How much of an edge did Wilder's cushioning beard give him? That's similar to wearing a cushion protector around your chin
No edge whatsoever. If Wilder has walked into the ring with a “cushion protector” around his chin I think Ortiz team may have had something to say about it.
So now we're back to the beginning of the thread all over again again because some guy just swished in and read post #1.
OK, as always, to make things more easily understandable just extrapolate the situation to an extreme. Imagine a man with a giant mountain man beard, say it's a foot thick. Of course it will protect the bony structure of the jaw. You wouldn't even be able to get to his jaw. Smaller beards of course afford lesser protection. The degree of protection is relative to the size of the cushioning effect of the beard, but even a little chin beard will afford some protection to a punch that hits it at the appropriate angle..
Can you please make a chart. Something like velocity of punch versus length & density of beard.

Virtually none.
Now how much of an edge did that extra time at the beginning of the 8th round give him might be a better question.
Touche'. That is the better question.
Yes it is. I just don't think beards should be allowed in boxing that's all. They never were in the whole history of boxing until very recently in the USA.
Wilder isn't a great example - but the kind of beard I've seen Lamont Peterson fight with certainly shouldn't be allowed. Nit sure why people think this issue is stupid - gloves are padded out with horse hair. You wouldn't agree to your fighter wearing gloves with a couple of ounces more padding than your opponent - so why would you let your fighter face an opponent that comes in looking like Santa Claus?

As soon as we can reserve some time on the MIT supercomputer my laboratory staff will be doing an in depth study and eventually publishing analysis for peer review re velocity and angle of blow, size and density of fist, precise nature of beard filament structure, atmospheric conditions and temperature, etc etc.

They measured frank Bruno’s punch power at 1600 joules of energy. The equivalent of having a 200lb anvil dropped on you from 5ft. The beard ain’t helping.
some of the measurements i find a bit lol and wonder if there just for show
like cain velasquez of the ufc was measured and they said a hook from him has the same force as a car striking you at a pretty good speed
um, well okay then, so basically one of those hooks from him to the head and your dead, yet funny how he hits opponents a lot yet doesnt do anywhere near that damage
anyone see jono carrolls beard he fought with vs guillaume frenois?
at that point it becomes hard to tell where exactly his chin/jaw are to hit. i think beards like this you could have a legitimate grip with. its like 5x or more wilders beard

Did that beard actually go into the ring for the fight??? I'm astonished. Wilder's beard was nothing, but this is like a queen sized mattress.
Boxing has been around for hundreds of years, thousands of years. I don't think beards were ever allowed up until the past few years. Can you find a picture of any boxing champion, marquis of q days, pre marq of q days, bare knuckle days, all the way back to the ancient Greeks, with a beard?

Also beards weren't a fashion like they are now.
Imagine Fury never shaved his off before the Wilder fight? Wilder may not have caught his chin.

Yeah this is a more relevant point than the cushioning argument. He should have to draw where his chin is in white paint on his beard!

To the contrary, beards were much more a fashion at many periods of time than they are now.

If they allowed that and the other guy's corner didn't protest it is crazy and getting completely out if control. If i was still boxing I'd grow a mountain man beard and let my curly hair get 3 feet long. You wouldn't even be able to find me in there!

The lunatic ravings of a card-carrying Wilder-hater. Here's HOFer Roberto Duran with a beard as substantial as Wilder's getting DEMOLISHED by Tommy Hearns:

Nah man. You just aim under his mouth.
That was priceless! That comes when you constantly talk out off your ass. fornicating hilarious! Where is the chin????
People claiming a beard gives ANY RELEVANT cushioning obviously never boxed a minute in their lives. No other explanation for shite like that.

Well you're wrong about that too.
Nature gives men beards for two reasons, to protect against cold and to protect against impacts. This current nonsense with beards starts small, like the little goatee, and then it evolves into big mountain man beards getting allowed, the impact resistance being relative to the size.
They all ignore the historical issue too.
