will, even though the Ukraine is the far more talented fighter.
Put it this way, Muhammad Ali is known as being “The Greatest”, even though (from a sporting perspective) Sugar Ray Robinson was actually “The Greatest”... and the reason being... is due to Ali’s greater historical contribution to the sport.
I feel that Usyk and Fuy’s situation is kind of synonymous with Ali’s and Robinson’s.
Re: fighter of the year 2018
He was already my fighter of the year in 2014. I forgot who won it then, maybe Roman Gonzalez? If he beats Tete and Donaire next year, he'd have a great shot to be FoTY. That's if no one else does anything, though. Usyk moving up and becoming lineal HW champion or Golovkin beating Callum Smith and Canelo would be something else too.godosin wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018, 15:29What if Inoue wins against his next two opponents in the WBSS, do you think a fighter of the year would be possible then? Never saw Dogboe fight, gonna see him tonight for the first time.

No way. I'm not sure how you saw it like that. Warren won both those fights. Close but clear for Warren in the second fight. Clear for Warren in the first.
I've not seen the Moreno fight in forever, though.
Re: fighter of the year 2018
All well and good but Usyk is FOTY. Re: fighter of the year 2018
I agree as posted before by me, it's Usyk, dispatched three top contenders this year. Two convincingly. Fury is comeback fighter of the year by light years. Less than nothing to forefront of the HW discussion.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 12:05All well and good but Usyk is FOTY. I can’t really disagree too much with what you say. Your perspective is entirely reasonable.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 12:05All well and good but Usyk is FOTY. Re: fighter of the year 2018
He'd had trouble making weight comfortable and seeing the Gonzalez fight go up in flames didn't want to take more out of his body.godosin wrote: ↑08 Dec 2018, 18:28Yeah, don't understand why he wanted go up to Bantamweight.
As for Fighter of the Year, he shouldn't be mentioned and that's coming from someone who has been a cheerleader of his since very, very early in his career.
A win for Budler on NYE would put him in the discussion with Kenshiro
Re: fighter of the year 2018
Yeah, I was thinking he was having a hard time making weight, but didn't want to assume. I think if he beats Rodriguez, Tete or Donaire, and maybe after WBSS Nery he can get a fighter of the year for 2019.Boxing Prospect wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 20:37He'd had trouble making weight comfortable and seeing the Gonzalez fight go up in flames didn't want to take more out of his body.

Re: fighter of the year 2018
Depends on what others do. Big things in store for several fighters. Mikey beating Spence Jr. would hands down win him FoTY. I don't think anyone can come close to an accomplishment like that.godosin wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 22:35Yeah, I was thinking he was having a hard time making weight, but didn't want to assume. Mikey beats Spence and he'll have my vote, but I doubt very much that it will happen.Mexi-Box wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 23:27Depends on what others do. Big things in store for several fighters. Mikey beating Spence Jr. would definitely be the accomplishment. We also have Fury- Wilder 2 as a possibility next year, and Light Heavy Weight is looking spicy.Mexi-Box wrote: ↑09 Dec 2018, 23:27Depends on what others do. Big things in store for several fighters. I just have a feeling Canelo will give Usyk a run for his money. Beats GGG which is far way better compared to anyone Usyk defeated and decisively win over Rocky Fielding. But I hope this one goes to Usyk.
You can also put Joshua into the mix together with Munguia, he really is active eventhough his wins were not quality wins.
