Woods-The forgotten man?
Woods-The forgotten man?
Well unsuprisingly all the talk is of the Hatton fight.Just thought id give Clinton a mention i thought it was a great performance,he seems to have more and more confidence in his own ability and a great uppercut
He seemed to be in control throughout most of the fight.Apparently its Johnson next!

as i said on another thread, it was woods who emerged on the night as the british guy with the top class tools. not hatton. he's becoming a formidable offensive fighter - and a classy boxer to boot. the way he dazzled hoye, had gonzalez looking weak and outclassed and bashed up delisle, i can't help but be impressed
woods looks like he has the beating of most of those guys at light heavyweight. and with his accomplished right hand punching, you have to wonder what impact he's make on calzaghe. woods looks a tougher assignment than Mikkel Kessler.
does anyone else at light heavy have that 'championship look' about them more than woods? methinks not
seems like ppl don't 'forgive' Woods his past. i.e. losing to Jones.
Brilliant performance

yeah Clinton looked good, seems to be stronger than ever.
He's at his peak now and brimming with confidence.
They should make the fight with Clazaghe now. If Warren has offered Clinton £400k he should take it, its a great purse where he should net £200-£250k, at least.
Or is Clinton waiting for the winner of Tarver - Hopkins?
What a great double bill it would be
Calzaghe - Woods
Hatton - Witter

last time with johnson woods was lethergic. he seems far more energetic these days. woods has the tools now and the energy to implement them. that uppercut is evil. and it badly hurt johnson in their first fight, which may tell us more about how the next fight will unfold than the previous two. i think it will go late, but imo woods can pull off an emphatic winKO Artist wrote:No I think Johnson would get himself up for it. Mmmm - First 2 rounds he was awesome, really was. The rest of the fight (till the KO) he was largely (IMO) second best to DiLisle... I was starting to see an upset.
He is a strong man and undoubtedly world class, but I don't think it topped the Gonzales performance. Lets not forget, despite all his talk of being a better fighter now - DiLisle hasn't backed it up with meaningful wins.

woods did go quiet, probably giving away a round, i had him winning most of it still. i've been really impressed with him ever since the hoye fight. he does go through sleepy spells, even vs gonzalez he gave a couple of rds away. i like his composure and accuracy. i think he can beat that glorified amateur tarver.
delisle isn't a top 10 guy like the previous 2 opponents, but i have to like how he's outclassed 3 very tough men in a row.
would love to see woods-calzaghe. how would jc cope with those right handers & cute boxing / could woods keep the pace? i think it would be a superb fight with many subplots. i've actually been calling for this fight since march 05
i take woods over tarver and johnson, but his biggest tests at 175 would be briggs and adamek

I hear it might be as early as the end of July (but Fight Academy can be a little over-optimistic.
I also heard that FA offered Glen an undercard fight on last night's Sheffield bill but he wanted 50k for a knock over job.
Report here anyway:

You summed it up quite nicely. I for one hope that Johnson decides to take the Adamek fight instead, only because it will free up the WBC champ from the limbo he is in right now. Clinton has a good promoter that does whats best for Clinton, he couldnt ask for more.viciousmaussa wrote:as i said on another thread, it was woods who emerged on the night as the british guy with the top class tools. not hatton. he's becoming a formidable offensive fighter - and a classy boxer to boot. the way he dazzled hoye, had gonzalez looking weak and outclassed and bashed up delisle, i can't help but be impressed

Imho though Johnson would rather fight on his own turf than go to Engalnd and fight Woods, but either fight is possible atm.
He could ask for more than one fight in 8 months and that against a guy he's already beaten... what happened to the big fights Clinton was supposed to be getting?...Axe wrote:You summed it up quite nicely. Clinton is the one who asked for an optional before the Johnson fight. Do you know how hard it is to organize a fightcard when the title challenger is 18-4? Props to Woods though, not for beating Delisle but for looking great doing it.silkov wrote:He could ask for more than one fight in 8 months and that against a guy he's already beaten... what happened to the big fights Clinton was supposed to be getting?...Axe wrote:You summed it up quite nicely. Get real for god sake he from all acounts was recieving has good has he gave , until he stopped him .
Delisle ain't superman he's a Aussie journeyman brought to lose Danny Green stopped him a lot easier than woods and that was before Delisle was damaged goods. For fack sake you want to se how good Woods is let him face Adameck or the other Aussie Briggs, put simply Delisle is a division 2 player Briggs plays Premier, so I would'nt get too carried away about Woods stopping a Aussie journeyman who he's already beat once before.
You will never know how good Woods is because he won't step up . Briggs was chasing him for two years before he relized it would never happen

no, Woods dominated the 1st 3, let him into the fight in rd 4, then got himelf together and obliterated the guy. he needed an optional as he's been out of action a while while his promoters faff around and get ricky hatton into uncompromising situations.coneye wrote:Get real for god sake he from all acounts was recieving has good has he gave , until he stopped him .

