Why so damn late for a gimme fight for Davis? Mares was tiny for FW, and he'll be even more tiny for SFW.

whats with matching him vs these guys coming up in weight? tanks a very good fighter, he should be matched more ambitiously

i remember one poster here trying to suggest that loma moved up to avoid tank, but you really think davis was going to be matched with loma? for some resaon they want easy touches for him

After fighting once this year, Gervonta Davis expects to box three times in 2019.

According to Davis, he’ll battle Abner Mares in the first of those three fights. The WBA “super” super featherweight champ told the Los Angeles Times’ Lance Pugmire on Tuesday in Beverly Hills that he’ll square off against Mares on February 9.

Davis added that the fight will be held at an arena in Southern California, but didn’t specify a venue. Showtime is expected to televise the Davis-Mares match.

Gervonta Davis vs. Abner Mares Heads To San Diego, Feb. 9

According to the Los Angeles Times, former three division world champion Abner Mares will challenge WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The contest, as BS.com previously reported, will be carried by Showtime.

Mares has veteran trainer Robert Garcia in his corner, while Davis is trained by the equally talented Kevin Cunningham.

Coming off a competitive loss to the #1 in the division. I don't get the angst with this fight. Abner is definitely small for 130 and on the other side of his prime, but he's the best fighter Davis has fought.

On paper yes, but he’ll be at a size advantage.

He's usually smaller. The advantage is power.

Big Power advantage over Abner who is not a youngster at over 30. I imagine Davis continues his ravaging of opponents.

its not angst , its simply just not a good fight, mares is a good but hardly great boxer and he was well beaten by lsc last time out. hes a 5'4 former bantamweight and has never campaigned at 130 and will be very small for the division, hes hardly fresh either.

Mares seems to be the go to guy now that "He'll give a good effort, but he won't win" so he keeps getting shot after shot of late. Seems like there's always a guy like that in the mix that all the top guys recycle instead of fighting each other.

Like how Trout fought both Charlo’s and Hurd in his last 4 fights..

He’s a credible former champion. He took both Charlo’s the distance and gave Hurd a tough test too.

His height is obviously irrelevant here. I already said he's small for the division and past his best, still a step up for Davis. Pedraza is the only one you could say carried more weight.

Looks like it’s taking place at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and TGB Promotions in association with Ringstar Sports, go on sale Saturday, December 22 and can be purchased at AXS.com.
