Lennox Lewis vs. Riddick Bowe

Post by Btownjay »

My brother and I were taking a trip down memory lane and looking over Bowe's career (Olympics through today). Then the question came up... why didn't these two fight as pros? We couldn't remember anything that was written about it. I know they fought in the '88 Olympic finals, but nothing since then. Did Bowe simply avoid having to get back into the ring with Lewis?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Firstly, I don't think their Olympics match tells us too much about how a pro fight would've gone. I've seen the match several times and the stoppage was incredibly premature and not warranted. Bowe was stunned by a Lennox right hand but was not hurt and told the ref he was fine to continue. Not to mention that Bowe had soundly outboxed Lewis the first round. So the claim that Bowe was 'scared' of Lewis doesn't fly with me. He dumped the belt in the trash b/c of political/sanctioning issues. The prelim papers for a Bowe-Lewis fight had in fact been signed in 1994 but the fight was swept under the rug when Lews lost his WBC title to Oliver McCall.

Circa 1992, I see Bowe outworking Lewis and winning a decision.

1997 Lewis vs 1992 Bowe-I say it's a pick'em fight. Slight edge to Lewis

Don't get me wrong... i wasn't implying that Bowe WAS scared, I was asking if that could be the case. Honestly i didn't follow boxing all that much in the early to mid 90's (I was under 16, and 27 now). Of course their Olympic bout would mean nothing 6 or so years later. I was just curious as to why the fight never happened. It seems like it would have been a huge event and big payday for both fighters.

Thanks for your input! I am not taking any fighters side here, just missing facts and knowledge that i'd like to have. 8)

In my opinion he was either ducking Lennox, (since he was the #1 contender before he threw the belt away) or trying to get another Holyfield fight.

Absolutley no conest. The Big Daddy has proven in his career he is a warrior and has a will of a lion, Bowe has a better jab than Lewis, far far better uppercut and also hits harder shot for shot.

Bowe also has the FAR better chin, endurance and has proven in a war he can come back to win. Bowe will crucify this chump.

Prime for Prime, I'd probably pick Bowe 60/40...

But I'd say that Lewis had the better career, and rate him much higher than I rate Bowe.

It's pretty sad that Bowe was damaged so young... It's even more sad that he's still fighting... :-?

No worries. I simply brought that up as I know many claim that Bowe flat out ducked Lennox b/c he was 'haunted' by the Olympics match. Watching the Olympics match, you can see that it's nothing to give a fighter nightmares

Lewis the fighter you have to respect as after all, all men who get into the ring deserve respect.

But Lewis the man I dislike very strongly, the way he arrogantly taunts his opponents or instead of helping his opponents up after a fight he shows off like a kid by pounding his chest on how hurt the other fighter is. At least Tyson embraces and helps his opponents up and poeple here Ive noticed have very little respect for Mike.

Lewis is the definetly not a great heavyweight nor even a great British heavyweight.

Lewis was my second favourite all time HW next to Paolino Uzcudun, i felt that Lewis coulda beat or come close to any HW in history he has a brilliant record defeated alot of the top guys at the time, and avenged both losses to rahman and Mccall plus had one of the worst decisions when he drew with evander//

Bowe easily..... his record reads like who's who of boxing. Apart from Holyfield, he also beat Jorge Luis Gonzalez, Herbie Hide, Pierre Coetzer and Andrew Golota twice.

Are you being serious? I couldn't tell since "John L" was laughing. His wins to Andrew Golatta have a lot more to do with Golatta being fornicating insane than anything Bowe did.

Golota was battering Bowe and got disqualified!

I think this would be a good fight but I'd go with Lewis by decision or maybe a KO early or in the last few rds. But most probably a points decision. Razor I've been away for a week or so and I come back and you're still talking crap!

He was being sarcastic. It’s common knowledge that besides Holyfield, Bowe had a VERY weak resume.

Lewis an all time great? He was KTFO twice by average fighters, LOST against Holyfield in the rematch, LOST against Mercer - the same Mercer where old Larry Holmes won EVERY round. Floored by Akiwande and nearly taken out by Shannon Briggs. Not to mention being outboxed by Bruno and headbutted Klitschko to win the fight on cuts despite Lewis getting his ass beat and promising but never delivering a rematch.

Lewis is a fraud and hes never been in not one good competitve fight, he turned the Tua fight into boring drivel and this fight was meant to be two of the hardest punches in the division. I still can not believe I stayed to 5 AM and paid money to see Lewis vs Tyson, what a pathetic piece of a shit of a fight.

Well Im glad I made you laugh, but that post isnt intended for a joke. On paper Lewis got those wins over Holyfield, Mercer and Klitschko but Lewis deserved to loose all 3 as both Holyfield and Mercer outworked/outjabbed him and Klitschko was stopped by a Lewis headbutt.

Yeah. Same with that fornicating Muhammad Ali. I don't know why he's called an all-time great. He was floored by Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper and Doug Jones, lost three times to Ken Norton. Beat Sonny Liston, who was obviously well into his 40s, lost twice to Joe Frazier, and almost died in the only fight he deserved to win, beat a hostage victim for his third title, and Then went 1-1 with a 6-0-1 fighter for his third "title." He was outpointed by Jimmy Young - a poor man's Chris Byrd - and Earnie Shavers - a poor man's Samuel Peter, only to win by crooked decisions. He wasn't fit to carry Razor Ruddock's jock!
Very big difference, Ali was never KTFO by 2 journeymen.