delisle isn't a top 10, but let's not forget hoye and gonzalez were dangerous
right now, like i say he seems he could have the beating of tarver and johnson. adamek and briggs will be tougher, far tougher, but they're king fighters so a) few ppl have heard of them and b) they're festering on the shelf, gathering dust and rust! i don't think they're as well rounded as woods. i think Woods would be too strong for the classy erdei also.
Briggs wanted to fight Tarver, now he wants a rematch with Adamek. he's always wanted the WBC title, which he says is the best title. i've heard nothing of briggs really wanting a woods fight
imo woods is snubbed due to his past, when he wasn't world class and lost to jones and johnson and was more of a european level operator. pisses me off that a lot of ppl can't see his genuine world class skills, now that he's improved.
johnson at age 37 is definitely on his "2nd wind" since the last woods fight & has his 2 biggest career wins over jones & tarver...with the competitive decision vs tarver as his one loss since then!! its VERY EASY to look good against an EXTREMELY UNWORTHY CHALLENGER in delisle & only clinton's win over gonzalez is a legit feather in his cap since the loss to glencoffe...rico hoye was undefeated but totally untested & unproven!! a recently rejuvenated johnson beat woods more clearly than the last time!!viciousmaussa wrote:last time with johnson woods was lethergic. he seems far more energetic these days. woods has the tools now and the energy to implement them. that uppercut is evil. and it badly hurt johnson in their first fight, which may tell us more about how the next fight will unfold than the previous two. i think it will go late, but imo woods can pull off an emphatic winKO Artist wrote:No I think Johnson would get himself up for it. Hoye Ko'd Richard Hall, who went 12 rds with Johnson recently. Hoye was big and dangerous, so to say woods only has one legit feather is nonsense when he's dominated two men who were top 10 rated...yes, delisle isn't a worthy challenger. but woods' improved performance vs delisle this time speaks well of his improvement. his 3rd fight with Johnson will also tell us a lot!shoutout2u wrote:johnson at age 37 is definitely on his "2nd wind" since the last woods fight & has his 2 biggest career wins over jones & tarver...with the competitive decision vs tarver as his one loss since then!! its VERY EASY to look good against an EXTREMELY UNWORTHY CHALLENGER in delisle & only clinton's win over gonzalez is a legit feather in his cap since the loss to glencoffe...rico hoye was undefeated but totally untested & unproven!! a recently rejuvenated johnson beat woods more clearly than the last time!!viciousmaussa wrote:last time with johnson woods was lethergic. he seems far more energetic these days. woods has the tools now and the energy to implement them. that uppercut is evil. and it badly hurt johnson in their first fight, which may tell us more about how the next fight will unfold than the previous two. i think it will go late, but imo woods can pull off an emphatic winKO Artist wrote: No I think Johnson would get himself up for it. why do you think a lot of ppl fancy woods this time? it's a bit prosaic to assume that because Fighter A Johnson is better than Fighters B and C Gonzalez / Hoye, that Woods is still the same fighter. he's made a lot of changes in his approach, which are paying off.
"a recently rejuvenated johnson beat woods more clearly than the last time!!" well, they had two fights in a row, and woods had little gas for either of those fights. woods also looked bad in the 1st delisle fight, which was his fight afer Johnson, he's really come along since. then. check out the fights if you don't believe me.
woods-johnson I was a draw and it was Not a robbery. Neither, for that matter, were Mr Humble Holier Than Thou's fights with Ottke, Brewer II, Mitchell, Sheika, Sosa, Harmon

I respect Glen Johnson – he’s done it the hard way and for me, deserved the decisions in both their previous fights - but he’s not getting any younger and I think Woods is a good bet to gain a clear decision win should they fight for a 3rd time.
I think we would all love to see Calzaghe v Woods though.
Is it too much to hope that the promoters can see business sense and put on the domestic clash that all the fans want? Probably. :(

thanks for the link. woods' doctor must be better than mine, if he went to a donny gp they'd probably say it was down to "stress"Terence wrote:Maussa, if you didn't know the explanation for this lethargy (versus Woods) is at the end of this report:viciousmaussa wrote:last time with johnson woods was lethergic. he seems far more energetic these days. woods has the tools now and the energy to implement them. that uppercut is evil. and it badly hurt johnson in their first fight, which may tell us more about how the next fight will unfold than the previous two. i think it will go late, but imo woods can pull off an emphatic winKO Artist wrote: No I think Johnson would get himself up for it. woods looked fucked, physically, in both of those johnson fights, quite early on. witherspoon was pleading with him to throw punches in that 1st fight.

I think one of the main reasons is the fact that he ran into a certain Roy Jones Jnr, and decided to take the fight to him. Roy was absolutely superb that night, one of his best nights at 175. Or at least, one of his last great nights.pundit wrote:I also wonder why Woods seems to get so little recognition. He's develop into a very solid champ and would be a serious challenge for everyone at l-h or below.
Woods has improved massively since then. Enough to make him favourite against Tarver or Johnson? No. But it should be remembered that he actually fought a Jones who was still near his peak. Which is more than those two have done. No knock on either Tarver on Johnson, but that's where they made their name. Woods is a very credible fighter now.
