Canelo vs. Golovkin already set for May 2019?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says he's got big plans for WBA/WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo is only days away from his upcoming contest with Rocky Fielding this weekend, and De La Hoya tells TMZ Sports a 3rd fight with Gennady Golovkin will definitely happen.

Oscar confirmed that Golden Boy Promotions has locked up T-Mobile Arena in Vegas for Canelo to fight on May 4 -- but said he's not ready to announce the opponent.

When we asked if he was gunning for Golovkin, Oscar downplayed it.

"I haven't even spoken to GGG, I haven't even spoken to his handlers. I have that date for Canelo and that's it," Oscar said.

But, he did assure us a 3rd fight is coming -- whenever Canelo feels like it.

"Is he gonna fight GGG again? Yeah, whenever we say he's gonna fight him again. We call the shots now. Canelo beat him so if he's gonna fight him it's gonna be when we say.”

Oscar said there are other fighters in the mix for Canelo as well -- including Daniel Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders and the Charlo brothers.

"They're all gonna get it," Oscar says ... "Canelo fights the best."

First up is Fielding at Madison Square Garden in New York CIty -- and Oscar says he expects nothing short of a knockout.

Will Golovkin need to sign with DAZN to have it happen that soon?

Is Canelo more likely to fulfill his WBA mandatory against Lemieux on Cinco de Mayo weekend?

Seems like waiting until at least September is the way to go. PPV numbers were down slightly for the rematch, regardless of streaming and closed circuit being available.

Coming back for a trilogy fight just 5 months away might be overdoing it. The mystique has evaporated by now.

Canelo pockets at least 80% this time. Golovkin has to pay for getting greedy last time out.

I don't care to see it a 3rd time. We've already seen on 2 occasions that even if Golovkin wins he doesn't win. Why keep watching this?

Agree. I feel like I've been conned twice now. No way I'm being separated from my money a third time. If Golovkin knocks him out, they'll probably find a way of awarding Canelo a DQ win. I hate boxing sometimes.

I'd much prefer both fighters move on.

Wonder how much Fielding is being paid to make sure he doesnt win this fight? How the hell is Canelo only a -1200 favorite? Surely Fielding was not hand chosen because he can actually win? What stupid Brits are betting on this bullshit? Keep your money in your pockets. Christ.

The PPV price was slightly higher. It did less buys but generated more revenue.

I admit, I don’t want to see it again. I didn’t pay for them but felt sick to my stomach. That shouldn’t happen in a sport you love.

GGG could send Canelo to the bloody hospital and Canelo would still win via split decision.

GGG has made plenty money of his 2 Canelo fights. Over $50m at least.

They think a 3rd fight will generate more money, maybe.. people will pay to see GGG finally put it on him but we all know deep down, the scorecards are just gonna get wider.

Also, they wouldn’t want Canelo to lose in his 2nd fight with DAZN.

The cartel certainly call the shots, and of course they still want the money the third GGG fight will bring. They'll want the controlled corruption of Las Vegas again, naturally enough.

Team Golovkin need to think seriously about the location this time before signing up to get robbed again. Make damn sure that the Canelo cartel pays through it's nose if it insists upon Vegas.

Then GGG can happily go in there again for 12 more highly paid rounds of casual sparring. It's obviously going too far to call it a sporting event.

I would very much feel this way if I were Golovkin, too.

$20m for the first. He got a nearly 50/50 split for the rematch. Around $30m..

Golovkin doesn't want to deal with Canelo again to get cheated the 3rd time. No way in hell he will fight for 20 or even 30 percent.

I hope he does. This fight badly needs a change of venue.

As good as the two fights were, I find the prospect of a third one strangely uninspiring. is anyone else bored by the prospect or am I losing the plot?

You're not losing the plot..

Funny how Canelo is now fighting for the first time at MSG, a venue GGG has headlined a few times.. But Canelo couldn't fight GGG there..

No thank you.

Just give GGG a large payday, in exchange for another judges Robbery and Canelo a win most know he doesn't deserve.

I've seen this show twice. No need to see a third.

I also can’t be arsed. Would rather GGG fought Billy Joe or Charlo. Obviously, the money is with Canelo, but he can’t win unfortunately.

If not, face Smith at super middleweight.

Canelo vs. Golovkin Trilogy Targeted For May 4, Says De La Hoya

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has directed his company president, Eric Gomez, to begin immediate negotiations to stage a trilogy encounter between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo, who De La Hoya promotes, is scheduled to return to the ring on May 4th, Cinco De Mayo weekend, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas - the venue where they collided on two previous occasions.

Golovkin is still a network free agent, with Premier Boxing Champions, DAZN and ESPN all attempting to sign him up. Reportedly, PBC has made the strongest offer of the three. Golovkin has not made any comments regarding his future.

The suggested weight for the third contest is unknown, with Canelo holding titles in two weight classes and to date has not made an official decision regarding his weight class future.
