I have looked at fights that have involved fighters in the top 100 of both IBO and Boxrec (since 26-04-06). Firstly, I dont agree that the better rating is the one that produces less upsets, ie the higher ranked fighter beats a lower ranked fighter, I feel it is immaterial, as time passes fighters will get better and some will get worse, as a fighter getting better his handlers should look for him to fight fighters higher in the ratings, therefore increasing his position and learning, but here are the results so far.Lennox wrote:In my opinion a rating should be based on what has happened not what is or might/ going too. So wins get points basically. A win over a good opponent gets x points and if its not such a good opponent lesser, perhaps even no points if the gulf is say 100 differences in the ratings. If a lower ranked fighter beats a higher one so be it. If the number 40 beats the number 20, then I suppose the formula should produce a result that would see the winner at maybe 25 and the loser at 26. i've been studying boxrec & ibo, in boxrec many fighters are in the wrong division to ibo or vice versa, I have been studying Cruiserweight. Rudy Markussen is a boxrec cruiser but IBO 168, the problem is he fought his last fight at 178. I can see how boxrec have him cruiser, but he should probably be at 175. This is the same with Jose Herrera, who beat Jorge Castro. I dont think either were cruiserweights as such.
I can only say what I see and despite the answers from the site owners or rating developers that the boxrec ratings are better because they predict fights to have less upsets, they still dont 'look right'. I dont really know how Computerrank or johnShep or GermanBee can look at Virgil Hill at 31 or Johnny Nelson at 16 and think they have got it right. Virgil Hill only needs to figt someone in the top 30 and win and it will be an upset, which is what they are trying to avoid.
I am going to look at the fights over the next month or so and look at the accuracy of fights and see if Boxrec or IBO produces better prediction. Glancing back over the last few fights IBO had Guinn to beat Audley Harrison Boxrec said Audley would win.

I can tell you now the rating system I've been working on, got the first 3 you listed right plus the Ouma fight... not sure about the others as those bouts were insignificant
JCS.. I said in my previous post I would run a study over a month. I think Virgil Hill would beat many of the 28 fighters ranked above him. Muhammad Rahman straw-weight at number 16 is absurd. I am convinced Boxrec system is no good. Easyish to pick a first 10 or even a 20, but these boxrec is exceptionally poor beyond the 20. 3 oe 4 people argued that Boxrec was proven better than IBO because of a lesser Upset ratio, I dont think that really matters in a good rating, there will always be upsets. I was expecting Boxrec to be better than IBO because it was the design of the system, it may of course just be a blip and over the next few weeks there may be more upsets for IBO.
2 more common upsets

For the last time, the live system IS NOT ENTIRELY BASED ON PREDICTION RATE. The guys here at BoxRec take the initiative to make the ratings "LOOK GOOD". This is why my system is not the one used!!!!Lennox wrote:JCS.. I said in my previous post I would run a study over a month. I think Virgil Hill would beat many of the 28 fighters ranked above him. The problem with using a system that "LOOKS GOOD" is that it may look good when its implemented, but 12 months down the road it looks like total shit because of patterns in history.
Well.. I think the system who has the better prediction rate IS the better system... The reason there is.. no system will ever pull 100% prediction... No system can ever pull 100% prediction because its never logical to be able to.. so closer the better.
No computerized system will ever make a ranking system look good, so in terms of prediction rate, therefore the closer, the better. I think the only good computerized rating system is through a prediction rate process.

We are not going to agree on that point JCS. I can only look with my eyes and see which is the better ratings, Ive not seen your system, you posted your Cruiserweights but you had Supermiddleweights in there and all sorts. The best ratings is very much a subjective thing, what looks good to you, may not too me. But Boxrec ratings (certainly at cruiserweight) being good is a bit like saying, "Audley Harrison looked good in his last two fights". You just cant have Virgil Hill at number 30 or Johnny Nelson at 15 and if thats the formula that Boxrec have chosen to 'sort' then in my opinion the formula needs changing.

