Although he was no more than a middleweight at the time, Mike made a nice career at Light Heavyweight.

Took a shine to Jon Thaxton. He was in some top fights and win or lose always came across as a decent chap
Re: Who did you like
Andreas Kotelnik was an excellent, hard luck fighter. Nails and skilled.
Re: Who did you like
Jorge Arce, what a warrior. Nothing terrific just a fighters heart.
Re: Who did you like
Andy Lee was always good value.
Re: Who did you like
Yuri Ramanau was a decent fighter to watch as well.CaptainSpacerod wrote: ↑18 Dec 2018, 21:25 Took a shine to Jon Thaxton. He was in some top fights and win or lose always came across as a decent chap

Watched Mark win the Commonwealth super-featherweight title at York Hall in 1989 with a close but deserved 12-round decision over John Sichula. Mark wanted it more than the more naturally talented Zambian and it made him Matchroom's first ever champion. He defended the belt spectacularly a couple of times but his chin let him down when Matchroom tried stepping him up, which is a shame because nobody tried harder.

Re: Who did you like
Mike made it to the top of the greasy pole with a brilliant dismissal of Argentina's Victor Galindez on the Ali-Spinks II bill at the New Orleans Superdome in 1978. I watched it 'live' at the Birmingham Odeon in the days of cinema screenings of the big fights. I thought Rossman, who won the WBA light-heavyweight title, would reign a long time but after one defence he lost a bad-tempered rematch with Galindez, who attacked Rossman's brother at one point. There was also some aggro in the crowd and for one prolonged spell, the fans are watching a fight outside the ring, much like we saw in the Tyson Fury comeback quite recently. Galindez should never have been allowed to fight Rossman again after he stormed out of a first scheduled rematch between them in Las Vegas in a row over officials. The WBA wanted their men to judge the fight but the Las Vegas Commission said their own officials were up to the job and refused to budge. Rossman even entered the ring first in an attempt to force Galindez into the ring but Galindez stormed out of the arena, both hands bandaged. After that, Galindez should have been dropped from the ratings but he really was a favourite with the WBA and got his rematch in which he proved too good for Rossman. It has to be said that Galindez was in no kind of shape for their first meeting in New Orleans but that wasn't Rossman's fault. Sadly, Mike never got another title shot and drifted out of the sport, bitter and twisted.oogiebe wrote: ↑18 Dec 2018, 20:05OMG I love youtube!!!! go to 25:15oogiebe wrote: ↑18 Dec 2018, 19:51 I remember back in 1975, the return of Friday Night Fights. Remember Reefer fighting a south american lad and being out of his depth, knew it was over when he fell face first.bennie wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 08:16Watched Mark win the Commonwealth super-featherweight title at York Hall in 1989 with a close but deserved 12-round decision over John Sichula. When Mark 'went', he went badly. In that fight with the Argentine at the Albert Hall, you can see Ray Clarke of the Board desperately shouting at the referee to stop it but the referee, a plonker from Belgium, lets it go until Mark cops a big overhand right and goes down on his face. He never recovered from that defeat.littlepug wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 08:56Remember Reefer fighting a south american lad and being out of his depth, knew it was over when he fell face first.bennie wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 08:16Watched Mark win the Commonwealth super-featherweight title at York Hall in 1989 with a close but deserved 12-round decision over John Sichula. Re: Who did you like
Possibly, but the Argentine was tough and clever and seemed to have limitless stamina and the contest had ceased to become one by the time of the finish in the 12th and last round. Reefer always struggled against the clever types and had previously been outclassed and stopped by Daniel Londas in a crack at the European title so why they went for Gutierrez is a mystery. I would be very surprised if Boxing News tipped Reefer.littlepug wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 10:01Im stretching my memory here but wasnt Reefer favourite in that fight ?bennie wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 09:00When Mark 'went', he went badly. Re: Who did you like
I just checked the BN preview. Jim McDonnell was due to face Gutierrez (and that was the preview) in his first fight since his brave challenge to Azumah Nelson. Reefer was due to defend his Commonwealth title on the bill against a Ghanaian. McDonnell obviously pulled out and Reefer took his place. Stupid move.

Wharton! He was great. I could never work out if he was from York or Leeds (an anorak like me needs to know these things). Ryan was a one-off too, I started following him towards the end of his career. Great result against Hale, who was a dangerous dude.

Donato Paduano was a real good looking prospect from Canada when he faced Ken Buchanan in 1970 at welterweight. Seems he was never the same and/or got exposed, but I remember that I liked watching him when I could.