Well, unfortunately "your eyes" don't have a measurement we can properly gauge systems with. The prediction rate is a measurement that we can properly gauge systems with.Lennox wrote:We are not going to agree on that point JCS. So, until someone can agree on a system to make everyone happy.. then we will never prevail.
Having Super Middleweights in Cruiserweights etc, is a problem with classifying a fighter's weight class.. not a problem with the rating system. That problem exists at BoxRec too.
No shit the formula needs changing, I've been trying submit logical and would-be successful changes for forever now.
Prediction quality is one way to gauge a set of ratings of course. IBO is based on the man that beat the man that beat the man etc. ie it is Linear. That is the supposed method the sanctioning bodies use, less of course their rules for taking fighters out who are champs of other organisations or are fighting for other titles or are not with the right promotional firms.
Guess its just subjective which is the best way to have objective ratings.

I see Kirk Johnson is still ahead of Javier Mora. How is that linear? How do you handle inactivity and rating decay, etc. in a totally linear system?Lennox wrote:Prediction quality is one way to gauge a set of ratings of course. BoxRec's system is prety much linear, however, the result of a fight factors in on the post-fight placement of the fighters. Also, I believe there are problems with how inactivity is handled, etc, which makes the system lesser.
It is also possible the IBO handles certain situations by manually editing some values... again, something Boxrec definitely does not do.. Where is IBO's formula anyway??? Can it be seen?? No. So it can't be tested... Who knows what's going on over there to make the ratings appear better.
Who cares what sanctioning bodies use anyway..

Would you like to defend Luis Collazo. His Boxrec rating is 51. I do not think anyone could possibly think this rating was a good one, even johnShep or Computerrank, you must be totally embarrased. Why not scrap the ratings as they are and do a poll of members of Boxrec to vote their top 10s and collate the info to produce a top 20. These ratings are ruining your site.
I think theres a system in development that trumps this one. That is too low for Collazo, but I'm not totally certain he's proven he's Top 20 at 147.Lennox wrote:Would you like to defend Luis Collazo. His Boxrec rating is 51. agree that the better rating is the one that produces less upsets, ie the higher ranked fighter beats a lower ranked fighter,
I feel it is immaterial, as time passes fighters will get better and some will get worse, as a fighter getting better his
handlers should look for him to fight fighters higher in the ratings, therefore increasing his position and learning, but
here are the results so far.

***** see your mail string --> with some remarks on ratings and ranks in improved Boxrec Ratings --->
I have looked at fights that have involved fighters in the top 100 of both IBO and Boxrec (since 26-04-06). Firstly, I dont
agree that the better rating is the one that produces less upsets, ie the higher ranked fighter beats a lower ranked fighter,
I feel it is immaterial, as time passes fighters will get better and some will get worse, as a fighter getting better his
handlers should look for him to fight fighters higher in the ratings, therefore increasing his position and learning, but
here are the results so far.

Yes, Jcs I said i'd look at both sets of ratings for a month, to see if IBO prediction rate is vastly inferior to Boxrec. Some have said that is the criteria for 'good ratings'. It would appear so far that Boxrec does not have superior prediction rate to IBO. In general upsets are common in both and the marginal ones that are unique to IBO or Boxrec are immaterial. Perhaps it will change over this next week.jcs83md wrote:still missing the point on this "study". Lennox you said prediction rate doesn't matter yet you're tracking upsets..
I have and still maintain a good set of ratings have to look good, no one will take a set ratings seriously with Luis Collazo at number 51, or Virgil Hill at number 29, for that reason I maintain Boxrec ratings are the let down of this very fine site. I do not think anyone in their right mind would say Boxrec ratings are superior to IBO. Just because IBO does not publish its formula does not make it crap, Coca Cola do not publish their recipe after all.
I am more convinced 'Prediction method' is absolutely not how to produce a set of boxing ratings, they should mirror what has happpened rather than what might happen which is IBO philosophy. Luis Collazo at 51 and some novice who is 7-0 at number 50, you are joking.
